12-27 October 2018 - the Longest Running Rural UK fi Lm Festival - Over 70 Films in 34 Venues Including PURBECK nd Film 2222 festival YEAR 12-27 October 2018 - The longest running rural UK fi lm festival - Over 70 films in 34 venues including FOLLOW US ON www.purbeckfilm.com PURBECK Film Festival 2018 wenty two years ago Purbeck Film Festival screened its first programme at the Rex Cinema in Wareham and Tbecame the precursor to all the varied festivals that now entertain so many of us in the Isle of Purbeck. Operating on a turnover of £50,000 the festival has 30 volunteers and an annual audience of nearly 7000. With over 30 screenings in village halls, pubs, hotels and churches, the festival provides a perfect opportunity for people to share experiences and help restate a sense of community across the Isle of Purbeck. eventy-six dynamic films and documentaries have been selected from SThailand, Lebanon, Hungary, Korea, France, US, Pakistan, India, Sweden, Romania and the UK. It is the magical hallucination of cinema that oers the opportunity to visit so many countries. Love, deceit, thrill, adventure, sorrow: so many captivating stories to excite our intelligence and emotions. Only a film festival can achieve such journeys. Only a film festival can provide the opportunity to compare and marvel at the cultural and existential dierences across our world. Flowing through the festival are 4 strands: Bergman, political intrigue, women’s fight for justice and once again a great introduction to French cinema. he festival hopes you will come back again and again to enjoy the Thallucinatory magic of cinema. Lady Cotton President of the Purbeck Film Festival About the Purbeck Film Festival upported by the BFI and its S South West Regional Hub the Purbeck Film Festival has, in its Jean Dixon 22 years, continued to grow in terms of venues and audience numbers. Its primary aim is to provide a rich variety of cinematic experience across a rural area which does not have easy access to foreign language, independent and classic films. It provides a perfect opportunity to compare and contrast stories and styles across a wide range of films. Such a metropolitan approach to film screenings offers the chance to increase our knowledge and literacy of the cinema. It is important to stress that the festival operates throughout the year offering screenings for charity events and big open air occasions at Studland, Corfe Castle and Swanage. 2 See page 46 for A-Z of Films FESTIVAL FUNDERS & SPONSORS Purbeck Film Festival gratefully acknowledges support towards the festival from the following: MAIN SPONSORS With the support of BFI Film Festival Fund, awarding funds from the National Lottery Welcoming our new corporate sponsor - Animal Born in British waters in 1987, Animal has taken inspiration from its board sports heritage to become a leading lifestyle brand. With 14 special guests made up of directors, producers, writers and animators, festival audiences can enjoy in-depth interviews with these contemporary film professionals. Opening with the unmissable film The Wife, starring Glenn Close delivering an Oscar-worthy performance, the festival concludes with the sparkling directorial debut from Mayasaloun Hamoud, In Between. Running through the festival are themes of Bergman, political intrigue and a great introduction to French cinema. Saturday 13th Wednesday 24th The Wife p9 In Between p45 Political Corruption and Deceit In an age of fake news, narcissistic political leadership, attacks on democratic voting procedures and European political instability, the PFF has decided to screen a few of the most famous films dealing with political corruption and deceit. Hands Over the City and its blistering attack on municipal corruption in Naples (24th), All the King’s Men and its exposé of corrupt politicians in America (20th), All the President’s Men and its journalistic investigations into presidential duplicity (23rd), I… as in Icarus and its dark conspiracy (24th), The Conversation and its depictions of surveillance and paranoia (16th). Democratic politics is intricate and occasionally unwieldy: an operation which needs constant scrutiny and eternal vigilance. What role film plays in that process is open to much discussion. However, the messages that these films suggest are universal. Tuesday 23rd, The RexAll The President’s Men p35 See page 4 for more information on Ticket Sales 5 A Short History of French Cinema France has the best claim of all nations to be the birthplace of Cinema. The Lumière Brothers, late in 1895, exhibited ‘The Arrival of a Train at Chiocat Station’ and other short fi lms to a rapt, fee-paying audience in what is now generally regarded as the birth of Cinema. We have included a series of French fi lms and we hope to show the huge diversity that exists in French cinema, the preface of which is A Journey through French Cinema Sunday 14th at the Rex. Other French o erings include Anything for Her (Pour Elle) and The Hole (Le Trou). Also 120 BPM, The Truth (La Vérité) Faces Places (Visages Villages) and I...as in Icarus. The French Government continues to support the French fi lm industry (with policies such as VAT reductions on cinema tickets) in ways UK cinema could only dream of. Vivre le di erence! If one of his lead characters (played by himself) wants to treat a new girlfriend, for example, it will be to join the queue at a New York rerun theatre for a Bergman fi lm. The point being made is a humble genufl ection in his hero’s direction, assuring us, in e ect – you might think this (Allen’s) fi lm is half decent – it won’t be a patch on anything by the Swedish master.

  • Prehistoric 'Sea Dragon' Discovered on English Channel Coast Is Identified As New Species 9 December 2020
Prehistoric 'sea dragon' discovered on English Channel Coast is identified as new species 9 December 2020 with all other Late Jurassic ichthyosaurs to make certain our instincts were correct. It was very exciting to not be able to find a match." The specimen, estimated to have been about 6 feet long, was discovered in 2009 by fossil collector Steve Etches MBE after a cliff crumbled along the seaside. He found it encased in a slab that would originally have been buried 300 feet deep in a limestone seafloor layer. The specimen since has been housed in The Etches Collection Museum of Jurassic Marine Life in Kimmeridge, Dorset. Jacobs named it Thalassodraco etchesi, meaning "Etches sea dragon" after Etches. Illustration of Thalassodraco etchesi. Credit: Megan Jacobs "Now that the new sea dragon has been officially named, it's time to investigate its biology," said study co-author David Martill, Ph.D., professor of paleontology at the University of Portsmouth in A mysterious small marine reptile dating from 150 Portsmouth, United Kingdom. "There are a number million years ago has been identified as a new of things that make this animal special." species that may have been capable of diving very deeply. The well-preserved specimen was found in Investigating the Differences a Late Jurassic deep marine deposit along the English Channel coastline in Dorset, England. "This animal was obviously doing something different compared to other ichthyosaurs. One idea The aquatic reptile has been determined to be part is that it could be a deep diving species, like sperm of the group known as ichthyosaurs, which were whales," Jacobs said.

WUnderstandably captured as we are by local and national issues, and governed by the routines of everyday life, it is important to appreciate constantly other concerns and other voices operating in our world. Cinema is a very eff ective medium for just such a need. To paraphrase the British Film Institute, an organisation to which we are indebted for support every year, we need to listen and learn from the other voices which fl ow from the diverse range of British and international fi lm making past, present and future. From New Zealand to Sweden and from Japan to Brazil, 24 countries are represented in the festival. They provide a wonderfully enjoyable way of encountering the world and its variety of human experiences. From the light hearted (Dough) to the deadly serious (Eye In The Sky), from the female perspective (Aquarius), to the black experience (I Am Not Your Negro), from the classic (La Strada) to the contemporary (My Life As A Courgette), the Festival aims to satisfy as many desires as possible and as many issues as practical. I hope you will all enjoy what you see and hear and continue to support this great event. We look forward to seeing you.

Joanne is hired to prepare Libby for starting school and recommends teaching a mix of sign language and lip reading. Libby’s mother (Suzanne), who is confident Libby can do fine with just lip reading, begins to realise that her daughter is learning and using a language that she and the rest of the family cannot understand.
