CHAPTER Cybercrime classification and characteristics 12 Hamid Jahankhani, Ameer Al-Nemrat, Amin Hosseinian-Far INTRODUCTION The new features of crime brought about as a result of cyberspace have become known as cybercrime. Cybercrime is growing and current technical models to tackle cybercrime are in- efficient in stemming the increase in cybercrime. This serves to indicate that further preventive strategies are required in order to reduce cybercrime. Just as it is important to understand the characteristics of the criminals in order to understand the motiva- tions behind the crime and subsequently develop and deploy crime prevention strate- gies, it is also important to understand victims, i.e., the characteristics of the users of computer systems in order to understand the way these users fall victim to cybercrime. The term “cybercrime” has been used to describe a number of different concepts of varying levels of specificity. Occasionally, and at its absolute broadest, the term has been used to refer to any type of illegal activities which results in a pecuniary loss. This includes violent crimes against a person or their property such as armed robbery, vandalism, or blackmail. At its next broadest, the term has been used to refer only to nonviolent crimes that result in a pecuniary loss. This would include crimes where a financial loss was an unintended consequence of the perpetrator’s actions, or where there was no intent by the perpetrator to realize a financial gain for himself or a related party. For example, when a perpetrator hacks into a bank’s computer and either accidentally or intentionally deletes an unrelated depositor’s account records. -

We will examine how hacker values are realized and constituted by different legal, technical, and ethical activities of computer hacking—for example, free software production, cyberactivism and hactivism, cryptography, and the prankish games of hacker underground. We will pay close attention to how ethical principles are variably represented and thought of by hackers, journalists, and academics and we will use the example of hacking to address various topics on law, order, and politics on the Internet such as: free speech and censorship, privacy, security, surveillance, and intellectual property. We finish with an in-depth look at two sites of hacker and activist action: Wikileaks and Anonymous. LEARNER OBJECTIVES This will allow us to 1) demonstrate familiarity with variants of hacking 2) critically examine the multiple ways hackers draw on and reconfigure dominant ideas of property, freedom, and privacy through their diverse moral 1 codes and technical activities 3) broaden our understanding of politics of the Internet by evaluating the various political effects and ramifications of hacking. -

[email protected] version of Linux, is used on over two billion smartphones and other appli- ances. In this article, I provide some history about the early years of Linux. Linus was born into the Swedish minority of Finland (about 5% of the five million Finns). He was a “math guy” throughout his schooling. Early on, he “inherited” a Commodore VIC- 20 (released in June 1980) from his grandfather; in 1987 he spent his savings on a Sinclair QL (released in January 1984, the “Quantum Leap,” with a Motorola 68008 running at 7.5 MHz and 128 kB of RAM, was intended for small businesses and the serious hobbyist). It ran Q-DOS, and it was what got Linus involved: One of the things I hated about the QL was that it had a read-only operating system. You couldn’t change things ... I bought a new assembler ... and an editor.... Both ... worked fine, but they were on the microdrives and couldn’t be put on the EEPROM. So I wrote my own editor and assembler and used them for all my programming. Both were written in assembly language, which is incredibly stupid by today’s standards. -

Address Munging: the practice of disguising, or munging, an e-mail address to prevent it being automatically collected and used as a target for people and organizations that send unsolicited bulk e-mail address. Adware: or advertising-supported software is any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising material to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used. Some types of adware are also spyware and can be classified as privacy-invasive software. Adware is software designed to force pre-chosen ads to display on your system. Some adware is designed to be malicious and will pop up ads with such speed and frequency that they seem to be taking over everything, slowing down your system and tying up all of your system resources. When adware is coupled with spyware, it can be a frustrating ride, to say the least. Backdoor: in a computer system (or cryptosystem or algorithm) is a method of bypassing normal authentication, securing remote access to a computer, obtaining access to plaintext, and so on, while attempting to remain undetected. The backdoor may take the form of an installed program (e.g., Back Orifice), or could be a modification to an existing program or hardware device. A back door is a point of entry that circumvents normal security and can be used by a cracker to access a network or computer system. Usually back doors are created by system developers as shortcuts to speed access through security during the development stage and then are overlooked and never properly removed during final implementation. -

Ethics of Hacktivism by Tennille W. Scott and O. Shawn Cupp Introduction Do hacktivists have ethics? Some would say yes and others suggest that no, they do not. Are there rules that those who engage in hacking follow or abide by during the conduct of their activities? Does the hacktivist maintain any semblance of actions described under the just war theory? If so, it would seem to be only in jus in bello1 or the just conduct in war, due to the perpetual nature of hacker activities and hacktivist operations. First, what is a hacktivist?2 They are defined as those who through the nonviolent use for political ends of “illegal or legally ambiguous digital tools” like website defacements, information theft, website parodies, denial-of-service attacks, virtual sit-ins, and virtual sabotage.3 This provides the basis for understanding more about where hacktivists’ motivations come from and what kinds of ideologies they may exhibit. Nevertheless, hacktivists must conform to some sort of norm. Based upon the nature of hacktivist activities, there must be a way to categorize or identify their overarching ethic. Understanding the motivation of this group is a huge undertaking because of the great variance and diversity of the people who make up the hacktivist collective. Unlike cyberterrorists, who typically belong to a hierarchical group structure and have a common cause, hacktivists are not bound in the same way, which makes them more dynamic and difficult to analyze. A prime example is the hacktivist group known as Anonymous and its spinoff group, Lulz Security (LulzSec), who eventually participated in different activities with different motives. -

Introduction Making and Hacking Annika Richterich and Karin Wenz “While hacking is a wonderful way of viewing the world, ‘making’ was a more positive framing for customizing and changing the world.” (DOUGHERTY 2014) In August 2014, hackerspaces in the Netherlands issued an open letter to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (PPS): in this document, members of hacker communi- ties from Amsterdam, Heerlen, Utrecht and other cities called upon the govern- mental institution to revise the definition of ‘hacking’ as presented on its website (Walboer et al. 2014). While the PPS described it as “breaking into computers without permission”, the hackerspace members highlighted that hacking refers to citizens’ creative engagement with technologies. Opposing the reduction of hacking to illegal activities, they described hacking as exploration of technological possibilities and boundaries in unforeseen, innovative ways. Even though this particular initiative was started in the Netherlands, the letter echoes wider, historical as well as ongoing negotiations regarding the meanings and origins of hacking. It seems closely related to earlier requests such as an open letter to the Wall Street Journal which was written more than 20 years ago by Richard Stallman (presumably). In this letter, the founder of the Free Software Foundation states: There’s nothing shameful about the hacking I do. But when I tell people I am a hacker, people think I’m admitting something naughty – because newspapers such as yours misuse the word ‘hacker’, giving the impression that it means ‘security breaker’ and nothing else. You are giving hackers a bad name. (Raymond 1996: 532) While one cannot find any explicit reference to this letter on Stallman’s own website, similar statements were made in his article ‘On Hacking’ (n.
