    IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 5 – Issue 1 – Spring 2020 Psychobilly Psychosis and the Garage Disease in Athens Michael Tsangaris, University of Piraeus, Greece Konstantina Agrafioti, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract The complexity and the bizarre nature of Psychobilly as a music genre and as a music collectivity make it very convenient for reconsidering several views in relation to subcultures, neo-tribes and scenes. More specifically, the case of Greek Psychobilly can categorically present how subcultural trends can be disseminated across gender, social classes and national borders. This study aims to trace historically the scene of Psychobilly in Athens based on typical ethnographic research and analytic autoethnography. The research question is: Which are the necessary elements that can determine the existence of a local music scene? Supported by semi-structured interviews, the study examines how individuals related to the Psychobilly subculture comprehend what constitutes the Greek Psychobilly scene. Although it can be questionable whether there ever was a Psychobilly scene in Athens, there were always small circles in existence into which people drifted and stayed for quite a while, constituting the pure core of the Greek Psychobilly subculture. The lineup at that time was Tony Andreason: Lead guitarist and vocalist; Dal Winslow on rhythm guitar and vocals; Bob Reed, bass guitarist and vocals; and Steve Wahrer on drums and vocals. The group disbanded in 1967, reunited in the 1980’s, and continued to play together until the untimely death of Steve Wahrer. Some time after esophageal cancer claimed Steve in 1989, Tony Andreason’s younger brother, Mark, took over as drummer for the group. In 2007, The Trashmen joined the revival movement of the popular groups of the 60’s …with the original members. The Trashmen’s major hit was 1963’s “Surfin’ Bird,” which reached #1 coast to coast in the United States and in Canada. They were #1 in Caracas, Venezuela for 6 weeks and are still listed as the top rock band of all time in that country. In Sweden, “Surfin’ Bird” came out of its cage, flying up the record play list to #2 and to #5 in Australia. Mexico called it “El Surf Del Pajaro por LosTrashmen" where it flapped its way to the top of the charts. The Trashmen continued to release great follow up singles. In 1964, “Bird Dance Beat” reached #30 in The United States, becoming a mega hit in Brazil. In Canada, “Bird Dance Beat” was a top 10 hit, as well.The Trashmen went on to have 5 other charting singles and 14 albums.

Dante Alighieri, On Eloquence in the Vernacular (De vulgari eloquentia) At the beginning of the fourteenth century Dante proposed—radically, for his time—that not only classical Latin but vernacular languages as well might serve as agents for eloquent and even elevated poetic expres- sion. Even if his case was strategic, since he intended to promote his na- tive Tuscan idiolect as the most “literary” among the many forms taken by what we now call Italian, his methodology foreshadowed in a general way the enterprise of modern sociolinguistics. In his unfinished treatise on the eloquent vernacular, the medieval poet attempted to describe broadly and systematically how language is acquired, and how it strikes the ear. Suggesting that some languages and their verbal forms and ges- tures could provide models for meaningful imitation or refashioning out- side their original ethnic and cultural environments, he argued that the expressive features of a language resided in its sound, and might even be grasped without command of its grammar, a “second” and less essential form of language. His observations constituted a watershed of cultural practice: vernacular literature would soon take off, not only in Italy but in France and England, where poets like Machaut and Chaucer were ready to embrace Dante’s modernist perspective.
