WUnderstandably captured as we are by local and national issues, and governed by the routines of everyday life, it is important to appreciate constantly other concerns and other voices operating in our world. Cinema is a very eff ective medium for just such a need. To paraphrase the British Film Institute, an organisation to which we are indebted for support every year, we need to listen and learn from the other voices which fl ow from the diverse range of British and international fi lm making past, present and future. From New Zealand to Sweden and from Japan to Brazil, 24 countries are represented in the festival. They provide a wonderfully enjoyable way of encountering the world and its variety of human experiences. From the light hearted (Dough) to the deadly serious (Eye In The Sky), from the female perspective (Aquarius), to the black experience (I Am Not Your Negro), from the classic (La Strada) to the contemporary (My Life As A Courgette), the Festival aims to satisfy as many desires as possible and as many issues as practical. I hope you will all enjoy what you see and hear and continue to support this great event. We look forward to seeing you. Lady Cotton President of the Purbeck Film Festival About the Purbeck Film Festival and the Purbeck Film Charitable Trust urbeck Film Charitable Trust is a non-profi t organisation and P registered Charity. The Trust now runs the Purbeck Film Festival and the Rex Cinema, both as community ventures. Each year the number of venues has increased and in 2017, 21 years later, the number of venues is over 30 including village halls, pubs, restaurants, hotels, arts centres, castles and importantly the Rex Cinema, Wareham, The Lighthouse Arts Centre Poole and Durlston Castle, Swanage. The fi rst Festival President was Sir Bill Cotton, Head of Light Entertainment at the BBC, and upon his death, Lady Cotton kindly took over his role. The aim of the Festival is to bring fi lms to areas of rural Dorset ill served by access to cinemas, often in the form of memorable Jean Dixon community events such as the outdoor screenings at Corfe Castle and on Studland Beach. It also aims to expand audience choice by screening arthouse, classic, independent and foreign language fi lms in a wide and often quirky range of venues. Purbeck Film Festival also runs an international short fi lm competition which encourages young directors to submit their work to a panel of judges. Currently, the competition receives entries from all over the world. The actor and Rex President Edward Fox has commented “You won’t see fi lms like this outside London”, a view perhaps shared by the BFI, who support and endorse the Festival. The Festival audience numbers are growing annually and with the generous support of Dame Maggie Smith last year are set to rise even more. The Purbeck Film Festival continues to serve its original and important role and is now a member of the South West and West Midlands BFI Regional Hub which supports the promotion of British specialised and independent fi lm. 2 See page 46 for A-Z of Films FESTIVAL FUNDERS & SPONSORS Purbeck Film Festival gratefully acknowledges support towards the festival from the following: MAIN SPONSORS With the support of BFI Film Festival Fund, awarding funds from the National Lottery WE ARE ALSO EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT OF Parish Council of Wareham St Martin // Parish Council of East Stoke Lytchett Matravers Parish Council // Wareham Town Council GRATEFUL THANKS TO marqueeprint Island Cottage Holidays Edward Fox & Joanna David // Mark Cosgrove // Katie Lennox Stephen Woolley // Pam & Jean Photography // Poole Library Service Wareham Library // Norman Hayward // Five and Dime Café PATRONS Lady Cotton // Laurence & Alison Gloyn-Cox // James & Jane Kessler // Karen Wright Lida & Gordon Mutton // Sarah Speakman-Jones & Lee Jones // Sarah & John Wootton Thank you to the following for use of their venues The newly redesigned Purbeck Film Festival website now allows you to search your fi lm by date, genre, rating, language and name. This short mission statement from the British Film Institute (BFI) perfectly describes Purbeck Film Festival’s 2017 programme. It is so very important that as many voices get heard in our world and cinema is a very eff ective medium for doing just that. Given the size and economic power of the US it is small wonder that Hollywood and American cinema dominates the British fi lm distribution industry. Couple this with the under-representation of women and ethnic groups in key production jobs and thematic content we arrive at a national cinema which is not fully representative. Saturday 14th Frantz p9 Saturday 28th Aquarius p44 The Purbeck Film Festival has always tried to bring the best of cinematic art to the people of Dorset. Across festival venues, fi lms from over 20 countries are screened. The Rex opens its programme with Frantz, Francoise Ozon’s exquisitely drawn love story and meditation on forgiveness and renewal after WWI. The last Saturday screens the highly acclaimed Brazilian fi lm Aquarius. It’s immersive quality draws you and its last images are indelible. STEPHEN WOOLLEY f all the many tasks involved in fi lm-making, Operhaps the most diffi cult to fathom is the work of a fi lm producer. From discovering the story, engaging the director, raising money and coordinating production and post-production, the role of the producer is arguably the most important. The Purbeck Film Festival is delighted to welcome Stephen Woolley, one of Britain’s fi nest producers, for the closing screening of Their Finest on Sunday 29th October (see p45). Stephen’s fi lm production CV embraces Mona Lisa, Interview with a Vampire, Made In Dagenham, The Company of Wolves, Michael Collins, The End of the Aff air, Back Beat, Scandal, The Crying Game, Carol and many more. At present he is working on two fi lms: On Chesil Beach and Colette and Stephen’s most recent production The Limehouse Golem, starring Bill Nighy, Olivia Cooke and Douglas Booth, is being released on September 1st in the UK. It will be a golden opportunity for anybody interested in fi lm, particularly British fi lm, to listen to discussions and ask questions about the workings of the industry, the work of the fi lm producer and Stephen Woolley’s eventful career. He is a man of unshakeable optimism, which is perhaps, the key ingredient of success in movie making.
