New Design Values Southern Pine New design values for all sizes and grades of visually graded Southern Pine dimension lumber were approved by the American Lumber Standard Committee and became effective June 1, 2013. The new values were reduced by 25-30% and primarily affect the design of roof trusses. The prescriptive tables for joists and raf- ters in the 2014 Indiana Building Code re- flect the reduced values; however, those in the 2005 Indiana Residential Code do not. Builders should use the revised span tables developed by the American Wood Council and available at http://www.southernpine. com/new-design-values/. IBA’s Governmental Affairs Team will continue to provide updates on changes that impact you and to advocate for cost-ef- fective and affordable building codes, stan- dards and regulations that govern residen- tial construction.
