Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This thesis examines the meanings of memoiy for a group of interrelated Indian Tamil families, who belong to a Western-educated middle class, or "salariat" (Alavi 1987). Encouraged by the colonial authorities, these families migrated to Burma between 1890 and 1922, but were forced to return to India when the Japanese invaded in 1942. Despite their distinctive position - separated socially from their colonial masters, the Burmese people and from the mass of labouring Indians - these families belong to a group which, except for Chakravarti's (1971) political and economic study, has been ignored. Nowadays anthropology and history are recognised as supporting one another, yet memoiy, which is recognised as an important component of history, has largely been disregarded in anthropology. Following an introductory first chapter, Chapter 2 falls into two parts, which provide a necessary background to the whole work. Part 1 describes the three families with whom the thesis is chiefly concerned. These families have been migrants for generations, so Part 2 is on anthropology and migration. In Chapter 3 I define and discuss various ways of recalling the past. In addition to history, these include oral traditions, individual memoiy and social memoiy. I show how different kinds of memoiy are important in allowing people to put forward their own interpretation of the past. Taken together they allow for a "thicker11 description than would be possible using only historical sources. Moreover, memory is selective; what is recalled gives meaning to the present and guidance for the future. In Chapters 4, 5 and 6 (Aspects of life in Burma, Relations between Burmese, Indians and British and The evacuation from Burma), I examine differences between written texts and memories of life in Burma. Thus, I offer an account of the social organisation and values of these families during their Burma years, contrasting their recollections with historical accounts written by British, Burmese and Indian writers. In Chapter 7, The return to India and after, I show how different kinds of memoiy continue to influence these families. Personal memories teach a pattern of individual behaviour which the families believe should be copied. I argue that social memoiy, by which information about appropriate behaviour for family members is transmitted, has been turned into cultural capital, through which the past is recreated and reinterpreted to transmit a paradigm for present behaviour which has enabled them to recover from the losses Remembering Burma: Tamil Migrants & Memories 2 Abstract incurred in fleeing from Burma and also taught them how to cope to their own satisfaction with the contemporary experience of diaspora. He who fights social intolerance, slavery and injustice need offer neither substitute nor constructive theory. Caste is a crippli^jg disease. The physicians duty is to guard against diseasb or destroy it. Yet no one considers the work of the physician as negative. The attainment of liberty and justice has always been a negative process. With­ out rebelling against social institutions and destroying custom there can never be the tree exercise of liberty and justice. A physician can, however, be of no use where there is no vita­ lity.

    ABSTRACT THE SEARCH FOR ‘HOME’: ANGLO-BURMAN IDENTITY AT THE END OF EMPIRE Katrina Chludzinski, PhD, Department of History Northern Illinois University, 2019 Trude Jacobsen, Director The study of mixed race populations and their identity formation have become important fields of historical research over the past few decades within the larger scope of colonialism. This dissertation explores how Anglo-Burmans formed and redefined their own place in the twentieth century as a consequence of conflicting perspectives on race and ‘belonging’ in the British Empire on the one hand, and majority Burman policies in the post-independence era on the other. These views are largely derived from archival records in the United Kingdom and Myanmar. Minutes from meetings as well as correspondence with Anglo-Burmans, British officials, and Burmese officials illustrated the complex situation the Anglo-Burman community found themselves in. Memoirs from Anglo-Burmans as well as contemporaneous print media help augment these perspectives. In this dissertation I show that Anglo-Burmans had different perspectives on their futures across temporal periods and often disagreed about how they should position themselves to best survive. The growth of the population in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries shaped how Anglo-Burmans understood their place and the degree to which they belonged in Burma. Complex British reactions to miscegenation between British men and Burmese women and the mixed-race offspring that arose from these relations left Britons in fear of their own futures in the colony. Given their connections to the colonial regime and consequent economic advantages, Anglo-Burmans thought of themselves as being superior to the Burmese population.

Arya is a Sanskrit word, which means ‘noble’, ‘lofty’. Nothing can be said with certainty about the original home of the Aryans. The most accepted theory is that they came from Iron or Central Asia around 1500 BC. The Aryans who came to India are called ‘Indo-Aryans’. The term Indo-Aryans refers to those who spoke Indo-Aryans languages, which include Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Oriya, Sindhi, Sinhala and Assamese. The Vedic Age may be divided into two periods – the Early Vedic Period (1500-1000 BC) and The Later Vedic Period (1000-600 BC), which is also known as the Epic Age. The Later Vedic Period begins with the settling down of Aryans in the Gangetic plains. Early Aryans Settlements The early Aryans lived in Sapt Sindhu region – the land of seven rivers. They named this region Brahmavarta , which means the land of Gods. It was during early period of the Aryans settlement that the Rig Veda was written. Later , the Aryans moved eastward and settled in different parts of the land. Gradually, they spread to the whole of Northern India. They cleared the forests and founded new settlements. The use of iron-axe made their job easier. They named this region Aryavarta , the land of Aryans. Aryans Literature:- The Vedas The information about the Aryans comes mainly from the Vedas. That is why this period of Indian history is called the Vedic Age.
