Els tatuatges de Beth Hart no dissimulen aquestes marques, però afortunadament, ara la cantant nord- americana està passant per un ràpid procés de cura en el millor moment de la seva vida, personal i professional. Per aquells que no la coneguin, Beth Hart (Los Angeles 1972) és actualment una de les veus més potents del planeta, una veu privilegiada i una gran multi instrumentista. Beth Hart és actualment una de les artistes més potents del panorama Blues, Soul i Rythm & Blues, molt a l'estil de Janis Joplin, una dona de 46 anys que desprèn força, ràbia i passió, una dona de vida dura i passat agitat que aviat va marxar de casa seva per conèixer món. Aquest viatge indispensable s'ha anat plasmant al llarg d'una discografia que va començar fa 22 anys i que entre moments àlgids i caigudes ha anat retratant les seves passions. Hart és una artista impactant, demolidora i amb un directe imprescindible. Sap barrejar a la perfecció el Blues més intens amb el Rock, el Soul i el Rock Americà, a l'alçada dels millors artistes de la història. Més que influències, amb Beth Hart caldria buscar referents, els seus són Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Robert Plant, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Aretha Franklin, Etta James i la seva estimada Amy Winehouse. Beth Hart va començar a tocar el piano als 4 anys i els seus pares la van inscriure a classes particulars amb una professora, quan Beth Hart tenia al voltant de vuit anys, la professora de piano es va adonar que la petita Beth no havia après a llegir música, perquè ella li tocava la peça i després li donava la partitura perquè practiqués a casa, simplement tocava la peça fent veure que l'estava llegint. A l'adolescència, Beth compartia gustos musicals (Black Sabbath i Led Zeppelin, entre d'altres) amb la seva millor amiga Sarah, a més de festes, drogues i alcohol. Com a conseqüència d'això, va començar a consumir drogues amb la seva germana Sharon (que agafaria el VIH per compartir xeringues), Sharon patiria una greu addicció a les drogues (Beth després li dedicaria la cançó Sister Heroine). Uns anys més tard, Hart va saber que el seu abús de les drogues era conseqüència d'un trastorn bipolar que patia des de petita. Tot i que va ser diagnosticada a temps, no la van medicar perquè la seva mare pensava que era ridícul que una nena de dotze anys prengués medicació per aquesta malaltia. La història de la carrera musical de Beth Hart comença quan el seu amic i mànager, David Wolff, la veu tocar als carrers de Los Angeles. En qüestió de setmanes tenia un contracte discogràfic amb Atlantic Recods. Tres dels productors de més èxit del negoci musical, David Foster, Hugh Padgem i Mike Clink, es van posar d'acord per treballar conjuntament en el seu àlbum de debut, Immortal (1996). Què és això que veu tothom de la Beth i del que ella ni se'n adona?, tots van sentir el mateix, una veu que t'inspira, et transforma i et porta al fons de l'ànima. Esta claríssim que si cal parlar d'influències, la més òbvia és la de Janis Joplin, i per descomptat no va ser casualitat que la triessin per interpretar a la cantant texana al musical Love Janis, estrenat al 2001. En aquest vídeo es veu com s'hi deixa l'anima, com la seva mestra, en un dels seus temes originals de més èxit, Am I The One, de l'àlbum, Immortal (1996), en que també és evident la influència de Led Zeppelin. Hart va admetre començar a sentir-se compositora a partir d'aquest disc. Em vaig convertir en consumidora diària de drogues i alcohol, fins al punt de quedar-me en la pell i l'os i caure'm el cabell?. Als 27 anys i per segona vegada, Hart es va tornar a enganxar a les drogues, era el 1999, l'any del seu èxit. Es podien repetir els fatídics 27 anys que es van emportar a Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin i Amy Winehouse. La van acomiadar de la discogràfica Atlantic i va ser hospitalitzada per abús d'alcohol i drogues, aleshores es quan es va assabentar del seu trastorn bipolar i va començar a tractar-se. Des d'aquell moment, va deixar de consumir drogues i alcohol, així ho explicava, ?Una de les coses més importants per un artista jove és saber que no nomes encertem per dir no, sinó que si no ho fem morirem?. El seu aleshores mànager, Scott Guetzkow, li va oferir la mà (literalment, al 2000 es casaven a Las Vegas) i Hart es va agafar a la música per deixar enrere els problemes. ?Tan aviat com vaig començar a reprendre el vol de tot allò, em vaig sentir més viva i agraïda a la música?. A poc a poc, Hart ho va anar superant i es va centrar a escriure cançons que expressen les seves experiències i que evidencien les seves influències musicals. A partir d'aquí van arribar els reconeixements, fins que el seu tercer àlbum, Leave The Light On (2003), es convertia en disc de platí i el single Learning To Live era número 1 a Dinamarca. Va ser el principi d'una història d'amor de Beth Hart amb Europa que encara dura, i que es va consolidar amb l'àlbum en directe Live At Paradiso (2005), un àlbum estratosfèric, increïble i brutal, aquest directe és per bavejar i degustar durant un parell d'hores. Gravat a la llegendària sala Paradiso d'Amsterdam, i editat en CD i DVD, l'àlbum, amb cançons escrites per Hart i una versió de Whole Lotta Love de Led Zeppelin transmet tot el feeling, l'energia i el sentiment de la brillant Beth Hart. El següent àlbum en solitari seria My Califòrnia (2010), amb temàtica centrada en la seva vida personal, i el single My Califòrnia va posar música a l'escena final de l'últim capítol de la sèrie Californication. De nou, Jeff Beck decideix convidar-la a cantar en el concert d'homenatge a Buddy Guy per la seva contribució a la cultura nord-americana al Kennedy Center Honors, on es va emportar una de les grans ovacions de la nit, allà, literalment, va emocionar al president Barak Obama, la seva dona, il·lustres com Led Zeppelin o al mateix Buddy Guy amb la seva interpretació de I'd Rather Go Blind de Etta James.
