  • Olympic Champion Ben Ainslie (GBR) Dominated Proceedings Again On
Palma day five - Ainslie extends lead into medal race Olympic champion Ben Ainslie (GBR) dominated proceedings again on the final day of the gold and silver fleet races at the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia in Palma with a 1, 5 score to go into Saturday's medal race with a 14 point lead over Giles Scott (GBR). Third placed Thomas Le Breton (FRA), who won race 10, can now only challenge for silver from Scott, while fourth placed Dan Slater (NZL) is the only other sailor in with a chance of the bronze medal. The final day for the gold and silver fleets started with another, albeit shorter, postponement to allow time for the sea breeze to kick in. When it arrived the fleet got away just after 12.30 in an 8-10 knot southerly, which increased during the day. Ben Ainslie (GBR) added to his string of race wins with yet another bullet in race nine, his sixth of the series, this time from Dan Slater (NZL) and Jonathan Lobert (FRA), who has been struggling so far in this regatta. The third place gave Lobert a welcome boost up the results, but he had left it too late to make the medal race. The fleet was so tight that most of it crossed the finish line in one big group. A group of about 30 boats, were within 50 metres of each other at the finish, incredibly close after an hour of tough racing. Race ten race started under Oscar flag for free pumping downwind in around 12 knots, with the waves getting slightly bigger.

  • Narrow Lead for Postma in Finns After Black Wednesday
TROISIEME JOURNEE Narrow lead for Postma in Finns after black Wednesday Major Championships 2011 Pieter Jan Postma (NED) takes a one point lead in the Finns after three testing races at the Finn Gold Cup at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships. Giles Scott (GBR), who won two races, sits one point back, while previous regatta leader Ben Ainslie (GBR) is in third and three third places on Wednesday. The story of the day was the disqualification of a large number of sailors who picked up black flags in the blue fleet at the start of race three. These included several of the regatta favourites including Ed Wright (GBR), Rafa Trujillo (ESP), Zach Railey (USA) and Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO). ITO, Peter Reggio, explained, “It was a very trying day. But the conditions were fantastic. The left was favoured and this is probably why the guys were so eager to take this side and push the start which ended up in several recalls and disqualification. In the first race, four boats were disqualified in the first group and 11 in the second over three attempts to start. Tomorrow, we are starting the finals with a race at 2pm.” It was always going to be a tough day off Fremantle and as the sea breeze filled in and built during the day. The breeze peaking at around 22 -23 knots with a substantial sea forming, and took its toll on the sailors, who spent nearly eight hours on the water and returned exhausted, though happy with a great day's sailing.

  • Finn Class Interview - Jonathan Lobert - Great Expectations
Finn Class Interview - Jonathan Lobert - great expectations Olympics Jonathan Lobert will go into the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition with the expectations of a nation on his broad shoulders. After the 2008 Finn Class bronze medal was won by fellow French sailor Guillaume Florent, this year may bring more French success with Jonathan's performance in recent years suggesting that another Finn medal is a distinct possibility. In 2008 Florent beat Jonathan in the French trials before going on to win the bronze at the Olympics in China. At the time Jonathan was a relative newcomer to the Finn fleet, having moved into the class in 2007 after outgrowing the Laser. But he made steady progress and then in 2010 was suddenly the centre of attention as he led the fleet for much of that year's Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta - the event that saw the return of Ben Ainslie to the Finn fleet. Jonathan eventually ended up second to Giles Scott. He lost his way a bit at the 2010 Finn Gold Cup in San Francisco, finishing 13th, some way behind his main competition for the Olympic berth, Thomas Le Breton, who placed fifth. However at the end of the year he won the 2010 Perth International Regatta, and then the following year, Jonathan picked up the silver medal at the 2011 Olympic Test Event in Weymouth, a big step towards his eventual selection. A sixth place at the 2011 Finn Gold Cup in Perth sealed it for Jonathan and soon after he was announced as the French choice for Weymouth.
