SOCKERS STORYLINES U.S. SOCCER ICON LANDON DONOVAN JOINS THE SOCKERS

The San Diego Sockers signed U.S. Soccer icon Landon Donovan for the remainder of the 2018-19 MASL season. He was introduced at a press conference on January 24. Donovan will make his debut with the San Diego Sockers at home when they face off against the on February 15, 2019 at 7:35 pm PT.

Donovan joins the Sockers after a brief stint with Mexico’s Club León. Prior to that, he played 14 seasons in the MLS with both LA Galaxy and , during which time he won 6 MLS Cups and became the league’s all-time top scorer. Donovan has also made 157 appearances with the US Men’s National Team and is the highest scoring male soccer player in US World Cup History. With the acquisition of Donovan, MASL marks yet another high caliber signing and continues to establish its reputation as a competitive force within US soccer landscape. The MASL now boasts 17 teams across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Landon Donovan is not only a world class player, but he’s also been a big ambassador for the sport of soccer in San Diego. We’re thrilled that he’s decided to join our squad and continue his mission to make San Diego a top soccer city,” says San Diego Sockers owner Phil Salvagio.

ESCOTO NAMED MASL'S JANUARY PLAYER OF THE MONTH The MASL named Brandon Escoto as the January Player of the Month. In his third season with San Diego, Escoto led the team with 10 goals and 6 assists for 16 total points in January. This includes the game-winning overtime goal against the on January 5. Escoto helped the Sockers go 6-0 for the month and 10-1 overall for the season.

ROAD WARRIORS The Sockers are 6-0 on the road this season with wins over Ontario (2), Dallas, Monterrey, Turlock and Tacoma. San Diego's wins over the Fury and Flash were important even this early in the season for possible playoff positioning. Last year, San Diego had to travel to Mexico for the Western Conference Final after losing to Monterrey in the regular season.

CELEBRATING OUR 40th ANNIVERSARY The Sockers are celebrating their 40th anniversary this season. "Legacy of Champions Since 1978" is the slogan to be used during the marketing campaign which features a wide variety of online, game day, apparel and promo giveaway elements. The circular anniversary logo with a ribbon near the bottom incorporates elements from the team's history. The team will wear the iconic 1980s MISL era retro jerseys on January 11 and April 7.

SOCKERS INFUSED WITH NEW TALENT THIS SEASON San Diego had a busy off-season acquiring eight new players via trade or free agency for the 2018-19 season. Taylor Walter Bond (F - Tacoma - FA), Leo De Oliveira (F-Ontario - Trade), Jose Gonzalez (D- Ontario - Trade), Christian Gutierrez (M - El Paso - FA), Guerrero Pino (D - Kansas City - Trade) (photo), Travis Pittman (M - FA), Manuel Rojo (D - El Paso- FA) and Christian Segura (M - Sonora - FA). The latest move was a four-player trade with rival Ontario on November 14. San Diego received De Oliveira and Gonzalez in exchange for GK Chris Toth and F Andy Lorei.

HONORING The San Diego Sockers family was deeply saddened by the loss of Ron Newman, a legendary figure both on and off the soccer field, and remembered specifically as the most successful and innovative head coach in indoor soccer history. He passed away on August 27, 2018 at the age of 84. The organization honored him with a pregame ceremony on December 16. The team will also wear black armbands with the initials "RN" and a gold with the number 10 inside.

SOCKERS COACHING STAFF PHIL SALVAGIO - HEAD COACH Born in New York, but raised in Florida, Phil attended Nova University in Fort Lauderdale where he earned his degree in Accounting. Before settling down in the insurance industry, Phil was drafted to play professional soccer in in 1993. After two years as the San Diego Sockers’ goalie, Phil turned in his jersey for a suit and started his career in the insurance industry in 1997. When colleagues and friends David Pike and Carl Savoia purchased the Sockers in August of 2008, Salvagio was named Sockers head coach. In five seasons Phil guided the Sockers to a 72-10 PASL regular season record and four consecutive championships from 2009-13, earning Coach of the Year honors in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

RENE ORTIZ - ASSISTANT COACH Rene returns for his second season as an assistant coach. The Anaheim native signed with the Sockers at the age of 17 in 1987. As a member of the Sockers Reserves, he won the Mitre National Amateur Championship and was named the Tournament MVP. Ortiz made the senior squad and won three consecutive MISL titles. He played four years with the NPSL's . He returned to San Diego to play three more years. In 1996, Rene was drafted by the MLS' Dallas Burn and played two outdoor seasons with the club. He finished his career indoors in 2000 after playing for five more teams in various leagues. After retiring, he obtained his USSF "B" coaching license and
