Review of Rogue One: a Star Wars Story
DVD reviews Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Gareth Edwards US 2016). Walt Disney Studios 2017. Region 1. 2.39:1 widescreen. US$23. Sean Guynes-Vishniac After the release of Revenge of the Sith (Lucas US 2005), the third film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy in 2005, George Lucas and Lucasfilm had no plans to add further feature films to the multi-billion-dollar franchise. This was in part because fans of the original Star Wars trilogy (1977–83) hated the prequels, and because Lucas was now interested in television, starting with the animated series The Clone Wars (2008–14, 2019). When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they announced a new trilogy extending the saga of the Skywalker family, and several standalone non-saga ‘anthology’ films to fill narrative gaps in the universe; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first of these anthology films. Its position raises important questions about the contemporary state of the transmedia sf franchise, while its narrative looks at the limits and possibilities of sf blockbusters’ political work. To provide an easy entry into the franchise’s storyworld, Rogue One offers a cast of new characters that fit (and slightly modify) well-known franchise types: protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), for example, pairs the scruffiness of Han Solo with the paternal drama of Luke Skywalker; Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) takes on the Jedi mystique and mentor role of Obi-Wan Kenobi; K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) is the non-human, comedy-relief sidekick, a cynical update of C-3PO. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), however, stands out thematically, mixing the scoundrel qualities of Solo with the risky charm of Lando Calrissian, and bringing a moral ambiguity to the normally black-and-white world of Jedi and Sith; perhaps these qualities have led to Andor’s being named as the protagonist of one of the upcoming Star Wars series on the new streaming service Disney+. -

Perceptions of Religion from Star Wars and Star Trek Abstract Hollywood films and eligionr have an ongoing rocky relationship, especially in the realm of science fiction. A brief comparison study of the two giants of mainstream sci-fi, Star Wars and Star Trek reveals the differing attitudes toward religion expressed in the genre. Star Trek presents an evolving perspective, from critical secular humanism to begrudging personalized faith, while Star Wars presents an ambiguous mythological foundation for mystical experience that is in more ways universal. Knopf Keywords: Star Wars, Resistance, Women’s March A January 2017 article from the Independent led with the words, “Across the world, Carrie Fisher's rebel princess turned general become [sic] a source of hope and inspiration for women everywhere” (Loughrey 2017, para. 1). The article was loaded with images from Twitter of protest signs bearing Carrie Fisher’s visage with her iconic hair rolls superimposed with such slogans as “Woman’s Place is in the Resistance,” “We are the Resistance,” and “Rebel Scum.” Signs found in Twitter posts, news articles, and published archives revealed numerous Star Wars-inspired messages of feminist rebellion and resistance. Some featured Princess Leia as Rosie the Riveter, the emblem of the Resistance fighters tattooed on her arm or taking the place of Rosie’s employment badge on her collar. Signs recreated the Star Wars’ ITC Serif Gothic Heavy font to proclaim that “The Women Strike Back,” “The Fempire Strikes Back,” “The Estrogen Empire Strikes Back,” and “The Female Force Awakens,” others presented the Resistance insignia and/or Princess Leia’s face stating “Resistance is Built on Hope.” Some protestors dressed in a full Princess Leia costumes from A New Hope, promising to defeat the Dark Side. Some marchers paraphrased Leia’s iconic plea to Obi Wan, and declared, “We are Our Only Hope.” A sign paraphrasing Yoda argued that “Fear leads to anger. -

Fandom Edits Rogue One and the New Star Wars Gerry Canavan For the first 35 years of its existence, the Star Wars franchise was branded as the inspired vision of a single auteur-genius, George Lucas, who controlled the franchise both creatively and economically. Among its major competi- tors in science fiction and fantasy, perhaps only Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has been so closely identified with the mind of one person—and where Tolkien had his legendarium, the mythopoeic totality of the Middle- earth narrative, Lucas had his saga. In interviews, Lucas typically spoke of the Star Wars saga as a unitary megatext from which the first movie just happened to draw somewhere in the middle.1 Lucas’s self-conscious promotion of Star Wars as a modern myth—intensified by his frequent references to Joseph Campbell’s study of mythic narrative, The Hero with a Thousand Faces—presented the narrative as emerging from a coherent “master plan” Lucas developed in the 1970s and that has slowly unfurled ever since. Borrowing from Foucault the concept of the episteme—that “strategic apparatus” within a discourse that allows “a field of scientificity” to determine what is thinkable and unthinkable within that system2—we might say that Star Wars had, until recently, treated Lucas’s authorial vi- sion as the “one episteme that defines the conditions of possibility of all knowledge.”3 In this chapter, I discuss Rogue One in the context of the 2012 sale of the Star Wars franchise to Disney, which functions as a moment of epistemic break for the Star Wars franchise. -

However, the third episode in the saga, Return of the Jedi (1983), was received less favorably than its predecessors by critics. This article will examine historical record and analyze aspects of syuzhet (‘plot’) and fabula (‘story’) (BORDWELL, 1985, pp. 49-50) in the screenplay in order to establish why Return of the Jedi works less successfully as a narrative than the first two films. The results of the investigation suggest that this was due to a fundamental philosophical conflict between screenwriters George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan.
