T'he restrlts on Casti I I e a seed indicated that the germination percent increaserf witfr j-ncreased fight intensity" Germination v/as inhibite<1 by red filtered Iight' Seed germinated readily at temperatures between 3.8 and 20"C but was inhib-ited at 2t2'C. The results indicated that light was not required for Anemone seed germination. The germina- tion percent increased as temperature increase'1 from 2'2 to 2l'C. Extensive damping-off in vitro was controlled only by dry benomyl. Moist after-ripening of Anemone seed decreased the percent germination. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses.     How to Identify New Brunswick Violets Sponsored by the New Brunswick Botany Club Introduction : Violets are always exciting to find while walking in the field in early summer. They are so easy to identify as to their genus. However, most people will stop there, because they are not easy to identify at the species level - many minute characteristics must be examined...and they easily form difficult to describe hybrids. Approached in the right mix of adventurousness and humility, sorting out violets can be fun. However, should efforts end in exasperation, just keep in mind that the violets never read the botany books. (Choukas-Bradley 2004). In order to correctly identify violets the following features must be examined : these are stems, leaves and flowers. Above-ground stems are : a) acaulescent (stemless) b) caulescent (stemmed) In acaulescent species the rhizomes or stolons gives rise to a crown of basal leaves and flowers. Care should be taken to assess the position of leaves since some species (i.e. Viola adunca and Viola labradorica - caulescent species) may have very short (less than 1 cm) stems at flowering and may appear acaulescent. Below-ground stems are : a) slender rhizome b) stout rhizome c) taproot Rhizomes are slender (mostly 1 to 3 mm thick) and travel horizontally underground, or stout (mostly 4 to 6 mm thick) and are usually oriented vertically underground - these are the perennials. Annuals have a vertical, fibrous root known as a taproot. To evaluate a slender versus a stout rhizome in the field, just place your thumb and index vertically around the base of a plant, near the soil.

A new species of Selenipedium (Orchidaceae: Cypripedioideae) from northern Ecuador is described here and its affinities are discussed. A key to the known species of the genus is provided. KEY WORDS: Selenipedium, slipper orchid, Ecuador, new species, dichotomous key Selenipedium, a small genus of slipper orchid Plants of Ecuador. One of these, Selenipedium (Orchidaceae: Cypripedioideae) whose range aequinoctiale, was described from northern Ecuador, extends from Panama south to Ecuador and east to whereas he identified the other, based on a sterile Trinidad, French Guiana and eastern Brazil, is the specimen from Succumbios Province in north- basal clade in the subfamily Cypripedioideae. It has eastern Ecuador (cited as Davis 1048 at AMES), recently been revised by Cribb (2009).
