Email: [email protected] Abstract This paper covers the dynamics of Soapstone Craft of Dhakotha. Broadly this paper can be divided into two parts, i.e., crafts study part and product design intervention part. The crafts study part includes- research methods, craft introduction, crafts location, craft history, available raw materials, craftsmen and existing skill sets, tools under use, involved craftsmanship processes, existing product ranges etc. On the basis of understandings developed during crafts study, this researcher had explored different market specific and end-user focused product design possibilities. The product design intervention part includes different product design interventions and collections developed by researcher with a holistic approach. There are two different soapstone clusters, with different skill sets, i.e., Soapstone carving cluster and Soapstone ପତ୍ଥର କୁଣ୍ଡ or Patthar Kundo cluster; are practicing in same geographical area, so studying and exploring interventions in joint mode was an interesting experience for this researcher. • Palm Leaf Manuscripts Inheritance of Odisha: a Historical Survey
International Journal of Sanskrit Research 2019; 5(4): 77-82 ISSN: 2394-7519 IJSR 2019; 5(4): 77-82 Palm leaf manuscripts inheritance of Odisha: A © 2019 IJSR www.anantaajournal.com historical survey Received: 16-05-2019 Accepted: 18-06-2019 Dr. Jharana Rani Tripathy Dr. Jharana Rani Tripathy PDF Scholar Dept.of Sanskrit Pondicherry University, Introduction Pondicherry, India Odisha was well-known as Kalinga, Kosala, Odra and Utkala during ancient days. Altogether these independent regions came under one administrative control which was known as Utkala and subsequently Orissa. The name of Utkala has been mentioned in Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranas. The existence of Utkala as a kingdom is found in Kalidas's Raghuvamsa. It is stated that king Raghu after having crossed the river Kapisa reached the Utkala country and finally went to Kalinga. The earliest epigraphic evidence to Utakaladesa is found from the Midnapur plate of Somdatta which includes Dandabhukti within its jurisdiction1. The plates record that while Sasanka was ruling the earth, his feudatory Maharaja Somadatta was governing the province of Dandabhukti adjoining the Utkala-desa. • Translation Strategies of the Non-Native Odia Translators (1807-1874)
Translation Strategies of the Non-Native Odia Translators (1807-1874) RAMESH C MALIK Translation strategy means a plan or procedure adopted by the translators to solve the translation problems. The present paper is to highlight on the translation strategies of the non-native Odia translators during the colonial period (1807-1874). First of all, those translators who were non-residents of Odisha and had learnt Odia for specific purposes are considered non-native Odia translators. The first name one of the Odia translators is William Carey (1761-1834), who translated the New Testament or Bible from English to Odia that was subsequently published by the Serampore Mission Press Calcutta in 1807. A master craftsman of Christian theology and an Odia translator of missionary literature, Amos Sutton (1798-1854), who translated John Bunyan’s (1628-1688) the Pilgrim’s Progress (1678) to Odia under the titled swargiya jātrira brutānta in 1838. Sutton served as an Odia translator under the British government. His religious, literary, and linguistic contributions to Odia language and literature are to be studied for making a concrete idea about the development of Odia prose. In the era of Odia translation discourse, his translations deserve to be studied in the theoretical frame of translation strategies. In this paper, the following translation strategies like linguistic strategies, literal translation strategy, lexical alteration strategy, deletion, exoticism and cultural transposition strategies are predominately adopted by the translators. Since the objectives of the SLTs were to promote religious evangelization and second language learning, the translation strategies tried to preserve the religious and pedagogical fidelity rather that textual fidelity in the translated texts.

  • Fashioning Readers: Canon, Criticism and Pedagogy in the Emergence of Modern Oriya Literature
1 Fashioning Readers: Canon, Criticism and Pedagogy in the Emergence of Modern Oriya Literature Pritipuspa Mishra University of Southampton Postal Address: University of Southampton Avenue Campus Highfield Southampton SO17 1BF UK Email- [email protected] This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Contemporary South Asia on 22nd March 2012, available online: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09584935.2011.646080 Abstract Through a brief history of a widely published canon debate in nineteenth century Orissa, this paper describes how anxieties about the quality of “traditional” Oriya literature served as a site for imagining a cohesive Oriya public who would become the consumers and beneficiaries of a new, modernized Oriya-language canon. A public controversy about the status of Oriya literature was initiated in the 1890s with the publication of a serialized critique of the works of Upendra Bhanja, a very popular pre-colonial Oriya poet. The critic argued that Bhanja’s writing was not true poetry, that it did not speak to the contemporary era, and that it featured embarrassingly detailed discussions of obscene material. By unpacking the terms of this criticism and Oriya responses to it, I reveal how at the heart of these discussions were concerns about community building that presupposed a new kind of readership of literature in the Oriya language. Ultimately, this paper offers a longer, regional history to the emerging concern of post-colonial scholarship with relationships between publication histories, readerships, and broader ideas of community—local, Indian and global. Key words Literary Criticism, Oriya literature, Tradition, Public Word Count: 7344 including references 2 In the winter of 1891, in the capital of the princely state of Majurbhanj set deep in the hills of the Eastern Ghats, a series of articles critiquing the work of an early modern Oriya poet were published.

In the field of literature, it evolved to finally enable the female writers to be free from the influence of male writers as well as the social norms that suggested different standards for male and female KEYWORDS – Feminism, identity and rights of women, empower women, free from the influence of male writers ,Sita, Draupadi,Balaram Das, Vaishanbism, Panchasakha, Kuntala Kumari, Rama Devi, Sarala Devi, Nandini Satapathy, Prativa Ray,Pratiova Satapathy, Sarojini Sahu.Ysohodhara Mishra ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- Date of Submission: 18-01-2020 Date of Acceptance: 06-02-2020 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I.
