August 2012 Newsletter
August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th. -

The First Nine Years
The First Nine Years This is a list of the first 85 mystery novels or authors read and discussed by the Just Desserts mystery fiction discussion group, which began at the Bennett Martin Public Library downtown in 2006, and has continued since September 2008 at the South Branch Library (27th & South St.). If you’d like to join fellow mystery fans for lively discussion (and shared desserts!), we meet the final Thursday of every month (Jan-Oct) from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at South Branch. You can check the library’s BookGuide web pages to see what the next selected book for discussion will be! During the Nov/Dec “hiatus” when Just Desserts does not meet, an author is assigned for general reading, and members are encouraged to leave a comment post on the Just Desserts blog [http://www.lincolnlibraries.org/Just_Desserts/] saying which book they read by the assigned author. Starting in 2013, our May meeting has become a “Series Share” opportunity. No title/author is assigned this month. Members are encouraged to read the 1st or 2nd book in any “new” series that has recently started – all members are given a chance to describe the series they sampled, and whether or not they would recommend it to other readers. A List of the titles/series sampled is posted to the blog. 2006 “Grave Mistake” by Ngaio Marsh “Dying for Chocolate” by Diane Mott Davidson “Trouble in Paradise” by Robert B. 2007 Dema Reaching out Award Nomination Form
2013 DEMA REACHING OUT AWARD NOMINATION FORM ABOUT THE AWARD: The Reaching Out Award was first presented in 1989. The original intent was to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the sport of diving by “reaching out” in some special way to improve the sport for everyone. There are many ways to reach out and do something extraordinary for the sport. Most that have been recognized were pioneers who helped develop techniques related to their special areas of expertise. Their contributions have been made in such areas as photography, training, equipment design, publishing, travel, retailing, water safety, exploration and science. Since its inception, the Reaching Out Award has become more than just recognition of these individual achievements; it has become the industry’s HALL OF FAME. These are the leaders and heroes of our sport. They are the ones who have helped make diving what it is today. Some have greater name recognition than others, but each is, in their own way, as important to the development of diving as any other. To become a member of DEMA’s Hall Of Fame is an extraordinary achievement and is available only to those who truly deserve to be recognized for their outstanding efforts and contribution to the sport. There are many individuals whose works go unnoticed and unheralded. The form below is an opportunity for anyone in the industry to make an application either for themselves or for someone whom they believe honestly deserves to be so recognized. CRITERIA: There are only two criteria for an applicant to the DEMA Hall of Fame and recipient of the Reaching Out Award: 1. -

Books with a Sense of Humor
Newsletter | April 2018 Books with a Sense of Humor I enjoy books in a gladiatorial sort of way. Let me clarify. If I lived ten lifetimes, I’d still never get through my to-read list. Working in a library doesn’t help. I can add twenty titles a week if I’m being conservative about it. And reading time can be sparse when it competes with parenting, eating and sleeping. So, how do I sort it all out? I start five books at a time and stick with the one that grabs my attention the most. Ruthless? Maybe. Effective? Well, I’ve found a lot of great reads this way, and some of them really started as underdogs. I may return to finish the runner-up, but often I’ve got five more contenders ready to take the arena by then, so I make no promises. Watching books fight to the death for my attention has brought something to my attention, though. I like books with a sense of humor. It’s a quality that several of the winners have shared. Sometimes it’s witty, sometimes ironic, sometimes it’s just silly, but a book is already ahead of the game if it can inspire quiet inward LOLs. This is not to say that I only read books that would be filed under “Humor.” I have a weak spot for Mysteries, Biographies, Horror, Speculative Fiction and How-To Manuals for Writing Newsletter Articles. As much as I love the likes of Tina Fey or Jim Gaffigan, I seem to keep comedians low on the list. -
