Sport and the Social Significance of Pleasure Sport and the Social Signifi cance of Pleasure This innovative text’s critical examination foregrounds the prime reason why so many people participate in or watch sport—pleasure. Although there has been a “turn” to emotions and affect within academia over the last two decades, it is somewhat remiss that pleasure, as an integral aspect of human life, has not received greater attention from sociologists of sport, exercise and physical education. This book addresses this issue with an unabashed examination of sport and the moving body via a “pleasure lens.” It pro- vides new insights about the production of various identities, power relations and social issues, and the dialectical links between the socio-cultural and the body. Taking a wide-sweeping view of pleasure—dignifi ed and debauched, distinguished and mundane—it examines topics as diverse as aging, health, fandom, running, extreme sports, biopolitics, consumerism, feminism, sex and sexuality. In drawing from diverse theoretical approaches and original empirical research, the text reveals the social and political signifi cance of plea- sure and provides a more rounded, dynamic and sensual account of sport. Richard Pringle is an Associate Professor in the School of Curriculum and Pedagogy in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland. Robert E. Rinehart is Associate Professor in Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Waikato.     Archived BBC public responses to complaints 2014 The One Show, BBC One, 14 January 2014 Complaint We have received complaints about Paul O'Grady's appearance on the One Show on 14 January. Some viewers felt that his views on benefit reform were not adequately challenged. BBC's Response The One Show is a topical magazine programme which occasionally reports on prominent news stories. Following media coverage of the debate around Channel Four's Benefits Street, The One Show asked members of the public for their views on the programme. A variety of opinions were heard from all sides of the debate. Following this, and in keeping with One Show tradition, the presenters discussed the issues raised with that day's studio guest, Paul O'Grady. Paul was clearly identified as a Labour supporter, and he was challenged on how he would reduce the benefits bill. Paul's views were forthright, and on reflection more could have been done to put them into context, but it is important to note that balance can be achieved across a number of programmes, and this is a subject that the One Show has covered before and hopes to revisit again in the future. Kite surfing is one of the upcoming popular extreme sports, where very few have studied the mechanical forces that act on the body. There are several factors that contribute to mechanical stress, and for preventing injuries it is of interest to investigate how these forces affect the body and how we can develop the equipment and prepare the athletes for making it as safe as possible. This project will study injury prevalence, motion analysis and mapping of forces and pressure during kite surfing.     Philosophical Vignettes at Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura 2.1-13 In a forthcoming article, Chris Eckerman offers a new interpretation of DRN 2.7-8, arguing that tenere…templa serena refers to practicing ataraxia. I am in agreement with Eckerman’s suggestion. The purpose of this talk is to consider interpretive ramifications, left unaddressed, deriving from his philological argument. I argue that Lucretius begins his proem by developing vignettes around cornerstone concepts in the Epicurean ethical doctrine. I suggest that Lucretius develops an argumentative tricolon, with two vignettes emphasizing aponia (1-2, 5-6) and one vignette emphasizing ataraxia (7-13). Scholars have already recognized that, in the proem, Lucretius develops the idea that the Epicurean life offers security (asphaleia) (cf. Konstan 2008, 32), but, since we have not recognized, until recently, that the third member of the tricolon references ataraxia, we have not recognized that Lucretius develops a tricolon dedicated specifically to reflection on aponia in the first two limbs and on ataraxia in the third. That is to say, the proem does not focus on security generally but on the security that may be had in aponia and ataraxia specifically. The first two lines provide Lucretius’ first vignette on aponia. The term laborem (2) is programmatic, for, as M.
