Zoological Studies 48(2): 141-150. Bee flies (Diptera: Bombyliidae) are ectoparasitoids of larval stages of insects, often digger bees and wasps. We studied the behavior of 4 species of the genus Bombylius at a nest aggregation of their host bee, Lasioglossum malachurum Kirby, and at an adjacent feeding site. Although eggs were frequently thrown on vegetation patches, the number of eggs oviposited and the time spent in hovering flight were higher at host nest entrances. Bombylius females fed essentially on 3 (2 Caryophyllaceae and 1 Asteraceae) of 9 blooming plant species found in the area. Oviposition and feeding activities had different daily distributions. In general agreement with optimal foraging theories, Bombylius females exhibited the strongest interest in the predicted target, i.e., the host nest, and fed essentially on a few but highly exploited plants in the close vicinity of the host nesting site. http://zoolstud.sinica.edu.tw/Journals/48.2/141.pdf Key words: Bee fly, Parasitoid, Nectar feeding, Host searching, Halictidae. Biodiversitas 19: 2147-2156. A checklist of Bombyliidae (Diptera) of Republic of Mordovia (Russia) is provided, based on material collected from 2008 to 2017. One hundred ninety specimens from 75 localities were collected. Fourteen of the twenty species are listed as belonging to the fauna for the first time. Intraspecific variation and sexual dimorphism in the wing shape of three species of the genus Bombylius Linnaeus, 1758 were investigated using geometric morphometric techniques. The analysis revealed that wing shape is a good discriminator of the species. In addition, significant sexual dimorphism were found: females of two of the three species had larger wings than males. The sex shape differences consisted mainly of сhanges in the placement of the CuA and A1, while interspecific wing shape variation distributed in more dimensions. There was no evidence for allometric relationships relating to sexual dimorphism and interspecific variation. Potential adaptive significance of interspecific and intersex variation in wing size and shape is discussed. -

Grazing by livestock is an appropriate management for lowland heathland, to deliver conservation objectives. b. Management regimes using appropriate grazing can produce a greater diversity of habitats and thus a greater biological diversity than other management types such as burning or cutting. c. Grazing impacts must always be considered in terms of the intensity of grazing and the livestock types used; negative effects, or poor achievement of targets can arise from inappropriate grazing. The negative impacts of grazing on biodiversity over much of upland heathland in Britain illustrates the consequences of overgrazing. Summary 1. In recent years, grazing has been reintroduced to many UK (and European) lowland heaths, in an attempt to provide appropriate, sustainable conservation management. 2. To provide information to guide the use of livestock grazing on lowland heathlands, this report has the following objectives. a. To review and synthesise information on lowland heathland grazing history, methods and impacts. b. To obtain this information from published and unpublished literature, observation and anecdote from site managers, and ongoing research. -

WILDLIFE DIARY AND NEWS FOR DEC 22 - 28 (WEEK 52 OF 2013) Sun 29 Dec Possible Blue Fleabane, clearly seen Bearded Tits and maybe a Marsh Harrier. Sunshine and a light wind this morning suggested a cycle ride to have a second look at the plant which I discovered last Friday and thought might be Blue Fleabane (though it looked quite different to the plants that can be seen beside the cycleway between Broadmarsh and Farlington Marshes). After riding through the A27 underpass I continued until I was near the barrier at the Emsworth end of the area and parked my bike against the last lampost on the north side of the old road, then walked back a few yards to find the plant in the roadside grass close to the kerb and take a couple of photos shown below. Two views of what may be a hybrid of Blue Fleabane at the Warblington A27 underpass Although these photos are not very good they remind me of what I think are the significant features of the plant for its eventual identification. The plant was only around 12cm tall and consisted of a number of fresh shoots bearing the leaves and flowers that had initially attracted my attention, all growing from a stout wooden stem of what I assume to have been a plant growing there earlier in the year but cut down during mowing of the roadside grass, causing fresh growth of multiple shoots rather than the single upright stem I would expect of a plant growing naturally from seed.
