Peter is from Northern Ireland. The name of his message was “I Believe in Child Labor, Sweatshops, and Torture.” Your first impression is probably similar to mine. But Peter is the type of speaker is the type of person who tries to provoke you. The message was actually on the meaning of faith. And Peter’s point is that if you say you don’t be- lieve in sweatshops or child labor and yet you buy your clothes at the cheapest place knowing this company utilizes cheap labor, children, and horrible working conditions in third world countries, then your actions betray you. You believe in sweat shops and child labor. For Peter Rollins, our actions reveal what we really believe. I was thinking about this concerning church. Someone recently said to me that they weren’t sure if they had faith anymore. I wanted to tell them that faith is not some- thing you have, but something you practice. God isn’t a proposition on a page that we adhere to but a presence, a person, a mystery that we come to trust and follow, in covenant with others. And we follow through different disciplines like worship, study, fellowship, and service. Don’t get me wrong. I know there are those who struggle with their faith who find it difficult to be a part of the faith community. But then again, I know others who are here every Sunday, struggling with their faith and at- tempting to work it out. There isn’t any way in the world, I could have faith if I wasn’t regularly receiving the Lord’s Supper, gathering with others for worship, studying the scriptures, listening to my sisters and brothers who are on this journey with me, and reaching out in compas- sion for others. It would like attempting to keep a fire going without fuel. Eventually it goes out. What does it mean for you to believe in God? If there is a God, would faith be some- thing you could separate from the rest of your life? Our lives will reveal what we be- lieve in. If that were the case, what would your life reveal? That you believe in Sunday golf or “Meet the Press?” Or that you believe in Pop Warner Football or soccer? I’m not attempting to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. I’m just asking that you reflect on this question? What do you believe in? What would your lives reveal about what’s most important? Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” If you’re interested in more about Peter Rollins, you can go to his blog, http://peterrollins.net/?cat=276. Give it a shot. He’s a pretty fascinating guy. -The Rev. Ed Rawls Page 2 Summer Worship Schedule It’s summer time. As I spoke about last month, in the liturgical year it’s Ordinary Time. But for us, it’s a chance to do things less formally and much differently. We attempt things and we preach on subjects we wouldn’t normally do during the rest of the year. Please join us for what for me is a very special time. July 3rd – Ms. Jane Ellingwood, from Bethel Congregational Church, will be preaching and leading in worship, while Rev. Rawls is attending the 28th General Synod of the UCC. July 10th – Summer Worship – The Sermon, “Ask the Pastor.” This is the one Sunday of the year when you can write down any question that you would like Rev. Rawls to attempt to answer. We will also be receiving new members. July 17th – Scripture – “Experiencing the God of Creation” Scripture – Genesis 1:1-14. We will try not just to read and interpret, but experience the beauty of this poetic rendition of creation in music, poetry, and possibly multi-media. July 24th – Alan Lewis will also come and share a little of his faith journey over the past nine months. This will be a time of testimony, song, and a short homily. July 31st – Sermon, “Telling the Story” the Rev. Ed Rawls will attempt something he has never done before, he will attempt to tell the whole biblical story in FIFTEEN minutes; better make that twenty! August 7th – Annual Beach Service, Holy Communion, Again we will join with Lordship Community Church for worship at Short Beach in Lordship. The service will be at 9:00am instead of 10:00am. This way we beat the heat. The Rev. Rawls will be preaching this time. PLEASE REMEMBER, THERE IS NO SERVICE AT THE SANCTUARY. August 14th, 21st , and 28th, There will be guest speakers as the Rev. Rawls is away on vacation. Page 3 “SUMMER GIFTS FROM GOD” I know, I say this often. I say it because it’s true. But next to the gift of Jesus Christ, and God’s presence in our lives, the greatest gift God gives us is each other. And when new members join our church, it’s like receiving gifts from heaven. On Sunday, July 10th, five new members will join First Congregational Church. They are Zeanith and Erin McNemar, Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Arnette, and Debora Lindberg. All have been on their different journeys with God, and through that journey, they have been lead to us. We are so grateful and are filled with such deep appreciation to have them become of a part of this covenant family.
