Team American [photo: Terry Custodio Auva’a] Samoa wrestlers make it to medal rounds Just as the last days of the 2017 Ashgabat Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games were coming to an end, two of Team American Samoa’s wrestlers took the American Samoa Flag all the way to the quarterfi nal round in Men’s Greco Roman Wrestling: Daniel Missalefua (71kg) and Nolan Puletasi (85kg) Samoa News coverage of the Games is sponsored by Carl’s Jr. Both wrestlers had tough quarterfi nal bouts, with both putting up a good fi ght but eventually, they lost, sending them to wrestle for the bronze where Nolan Puletasi faced off against older wrestler Owelekow Syhazberdi of Turkmenistan. Owelekow, who comes from a long line of wrestlers, was victorious, despite Puletasi’s valiant attempt to gain the win. The Clippers’ third annual Training Camp trip to Hawaii will include a preseason game against Russell Westbrook, James Harden and the Houston Rockets on Thursday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. HT and another against the Chinese Basketball Association’s (CBA) Shanghai Sharks, owned and run by retired NBA star Yao Ming, on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m. HT. Both games will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. “All of Clipper Nation is excited to return to the Hawaiian Islands this fall,” said Gillian Zucker, Clippers President of Business Operations. “Every year, we hear from our players, fans and staff about how much they look forward to starting the season in Honolulu. While in Hawaii, our players have the opportunity to grow together as a team, our fans are able to enjoy the hospitality of the islands - plus Clippers basketball - and we leave with a lasting spirit of Aloha.” The successful partnership between the Clippers and HTA will positively impact Hawaiian residents through a number of opportunities for local youth, coaches and sports fans. As part of the agreement between the Clippers and HTA, the Clippers will host a youth basketball clinic and a coaches clinic in Hawaii, and also refurbish a local school’s computer lab.

Player Centrality on NBA Teams Sohum Misra ([email protected]) Stanford University SCPD Student 1. Introduction The NBA is entering its golden age of statistical analysis with teams all over the league trying to employ novel techniques to gain an edge on their competitors. Although it is not as statistically motivated as baseball, the league has shifted its focus to advanced statistics to be able to determine the value of a player that may not be obviously tangible. The goal of this project and paper is to build on work done in this domain by applying some concepts of graph theory to the problem. I will be constructing many network models of NBA line-ups and will try to optimize different metrics to determine node centrality. The goal of the project is to (a) determine who the best players in the NBA are according to these network models, (b) determine who the most important players are on each team and (c) compare these findings to some of the most popular advanced statistics that are used by teams today. The data-set for this project is NBA line-up data for the last five completed seasons (beginning from the 2012-13 season up to the 2016-17 season). 2. Related Work 2.1 Five-man line-up analysis This kind of network analysis to evaluate player performance and centrality in the NBA is based on Evaluating Basketball Player Performance via Statistical Network Modeling by Piette et al. [1] In that paper, the authors designed this methodology for evaluating player performance and used it to determine the most important players in four NBA seasons (2006- 07 to 2009-10).
