REMARKS INTENDED FOR DELIVERY ON THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE AMERICAN ANTITRUST INSTITUTE’S 2019 AWARD FOR ANTITRUST ACHIEVEMENT BY STEPHEN CALKINS* [The vagaries of travel resulted in Professor Stephen Calkins’s arriving eight hours late for the American Antitrust Institute’s 2019 Annual Meeting, June 20, 2019, at which he was scheduled to accept the 2019 Alfred E. Kahn Award for Antitrust Achievement. The many attendees thus heard neither Federal Trade Commission Chair Joseph Simons’s introduction of Professor Calkins nor Professor Calkins’s acceptance. Professor Calkins agreed to type up his informal notes to approximate the remarks as they would have been delivered.] Thank you, FTC Chairman Joe Simons. I appreciate the kind remarks and, indeed, your agreeing to introduce me. You and I both support energetic, bi-partisan competition enforcement, so it is especially appropriate that a Republican Chair would introduce a Pitofsky General Counsel. AAI President Diana Moss gave me my assignment by email: “the goal would be to connect your diversity of experience in academia and domestic and international enforcement to the challenges facing the antitrust enterprise, in the U.S. and abroad. How you do that is totally up to you!” The schedule allowed me ten minutes. The import category Quick 6 Package Stores .......4 continues to be hot for us! Corona and Guinness are growing nicely but if you haven’t tried Modelo Especial or Pacifico you are missing out on some extra Stats Bar and Grill ...............5 sales! The wine and spirits category remains healthy, and I believe part of it is that they are more “sexy” than beer. Their innovation in packaging and flavors keep getting the consumer’s attention, and thus their dollars. Our foray into New Products .....................6 spirits continues to do well and grow. Millercoors Reports Lower Third Quarter Underlying Net Income
MILLERCOORS REPORTS LOWER THIRD QUARTER UNDERLYING NET INCOME BUT HIGHER NET REVENUE PER BARREL Coors Light and Miller Lite Gain Market Share of Premium Light Segment in the Third Quarter November 5, 2015 (London and Denver) – SABMiller plc (LN:SAB; OTC:SABMRY) and Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE: TAP; TSX: TPX) reported that third quarter MillerCoors underlying net income declined 8.6 percent to $344.4 million versus the same period in the prior year, driven by lower volume and increased marketing investment, partially offset by lower cost of sales, positive sales mix and net pricing growth. For the second consecutive quarter, Coors Light and Miller Lite both gained market share of the Premium Light segment, with Miller Lite delivering volume growth. Combined, Coors Light and Miller Lite delivered their best quarterly performance in three years. “As we relentlessly pursue total portfolio growth, job number one is taking share and growing our American Light Lagers. This past quarter, we took a step in this direction by taking segment share with both Coors Light and Miller Lite,” said Gavin Hattersley, MillerCoors Chief Executive Officer. “We have a lot of work ahead of us to address our economy segment performance, but all other segments across our portfolio are in good shape as we close out the year.
