KUWAIT CITY, April 15: A clear absence of clients, quiet corridors of ministries, and offi ces that are almost empty of employees – this is the general scene in the ministries complex during the working hours in the month of Ramadan so far. Calm prevailed in many offi ces in light of the commitment of some government agencies to the number of employees not exceeding 30 percent, reports Al-Qabas daily. During the tour in the corridors of government agen- cies, it was noticed that the employees were congratu- lating one another and wishing well to each other in this month of Ramadan. The discussions that trended among the employees were mainly concerning the par- tial curfew and their inability to meet their daily needs due to the lack of time, as well as concerning politics and social affairs. A striking aspect that was noticed was the decrease in the number of employees due to the commitment of government agencies to operate on a 30-percent workforce capacity in all its departments, and reduced working hours to about four and a half hours. It was also noted that the employees adhere to the Cabinet’s instructions regarding health and preventive requirements at workplaces based on the instructions of the health authorities. A number of clients affi rmed to the daily that they did not face any diffi culties in completing their transactions, that there were suffi cient parking spaces for their cars, and they did not experience any congestion like in the past. They explained that they did not come across any obsta- cles in completing their transactions despite the decrease in the number of employees in compliance with the decision of the Council of Ministers. Some government agencies have automated their services, which enabled many of them to complete their transactions online. This turned out to be one of the advantages of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it pushed the authorities to adopt e-services. Director General of the Directorate General for Civil Aviation Eng. Yousef Al-Fawzan issued a circular regarding working hours during the month of Ramadan. In the circular, he declared that work in DGCA will start from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and called for the observance of health and preventive requirements. Meanwhile, the offi cial spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works and the Public Authority for Roads and Land Transport, Engineer Abdullah Al-Ajmi announced the minis- try invites applications for vacant supervisory positions. Big-business acts Pushback against voting ‘measures’ gains motion WASHINGTON, April 15, (AP): Big business has ratch- eted up its objections to proposals that would make it harder to vote, with several hundred companies and ex- ecutives signing a new statement opposing “any discrimi- natory legislation.” The letter, published Wednesday in and The Washington Post, was signed by compa- nies including Amazon, Google, Starbucks and Bank of America, and individuals such as Warren Buffett and Mi- chael Bloomberg, plus law fi rms and nonprofi t groups. It was the largest group yet to join protests against Re- publican efforts to change election rules in states around the country. “Voting is the lifeblood of our democracy and we call upon all Americans to join us in tak- ing a nonpartisan stand for this most basic and fundamental right of all Americans,” the letter reads. “We all should feel a responsibility to defend the right to vote and oppose any dis- criminatory legislation or measures that restrict or prevent any eligible voter from having an equal and fair opportunity to cast a ballot.” Many of the signers have been loyal donors to Republican political Bloomberg campaigns. EU eyes Pfi zer jabs Blocking ‘seats’ on plane cuts virus risk NEW YORK, April 15, (AP): A new study says leaving middle seats open could give airline passengers more pro- tection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Researchers said the risk of passengers being exposed to the virus from an infected person on the plane could be re- duced by 23% to 57% if middle seats are empty, compared with a full fl ight. The study released Wednesday supports the response of airlines that limited seating early in the pandemic. How- ever, all US airlines except Delta now sell every seat they can, and Delta will stop blocking middle seats on May 1. The airlines argue that fi lters and air-fl ow systems on most planes make them safe when passengers wear face masks, as they are now required to do by federal regulation. Researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Preven- tion which is head by Rochelle P. Walensky and Kansas State Univer- sity estimated how far airborne virus particles travel inside a plane. They used mannequins that emitted aero- sol to measure the fl ow of virus parti- cles through airline cabin mock-ups. First public performance NY Philharmonic back on stage after 13 mths NEW YORK, April 15, (AP): Esa-Pekka Salonen walked on stage to join the New York Philharmonic, which had not gathered before an audience for exactly 400 days. “On behalf of all us on stage, welcome back,” the conductor told the crowd Wednesday night. “We have been dreaming of this moment for a long time.” The philharmonic gave its fi rst public performance after of a historic hiatus of more than 13 months caused by the coronavirus pandemic, playing at the Shed in Brookfi eld Place, about 2 miles from its un- der-renovation Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. “I’m kind of on a euphoric high right now, be- cause I missed it more than I realized,” concertmaster Frank Huang said afterwards. There was a reduced force of 23 strings - all masked - and no brass or woodwinds for a program that lasted one hour: Caroline Shaw’s “Entr’acte,” Jean Silbelius’ “Rakastava (The Lover)” and Richard Strauss’ “Metamorphosen.” The cavernous Shed, which Salonen opened in April 2019, had a masked audience of 150 spaced out in groups of one and two folding chairs, about 10 feet between each set, in a venue that usually seats about 1,200. There were electronic tickets with timed entry, and Essa-Pekka Salonen, music director of the San Francisco Symphony and principal conductor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, leads members of the New York temperatures were taken upon entry.
