Political Corruption and Deceit In an age of fake news, narcissistic political leadership, attacks on democratic voting procedures and European political instability, the PFF has decided to screen a few of the most famous films dealing with political corruption and deceit. Hands Over the City and its blistering attack on municipal corruption in Naples (24th), All the King’s Men and its exposé of corrupt politicians in America (20th), All the President’s Men and its journalistic investigations into presidential duplicity (23rd), I… as in Icarus and its dark conspiracy (24th), The Conversation and its depictions of surveillance and paranoia (16th). Democratic politics is intricate and occasionally unwieldy: an operation which needs constant scrutiny and eternal vigilance. What role film plays in that process is open to much discussion. However, the messages that these films suggest are universal.

France has the best claim of all nations to be the birthplace of Cinema. The Lumière Brothers, late in 1895, exhibited ‘The Arrival of a Train at Chiocat Station’ and other short fi lms to a rapt, fee-paying audience in what is now generally regarded as the birth of Cinema.

We have included a series of French fi lms and we hope to show the huge diversity that exists in French cinema, the preface of which is A Journey through French Cinema Sunday 14th at the Rex. Other French oˆ erings include Anything for Her (Pour Elle) and The Hole (Le Trou). Also 120 BPM, The Truth (La Vérité) Faces Places (Visages Villages) and I...as in Icarus. The French Government continues to support the French fi lm industry (with policies such as VAT reductions on cinema tickets) in ways UK cinema could only dream of. Vivre le di erence! 6 See page 46 for A-Z of Films Celebrating 100 Years of Ingmar Bergman The master fi lmmaker who would have been a hundred this year, described the nature of fi lm thus - ‘No Art passes our conscience in the way that fi lm does and goes directly to our feelings deep down into the dark room of our souls.’ No one has done more to keep the name of Ingmar Bergman in the cinema audience’s consciousness than the American fi lm-maker, Woody Allen. If one of his lead characters (played by himself) wants to treat a new girlfriend, for example, it will be to join the queue at a New York rerun theatre for a Bergman fi lm. The point being made is a humble genufl ection in his hero’s direction, assuring us, in eˆ ect – you might think this (Allen’s) fi lm is half decent – it won’t be a patch on anything by the Swedish master. I was in a very hot Brisbane a year ago and had no intention whatsoever of spending any time indoors. Then I discovered that the city’s modern art gallery was holding a retrospective of thirty or so Bergman fi lms, spanning the near sixty years of his career. From ‘Summer with Monika’ to ‘Winter Light’ - performances every afternoon and evening for a fortnight. Entry was free. Film after magnifi cent fi lm from forty, fi fty, sixty years ago, many I had seen before, no matter, all as fresh as paint. I thought I’d gone to heaven. David Holman

F Rated Films

The BFI have produced research which shows that only 7% of the top 250 fi lms in 2016 were directed by women. In terms of the roles of director, producer, writer, executive producer, cinematographer and editor, only 20% were women and 25% of all fi lms had no women at all in any of these roles. F rated fi lms have either a woman director or writer or both. IMDb has adopted the use of F ratings, along with over 60 fi lm festivals. The Breadwinner, Eric Clapton’s Life in 12 Bars, Mountain, Selma and The Party are all great examples of the F rated category.

With no legal means left to him, how far will he go? Compelling. Great performances by both Vincent Lindon (Julien) and Diane Kruger (Lisa).(Dir. Fred Cavayé, France, 2008, Subtitles, 1 hr 36 mins) Sue and dave Powell PATRONS’ CHOICE

The Hole (Le Trou) Not rated The Rex Cinema BH20 4JX 8.15pm | £7.00; £5.50 students & under 25s 2nd film of the ‘French Escape’ evening at the Rex. In Paris’s La Santé Prison four long term hardened inmates plan an elaborate SUBTITLES escape, cautiously inducting a new inmate to join them. Tough and stern, they use ordinary objects in wonderfully innovative ways to dig their way out via the sewer system. Jacques Becker’s 1960 masterpiece Le Trou, one of the most gripping of all French films, catalogues the methodical way this group of terse, no-nonsense prisoners goes about their daring task. (Dir. Jacques Becker, France, 1960, Subtitles, 2 hrs 11 mins) Tickets www.purbeckfilm.com, the PFF Box o—ce at the Rex Cinema or Jazz Café 01202 708 346 Info Bar available.

7.30pm | £7.00; £6.00 students & under 25s (includes parking) A stellar British cast (Scott Thomas, Spall, Mortimer and Murphy) plus the wonderful American, Patricia Clarkson (stellar in The Station Agent) and Sponsored by Europe’s own garlanded Bruno Ganz, join director Sally Potter in what Mark Kermode, in making this his ‘film of the week’, enthusiastically called ‘the dinner bash from hell.’ A short sharp satire of love, politics and burnt vol-au-vents in which no one comes away unscathed. (Dir. Sally Potter, UK, 2017, 1 hr 11 mins)

Introduced by special guest stand-up comedian Jessica Fostekew. Jess will be talking about how comedy changes, or not, within an ever changing world. Jess’s talk will be preceded by a comedy short film. Jess has extensive experience as comedian, actor and writer in film, radio and theatre. At present she is touring with her sell-out show ‘The Silence of The Nans’. She regularly co-hosts ‘The Guilty Feminist’ and hosts BBC R4 Extra’s ‘The Comedy Club’ as well as her own highly recommended podcast ‘Hoovering’. OOD& F artist. It is well performed by F I L M Hawke, who taps into a certain neediness, junky jitteriness and loneliness. Carmen Ejogo does well as his wife. It’s a strange and stylish film, immediately finding its own weird groove and brazenly committing to it. It’s anchored by two immensely watchable lead performances, and pulls oˆ the vital, too-rare biopic trick of shedding sense on an entire life while only showing slivers of it. (Dir. SUBTITLES characters of writer director Götz Spielmann’s intoxicating thriller in which blame, guilt, revenge and retribution are the themes. Brilliantly conceived and executed, one of the wonderful things about the film is that we are constantly surprised. I love the fact that the story is not what we expect, nor are the angles and the perspectives. We are introduced to the characters in snapshots and slowly we become privy to the way they intersect. Beguiling storytelling keeps us engaged from the first frame; the full implications keep unravelling until the very last. (Dir. OD& this background that Florence and Edward FO start their doomed honeymoon in a very F I L M English hotel on Chesil Beach. The 1960s are beautifully evoked with Florence and Edward coming from very diˆering families. The director Dominic Cooke has, until recently, been known mainly as a theatre director. In a film that is entirely character driven Cooke’s theatre skills are evident. This is a sad and beautiful film that accurately reflects its source. (Dir. “If nothing saves us from death, at least SUBTITLES love should save us from life.” Neruda.
