Javier Newsletter |Open Mic |May 2021 Ch-ch-ch-changes Stay tuned in for upcoming changes to our programming schedule. We are working to bring you more of what you Program Schedule love to listen to. We are also very excited to introduce our Legacy Giving Donate program, which will begin in June. You can help sustain community radio in mid-Missouri by including a bequest to KOPN in your will or trust. The process is easier than you might think and allows you to play a critical role in helping Livestream us build stability and sustain the work of KOPN for years to come. Javier "El Pollo" Bautista crows goodbye after 17 years of excelente programming Saturday, May 15th, 2004 was the date of El Pollo's first show on KOPN. His Saturday morning program, "El Festival del Pollo," was the first to offer three entire hours of Spanish language programming on our airwaves. You can catch him from 9 a.m. to noon for the next two Saturdays. El Pollo's last day on the airwaves will be Saturday, May 15th. You can also stream "El Festival del Pollo" from your computer or smartphone from anywhere in the world. Q: When did you arrive in Columbia? A: I arrived in the US in February 2001, and lived in Berlin, Maryland. I didn’t like it because of the cold weather, and work was scarce in that season. Later, I discovered that a friend of mine from Mexico was living in Columbia, MO. I contacted him to ask what Columbia was like. I liked what I heard and I came to Columbia in April 2001 and have been here since. Q: What is your musical background? A: Since we were very young, my brothers and I had a mobile DJ set in our hometown, Veracruz, Mexico. We played music at weddings, quinceañeras (the American equivalent is a prom), and other special events until I was 26 years old. Later, I was a DJ in a table dance venue until I was 32. I’ve been in contact with music during my whole life, but I was not a radio host/DJ until I got involved with KOPN. Q: Do you play any instruments? A: Unfortunately, no. I would have loved to play guitar, drums, and keyboard. Q: So KOPN was your first experience with radio broadcasting? A: After a while working here and there, a work friend suggested that I listen to a Spanish radio program at KOPN called “La Hora Latina.” They played music I didn’t know so I started to think about ways to improve the format and make the program more popular. I did my research to learn who could help me contact KOPN and Eduardo Crespi (Manager and Founder of Centro Latino) was the person to do this. That was the beginning of my seventeen years at the station. Q: What do you think about the community aspect of KOPN? A: I think it is a great model for running a radio station. It is unique because it relies mostly on listener contributions, something I had never seen, as well as grants. I’ve been able to do the show my way, without commercials that take up a lot of time. That’s great! Q: What’s your favorite type of music? A: I don’t have a favorite music. I like almost any type of music except gospel, heavy rock, and the so-called Duranguense (from the Mexican state of Durango). Q: What are you going to miss after May 15? A: I will miss everything. It’s going to be a bit difficult to get used to not doing my show on the radio, but it is necessary because I have to focus on other projects and on my health. Q: Will you return someday? A: You should never say never, but actually I think I’m not going to return. It would be difficult to start again and I will be focused on other activities, a new phase of my life. Q: Are there any stories you’d like to share from your time at KOPN? A: It would be a long list. What strikes me the most is quitting my job at the University of Missouri not once, but twice! They wanted to change my schedule and have me work on Saturdays, but I preferred doing my show at KOPN on Saturdays, even though I earned nothing there. I did this for my love of the radio! Thank you for your time, dedication, and service to the community during these seventeen years and good luck with your new projects, Pollo! We could not provide local news, diverse music, and engaging discussions without the dedication of our programmers. La familia del Pollo Are you fully vaccinated? For centuries, it has linked the eastern and western regions of the Indian subcontinent, running from Bengal, across north India, into Peshawar, Pakistan. Horses, donkeys, and pedestrians compete with huge trucks, cars, motorcycles, rickshaws, and bicycles along the highway, a commercial route that is dotted with areas of activity right off the road: truck stops, farmer’s stands, bus stops, and all kinds of commercial activity.

A MULTIMEDIA PROJECT ON AGING IN MID MISSOURI University of Missouri School of Journalism Professional Project in partial completion of the Requirements for the degree Master of Arts by DIHUI SHELLY YANG Spring 2014 PROJECT COMMITTEE Keith Greenwood (Chair) Assistant Professor University of Missouri School of Journalism David L. Rees Professor | Chair, Photojournalism Faculty University of Missouri School of Journalism Brian W. Kratzer Assistant Professor University of Missouri School of Journalism Acknowledgements My project may not be perfect, but it would not have been completed without the support and encouragement from my committee. I would like to give my sincere and grateful thanks to all my committee members for believing my fancy and unrealistic dreams and not laughing at my mediocre results. Brian has such a talent for finding out commendable points out of trashy work. He squeezes time from his forever-busy schedule to discuss editing ideas with me with full of patience. I believe having such dedicated mentors for each student is the very reason that this school is always thriving and glorious. Gaining access is in many cases the most difficult part of doing a documentary. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the Columbia Missourian. Being a Missourian reporter helped me so much in blending in with these seniors who have been loyal readers of the newspaper all their life. I was also very lucky to have met Ellen Gallo, one of the only four Lenoir residents who showed up at my project presentation at Lenoir last June. She introduced me a list of subjects and paved my way into the retirement home.
