    James Earl Jones “This is CNN.” “If you only knew the power of the Dark Side.” “Welcome to Verizon.” ”Simba, Remember.” One of the most memorable voices in the entertainment industry belongs to a young man born in Arkabutla, Mississippi in 1931 during the Great Depression. His parents separated before he was born, so he was raised by his maternal grandparents. At age five the family moved to a farm in rural Dublin, Michigan. Interestingly, he is of Irish, African-American and Native American decent. One day he stood up to recite in Sunday School and was so nervous the other children made fun of him. This episode coupled with the dramatic adaptation to a new environment was so traumatic he became afraid to speak aloud. He developed a severe stutter and refused to speak even at home. Jones later commented, “I was a stutterer. I couldn't talk. So my first year of school was my first mute year, and then those mute years continued until I got to high school.” Jones was functionally mute for 8 years until a high school teacher, Donald Crouch, decided to bring him out of his shell. He made James recite a report he had written before the class under the guise of proving he had actually authored it himself. Crouch pushed James to take drama lessons, participating in the debate team and won an award in public speaking over the next few years. The award’s prize was a scholarship to the University of Michigan. When James entered the University of Michigan he intended to study medicine, but he found himself attracted to drama and the theater.

    Racism in 20th Century Ridgefield African Americans in 20th-Century Ridgefield suffered at the hands of local racists and those who were simply insensitive to their prejudiced practices. The pages of the Ridgefield Press contained stories of several outstanding examples: An African American beaten up by a drunken white man outside the town hall, the burning of a cross on the front lawn of a racially mixed couple, and the problems faced by an African-American celebrity who moved to Ridgefield. Press coverage also featured a man of peace, an African-American minister who spent much of his life fighting racial injustice. The Beating of A Black Man One of the most blatant cases of racism to appear in the pages of the Press occurred Sept. ​ ​ 30, 1922, and led to cries of injustice and to some embarrassing publicity for the local state police. That evening, Robert Cooper had just finished eating at Coleman’s Lunch, a small diner behind the town hall, and was chatting with James “Gus” Venus, the counterman. Cooper was a black chauffeur for a woman who had homes in North Salem and in New York City, and was a frequent visitor to Ridgefield. “He bears an excellent reputation as a peaceful, inoffensive person,” the Press said. Thomas Kelly came into the restaurant, saw Cooper and immediately ​ ​ ordered him to leave, “saying he would not eat with niggers,” the Press reported. Cooper ​ ​ apparently ignored the demand and Kelly “then struck the colored man a severe blow in the face and followed him out to Main Street, and struck and knocked him down and kicked him.” Bystanders rescued Cooper and brought him to Charles Riedinger’s electrical shop on Bailey Avenue.

Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1000, Lot 49. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Cort Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 24). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Cort Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1912- 13, the Cort is among the oldest surviving theaters in New York. It was designed by arc hi teet Thomas Lamb to house the productions of John Cort , one of the country's major producers and theater owners. The Cort Theater represents a special aspect of the nation's theatrical history. Beyond its historical importance, it is an exceptionally handsome theater, with a facade mode l e d on the Petit Trianon in Versailles.     AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA CINEMA AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA The history of the African-American Cinema is a harsh timeline of racism, repression and struggle contrasted with film scenes of boundless joy, hope and artistic spirit. Until recently, the study of the "separate cinema" (a phrase used by historians John Kisch and Edward Mapp to describe the segregation of the mainstream, Hollywood film community) was limited, if not totally ignored, by writers and researchers. The uphill battle by black filmmakers and performers, to achieve acceptance and respect, was an ugly blot on the pages of film history.
