REFORMATION SUNDAY 25, 2020

Knowing Christ’s Love … Seeking His Will … Spreading His Word

Holy Communion is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that with the bread and the wine we also truly receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We call this belief the Doctrine of the Real Presence. Through the gift of Communion, the Lord bestows on us the forgiveness of sins and strengthens our union with Him and with one another.

Our Lord desires that those who commune should know and believe what they are receiving in Holy Communion (1 Corinthians 11:29), should be instructed in God’s Word so that they can properly examine themselves prior to communing (1 Corinthians 11:28), and should be united as one body in the faith (Acts 2:42 and 1 Corinthians 10:17).

Out of our heartfelt desire that all who commune at this altar be well prepared for Holy Communion, this congregation practices “close communion.” All who are presently communicant members in a congregation of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and those Lutheran churches that are in altar and pulpit fellowship with the LCMS are warmly invited to join us in Communion. All other guests are warmly invited to come to the communion rail for a blessing from the . Please cross your arms at the rail to receive the blessing.

We invite guests to visit with a pastor about how we commune together in the future.    Communicants may receive the wafer by having it placed directly into the mouth or by having it placed in the palm of the hand. If the communicant wishes to take the individual cup, please take one from the tray when the elder comes to your place at the communion rail. Drink from the individual cup only when the pastor/elder comes to your place at the communion rail with the chalice and speaks the words of distribution. If the communicant wishes to receive the chalice, do not take an individual cup from the tray carried by the elder.

The Lord has given His people the gift of His Body and His Blood in, with and under the consecrated bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins (St. Matthew 26:28). However, if an individual is allergic or intolerant to wheat or fermented wine, it is difficult to participate in this great fellowship. Should you be one of these individuals, we gladly provide gluten-free and alcohol-removed wine so that you are able to receive these gifts of God with your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Warm greetings to you, dear worshipper, in the name of our Risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May the blessings of His presence and His peace be with you throughout this week.

Guests: If you are a guest worshiping with us today, we are honored to have you join us in receiving the rich blessings that our Lord supplies to us through the gift of His holy Word. We invite you to return and worship with us again as the opportunity arises.

Children: Parents and their children are welcome to sit in the front of the church so that the children can see and hear the service clearly. The Family Room in the Narthex may be used by anyone who prefers or needs a more private setting.

Prayer Requests: If you have an intercession to add to our weekly prayers at church or to our daily Prayer Chain, please contact the Church Office or fill out one of the prayer request cards located in your pew and place it in the offering collection box.

Publications: We invite you to read our Trinity Weekly News and visit our bulletin boards for info about church activities. Publications including our monthly newsletter are available from the information stand in the Narthex and at various locations in the hallway.

Accessibility: A lift (slow-moving elevator) is located just outside the sanctuary overflow area for those who prefer not to take the stairs to the lower level. Ushers and many church members can assist with the operation of the lift.

Audio Assistance: We provide hearing-assist and closed captioning devices for the hearing impaired. If you would like to try these devices to see if they will enhance your worship experience, they are located in the Narthex. Audio and DVD recordings of the weekly service will be available from the Church Office later in the week.

Opening Hymn LSB 555 Salvation unto Us Has Come

9 Faith clings to Jesus’ cross alone D 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise And rests in Him unceasing; To Father, Son, and Spirit, And by its fruits true faith is known, The God who saved us by His grace; With love and hope increasing. All glory to His merit. For faith alone can justify; O triune God in heav’n above, Works serve our neighbor and supply You have revealed Your saving love; The proof that faith is living. Your blessèd name we hallow. Tune and text: Public domain

Confession and Absolution Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Service of the Word Introit Psalm 46, antiphon v. 7 P The LORD of hosts is with us; C the God of Jacob is our fortress. P God is our refuge and strength, C a very present help in trouble. P Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, C though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, P though its waters roar and foam, C though the mountains tremble at its swelling. P There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, C the holy habitation of the Most High. P God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; C God will help her when morning dawns P The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; C he utters his voice, the earth melts. P The LORD of hosts is with us; C the God of Jacob is our fortress. P Come, behold the works of the LORD, C how he has brought desolations on the earth P He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; C he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. P “Be still, and know that I am God. C I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P The LORD of hosts is with us; C the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P Let us pray. Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Sit First Reading Revelation 14:6–7 6Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 3:19–28 19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s

righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand Alleluia and Verse LSB 156

Holy Gospel John 8:31–36 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter.

31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” 34Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Sermon: “The Eternal Gospel” Revelation 14

Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum

The Word of the Lord endures forever

1 Peter 2:5

Stand Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen

Prayer of the Church P [after each petition]…. Lord, in Your mercy C hear our prayer.

Offertory LSB 159

Service of the Sacrament Preface LSB 160

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus LSB 161

Verba P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.

Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Pax Domini LSB 163

The Luther Seal: Summary of the Gospel

The most enduring symbol of the Lutheran is the seal that Luther himself designed to represent his theology. By the early 1520s, this seal begins to appear on the title page of Luther’s works.

Here is how Luther himself explained its meaning:

First, there is a black cross in a heart that remains its natural color. This is to remind me that it is faith in the Crucified One that saves us. Anyone who believes from the heart will be justified (Romans 10:10). It is a black cross, which mortifies and causes pain, but it leaves the heart its natural color. It doesn’t destroy nature, that is to say, it does not kill us but keeps us alive, for the just shall live by faith in the Crucified One (Romans 1:17). The heart should stand in the middle of a white rose. This is to show that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace—it puts the believer into a white, joyous rose. Faith does not give peace and joy like the world gives (John 14:27). This is why the rose must be white, not red. White is the color of the spirits and angels (cf. Matthew 28:3; John 20:12). This rose should stand in a sky-blue field, symbolizing that a joyful spirit and faith is a beginning of heavenly, future joy, which begins now, but is grasped in hope, not yet fully revealed. Around the field of blue is a golden ring to symbolize that blessedness in heaven lasts forever and has no end. Heavenly blessedness is exquisite, beyond all joy and better than any possessions, just as gold is the most valuable and precious metal.

A LIFE QUOTE FROM LUTHERANS FOR LIFE “I pray that the love of Christ emboldens you to rejoice in the Word and to speak it without fear of consequence…may future generations speak of us like we do of David, Josiah, Luther, and our forefathers. May our children say of you and me, ‘Our forefathers stood their ground on Christ alone, on His Word of truth alone.’ The truth has set you free. Enjoy your own personal reformation. Let your freedom in Christ be contagious! Let your life continue to shout: Thank Jesus Christ my Savior! I’m free at last…and so are you! Amen.” Rev. Peter Sulzle, St. John Lutheran Church, Redwood Falls, Minnesota

TRINITY GARDEN CLUB MEETING The Trinity Garden Club will meet on Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. Weather permitting, we will meet in the main parking lot. New members are welcome to join us! For more information, please call Chris Cott at (573) 864-6315.

ALL SAINTS’ DAY DIVINE WORSHIP Trinity will hold divine worship services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1. As some people may recall, our annual worship schedule for 2020 included a special combined service at 9:00 a.m. on November 1, All Saints’ Day. Because we are currently limited to 100 worshipers per service and do not want to turn anyone away, the Board of Elders has decided to hold two services at their regular times, rather than one combined service. Please remember that November 1 is also the day that Daylight Saving Time ends this year, so be sure to “fall back” before you come to church or pull up the livestream that morning. IN-PERSON WORSHIP SERVICES AND EVENTS Trinity is holding in-person worship services and on-site events. However, the COVID-19 pandemic requires several modifications to the way we meet for worship. Based on the most recent orders from the City of Columbia, we are observing the following practices:  If you are in the high-risk group as defined by the City of Columbia (65 or older or have an underlying medical condition), you are encouraged not to attend services or events.  If you have a cough, fever, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, or other COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend.  The most recent guidelines limit our occupancy to 100 people.  We are following strict social distancing guidelines. Households are encouraged to sit together, but groups must sit at least six feet from the nearest group, with vacant pews both in front of and behind each occupied pew. Please follow all written and verbal instructions given at the service.  Worshipers must wear face masks when attending worship services. Worshipers may, at their discretion, remove their face mask once in their seats and at least six feet from the nearest group. Face masks must be worn when arriving, leaving, or otherwise moving about the church. If you do not own a face mask or forget to bring one, we will provide a mask for you.  If you need to visit one of the or the Church Office, you must wear a face mask. If you have a meeting or other business at the church, the only time you may remove your mask is if you are alone in a room. Masks should be removed if you are playing a sport or other athletic activity.  Worship services are held at regular times: 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and 6:00 p.m. on Monday.  The 8:00 a.m. worship service will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/trinitylutherancomo.  A special worship service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, October 19 with extra safety measures. At this service, there will be no singing and masks must be worn at all times.  Communion will be offered at worship services as scheduled. Communion will also be available at other advertised times and by appointment.  Children’s Sunday School and Adult Sunday Bible Class meet in-person at 9:30 a.m. An adult Bible study is also available online at www.facebook.com/trinitylutherancomo. Fellowship Hour has been canceled through the end of the year.  Meetings and events may be held on site. Social distancing guidelines and all City of Columbia orders must be followed including rules for wearing face masks and for food preparation and service. As with worship services, high-risk and symptomatic persons are encouraged

not to attend events and meetings. STEWARDSHIP & SCRIPTURE

John 8:36 – “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Today we celebrate Reformation Day! Luther is rightly remembered as a champion of the Gospel, but he also called himself “the apostle of good works.” For only in being set free by the Gospel can we do good works. Jesus has set us free, and His blood covers over our sins. We stand before God as His beloved children, and we are invited to live our lives to His glory for the good of His kingdom. Brought to you by LCMS Stewardship Ministry and Trinity’s Board of Stewardship and Finance.
