Stureplansgruppen Stolt Samarbetspartner Till Denniz Pop Awards
Swedish Pop Mafia: How a Culturally Conservative Effort in the 1940S Backfired to Create the Greatest Engine of Pop Music in the World
Swedish Pop Mafia: How a culturally conservative effort in the 1940s backfired to create the greatest engine of pop music in the world BY WHET MOSER • March 24, 2014 • At some point over the last 15 years—sometime, say, between the 1999 release of “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys and last year’s “Roar” by Katy Perry—it became an inescapable fact that if you want to understand American pop music, you pretty much have to understand Sweden. Songwriters and producers from Stockholm have buttressed the careers of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Usher, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Pitbull, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, and any number of other artists you’ve probably listened to while dancing, shopping, making out, or waiting on hold over the past decade. (And it’s not just American pop music that has Scandinavian fingerprints all over it: When Azerbaijan won the Eurovision contest in a 2011 upset, they did it with a song written for them by two Swedes.) If Americans are aware of this phenomenon, it is probably because they’ve heard about the legendary Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin. There are any number of ways to express Martin’s ubiquity, but here’s one: From 2010 to 2011, the pop idol Katy Perry spent an unprecedented 69 consecutive weeks in the Billboard top 10, surpassing the previous record-holder, the 1990s Swedish group Ace of Base, by four months. But the milestone was far more of a testament to Martin’s staying power than Perry’s: Not only did he help produce and write all but one of Perry’s record- breaking string of hits, but he began his career as a producer for Ace of Base. -

Sweden's Most Pop-Ular Export
May 15, 2012 08:00 EDT Sweden's Most Pop-ular Export Ever since Abba won the Eurovision song contest in 1974 and went on to be one of the best selling musical groups of all time, Swedish music has been dominating the modern world. Roxette, Ace of Base, Europe, the Cardigans. The list goes on and on. Swedish music groups have been topping the charts and winning critical acclaim for decades. Swedes such as Miss Li, Tommy Sparks and Caesars (known in Sweden as Twelve Caesars) have been prominently featured in iPod commercials. This last December, Swedish House Mafia became not only the first Swedish group to ever play New York City’s Madison Square Garden, but also the first electronic dance music group. When tickets for their show at the world’s most famous arena went on sale, they sold out in a mere 9 minutes. The New York Times even ran a review of show. Led by Swedish House Mafia, Swedes are dominating the rapidly expanding dance music genre. Half of the Grammy award nominees for Best Dance Recording were Swedish and two Swedish DJs were ranked in the 2011 top ten of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ poll(Avicii at #6 and Swedish House Mafia at #10). Swedish DJs are among the most sought after performers at music festivals around the world. But most notably of all is the Swedish dominance of the Billboard Top 100 music charts: Billboard Top 100 for the week of April 28, 2012 1. Somebody That I Used To Know- Gotye featuring Kimbra 2. -

An astonishing fact: it has been only five years since Britney Spears released her debut album, ...BABY THANKS TO ALL MY FANS AROUND THE WORLD! ONE MORE TIME. Sixty months. Less than 2,000 days. That‘s it. Fifty-five million albums later (that’s about 30,000 records a day, if you want to get technical about it), it’s hard to imagine what the landscape of pop culture would Also available from Britney Spears on Jive: look like without her. What would have happened if this one Southern belle had decided to be a doctor or lawyer or schoolteacher instead of becoming the biggest pop star of her generation? When a then-sixteen year-old Spears debuted on MTV dressed in a naughtied-up schoolgirl uniform, no one could have guessed that she would make such an immediate and lasting impact. You want proof that this dame ain’t no flash in the pan? There is perhaps no greater testament to Spears’ cultural significance — no better symbolic flipping-of-the-bird to naysayers — than the sheer existence of this album. From her coy, bubblegum beginnings with “…Baby One More Time” to the sophisticated, techno groove of her recent #1 single “Toxic,” this collection of songs demonstrates exactly how Britney has grown up and grown into her larger-than- 01241-41651-2/4 01241-41704-2/4 01241-41776-2/4 82876-53748-2/4 life persona with the eyes of the world studying and analyzing her every move.
