Michel Sartori has indicated that 160 people from 34 countries have responded to the first announcement. One major change since the first announcement: the conference site has been moved from Chateau d’Oex to Lausanne, Switzerland, on the campus of the University de Lausanne. The second announcement includes information on registration (SFr 250, late fee of SFr 50 after 28 February 1995), preliminary program, presentations, proceedings, meals, accommodations (dormitory rooms are available), travel scholar ships (see related article below), car rental, air travel, and post-conference tours. The deadline for scholarship applications, abstracts of presentations, guest program, post-conference activities, registra tion, and payment of fees is 28 February 1995. -
Trichomycetes from Lentic and Lotic Aquatic Habitats in Ontario, Canada
1449 Trichomycetes from lentic and lotic aquatic habitats in Ontario, Canada D.B. Strongman and Merlin M. White Abstract: Fungi and protists make up an ecological group, trichomycetes, that inhabit the guts of invertebrates, mostly aquatic insects. Trichomycetes are reported herein from arthropods collected in lotic habitats (fast flowing streams) and lentic environments (ponds, ditches, seeps, and lakes) from 11 sites in Algonquin Park and 6 other sites in Ontario, Can- ada. Thirty-two trichomycete species were recovered, including 7 new species: Legeriomyces algonquinensis, Legeriosi- milis leptocerci, Legeriosimilis whitneyi, and Paramoebidium umbonatum are described from mayfly nymphs (Ephemeroptera); Pennella digitata and Glotzia incilis from black fly and midge larvae (Diptera), respectively; and Arun- dinula opeongoensis from a crayfish (Crustacea). Legeriomyces rarus Lichtw. & M.C. Williams and Stachylina penetralis Lichtw. are new North American records, and seven species are documented for the first time in Canada. More common and widely distributed trichomycete species such as Harpella melusinae Le´ger & Duboscq and Smittium culicis Manier, were also recovered. Most previous studies on trichomycetes have been done primarily in lotic environments but clearly lentic systems (e.g., ponds and lakes) harbour diverse arthropod communities and further exploration of these habitats will continue to increase our knowledge of trichomycete diversity. Bill was active in the science and conservation of aquatic ecosystems both in Australia and internationally. Bill wrote Australian Freshwater Life, the first comprehensive guide to the fauna of Australian inland waters. It was initially published in 1968 and continues to be used by students, scientists and naturalists to this day. Bill generously allowed illustrations from his book to be used in earlier versions of this guide. -

High throughput DNA sequencing of bulk invertebrate samples or metabarcoding is becoming increasingly used to provide profiles of biological commu- nities for environmental monitoring. As metabarcoding becomes more widely applied, new reference DNA barcodes linked to individual specimens identified by taxonomists are needed. This can be achieved through using DNA extraction methods that are not only suitable for metabarcoding but also for building reference DNA barcode libraries. Methods. In this study, we test the suitability of a rapid non-destructive DNA extraction method for metabarcoding of freshwater invertebrate samples. Results. This method resulted in detection of taxa from many taxonomic groups, comparable to results obtained with two other tissue-based extraction methods. Most taxa could also be successfully used for subsequent individual-based DNA barcoding and taxonomic identification. The method was successfully applied to field-collected invertebrate samples stored for taxonomic studies in 70% ethanol at room temperature, a commonly used storage method for freshwater samples. Box 348, Traralgon, Vic. 3844. A preliminary assessment of the feeding habits of 127 taxa of pre-imaginal Coleoptera, Diptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera from the La Trobe and Tanjil Rivers was made from analyses of digestive tract contents and observations of captive specimens. Ultrafine (<50 pn) detritus was the dominant material in gut contents of all five orders, and fine (< 1 mm, > 50 lm) detritus (mostly leaf and wood fragments), benthic algae (especially diatoms) and remains of invertebrate prey were also important. Bacteria, fungi and planktonic algae were present in minor quantities. Many species were shown to be capable of shredding dead leaves and wood. Dietary diversity was particularly high in the families Elmidae, Chironomidae, Leptophlebiidae, Gripopterygidae and Leptoceridae. Introduction In recent years lotic ecologists have devoted much attention to the feeding habits of river invertebrates. Most studies have concerned Northern Hemisphere temperate species (see reviews by Cummins 1973; Anderson and Sedell 1979; Cummins and Klug 1979; Wallace and Merritt 1980; Allan 1983; Gregory 1983; Lamberti and Moore 1984), and comparative data for Southern Hemisphere faunas are scarce. Korboot (19631, Sephton and Hynes (1 983), Campbell (1985) and Yule (1986) have published dietary data for some Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian species of caddisflies, stoneflies and mayflies, but these represent only a small proportion of the rich and diverse invertebrate fauna of south-eastern Australian streams. In this study, a preliminary assessment was made of the feeding habits of 127 taxa of aquatic insects from the La Trobe and Tanjil Rivers in south-eastern Victoria, based on analysis of digestive tract contents and observations of live specimens. -
