A detailed description, distribution data, along with a color plate and a line drawing are provided. In China, specimens representing this species were formerly misidentified asA. multiflorus or A. hong- kongensis (= A. blumei). Artabotrys blumei typically has a single flower per inflorescence, whereas both Artabotrys pachypetalus and A. multiflorus have multiple flowers per inflorescence. -

The taxonomy and distribution of Pacifi c Annonaceae are reviewed in light of recent changes in generic delimitations. A new species of the genus Monoon from the Solomon Archipelago is described, Monoon salomonicum I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov., together with an apparently related new species from New Guinea, Monoon pachypetalum I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov. The confi rmed presence of the genus in the Solomon Islands extends the generic range eastward beyond New Guinea. Two new species of Huberantha are described, Huberantha asymmetrica I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov. and Huberantha whistleri I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov., from the Solomon Islands and Samoa respectively. New combinations are proposed: Drepananthus novoguineensis (Baker f.) I.M.Turner & Utteridge comb. -

Annonaceae is a major pantropical plant family with 109 genera and ca. 2450 species, occurring across all major and minor tropical forests of the world. Baits were designed by sequencing the transcriptomes of five species from two of the largest Annonaceae subfamilies. Orthologous loci were identified. The resulting baiting kit was used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships at two different levels using concatenated and gene tree approaches: a family wide Annonaceae analysis sampling 65 genera and a species level analysis of tribe Piptostigmateae sampling 29 species with multiple individuals per species. -

F., THE FLORA OF BRITISH INDIA: VOLUME-I * M. ENAMUR RASHID AND M. ATIQUR RAHMAN Department of Botany, University of Chittagong, Chittagong 4331, Bangladesh Keywords: J.D. Hooker; Flora of British India; Bangladesh; Nomenclature; Taxonomic status. Abstract Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker in his first volume of the Flora of British India includeed a total of 2460 species in 452 genera under 44 natural orders (= families) of which a total of 226 species in 114 genera under 33 natural orders were from the area now in Bangladesh. These taxa are listed with their updated nomenclature and taxonomic status as per ICBN following Cronquist’s system of plant classification. The current number recognized, so far, are 220 species in 131 genera under 44 families. The recorded area in Bangladesh and the name of specimen’s collector, as in Hook.f., are also provided. Introduction J.D. Hooker compiled his first volume of the “Flora of British India” with three parts published in 3 different dates. Each part includes a number of natural orders. Part I includes the natural order Ranunculaceae to Polygaleae while Part II includes Frankeniaceae to Geraniaceae and Part III includes Rutaceae to Sapindaceae. Hooker was assisted by various botanists in describing the taxa of 44 natural orders of this volume. Altogether 10 contributors including J.D. Hooker were involved in this volume. Publication details along with number of cotributors and distribution of taxa of 3 parts of this volume are mentioned in Table 1. -

Saw, KEP), whereas for the Pteridaceae we are trying to raise funds to set up a team (Dr. M. Zink and Mr. H. Schneider [Z] and Dr. Aziz Bidin [UKMB]). Annonaceae. Dr. K. Mat-Salleh (UKMB) is studying Cyathocalyx, Drepananthus, Enicosanthum, Goniothalamus, Marsypopetalum, Mitrephora, Neouvaria, Woodiellantha, and Xylopia for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak. Leeuwenberg will monograph Cerbera (5 spp), Chilocarpus (15), Leuconotis (7), and Melodinus (45), and revise the Malesian species of Hunteria (1), Lepiniopsis (1), Ochrosia He (incl. Neisosperma, 12), and Rauvolfia (8). will work up the text for the Flora using existing monographs of his own of Tabernaemontana, Voacanga, and Lorence & Wagner's of Lepinia. F.I. van Nek (WAG) has started a monograph of Carissa for Africa, but may do the Asian ones as well. Dr. L.G. Saw (KEP) will study Kopsia for N. Borneo and revise the family for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak. Sidiyasa is monographing Alstonia for his Ph.D. Y.-P. Yang (KUN) will come to WAG in January 1995 to monograph 4 genera present in China, at least the first and last one have some representatives in Malesia: Epigynum (10), Parepigynum (1), Sindechites (2), and Trachelospermum (15). -

CHAPTER 4 PALYNOLOGY STUDIES OF TRIBE MITREPHOREAE (ANNONACEAE) IN THAILAND 4.1 INTRODUCTION Annonaceae are a pantropical family of, shrub trees and lianas. The family consists of about 130 genera and 2300 species. The largest number of genera and species are known from Asia (including Australia and the Pacific (Mols & Keßler, 2003). Based on the morphological characters, the infrafamilial classification of the family Annonaceae has been done in different ways by different botanists in the past. They are summarized below. Bentham and Hooker (1862) classified the Annonaceae into five tribes (Uvarieae, Unonieae, Miliuseae, Mitrephoreae and Xylopieae) based on the aestivation of calyx and corolla and the structure of the stamen connective. In their classification members were group into the tribe Mitrephoreae are Goniothalmus, Mitrephora, Pseuduvaria, Friesodielsia, Orophea, Popowia and Neo – uvaria by the character of inner petals curving over the sexual organs forming a dome – shape (mitreform structure). Ridley (1922) studied Annonaceae in the Malay Peninsular. He placed the genera of Annonaceae into six tribes (Uvarieae, Unonieae, Miliuseae, Mitrephoreae, Annonieae and Xylopieae) and the genera which were classified into the Tribe Mitrephoreae by the character of inner petals arching over the sexual organs and forming a dome, are Goniothalamus, Orophea, Oxymitra, Mitrephora and Popowia. Sinclair’s (1955) revision of the Malayan Annonaceae, classified them into 6 tribes like Ridley (1922). The members of tribe Mitrephoreae were placed with 2 additional genera, Pseuduvaria and Neo - uvaria but Orophea was transferred into the tribe Miliuseae. It was noted that while Orophea fits the circumscription of the tribe Mitrephoreae by virtue of the character of its inner petals, some members of this genus also have unusual stamens that associate it with the tribe Miliuseae. -

The Goniothalamus essential oils were recognized to possess considerable biological activities with varied chemical composition. This article aims to overview the medicinal uses, chemical compositions, and biological activities of Malaysian Goniothalamus essential oils considered as a medicinal plants, widely used as traditional herbal medicines in the treatment of various diseases. The data were collected from the scientific electronic databases including SciFinder, Scopus, Elsevier, PubMed and Google Scholar. Ten Goniothalamus species have been reported for their essential oils and biological activities. It can be observed that the major components were α-cadinol, terpinen-4-ol, β-eudesmol, β-selinene, linalool, limonene, α-copaene, 1,8-cineole and β-cubebene. In addition, the selected chemical components from the bark, leaf and root oils were analysed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and were able to cluster in four groups based on relationships and chemical patterns in essential oils. -

Christophe Wiart School of Pharmacy, The University of Nottingham (Malaysia Campus), Jalan Broga, 43500 Semenyih, Selangor, Malaysia Irrespective of the presence of cytotoxic acetogenins and styryl-lactones in the genus Goniothalamus, only 22 species in the genus Goniothalamus, out of 160 species (13.7%) have so far been investigated. In an effort to promote further research on the genus Goniothalamus which could represent a source of drugs for the treatment of cancers and bacterial infections, this work offers a broad analysis of current knowledge on Goniothalamus species. Therefore, it includes (i) taxonomy (ii) botanical description (iii) traditional medicinal uses and (iv) phytochemical and pharmacological studies. We discuss the molecular mechanisms of actions of acetogenins and styryl-lactones, with some emphasis on the possible involvement of protein kinase, Bax and TRAIL receptors in the cytotoxic effects of styryl-lactones. We also report (v) the growth inhibition of several nosocomial bacteria by Goniothalamus. scortechinii. The crude methanol extract of G. scortechinii showed a good and broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. General Note Article is recommended to print as color digital version in recycled paper. ABSTRACT Goniothalamus luzonensis, a new species is herein described and illustrated. The new species is allied to G. dolichopetalus by having similarities on the length of petiole, glabrous leafblade, width of the outer petals and inner petals. However, it is differentiated by having smaller leaves 6–11 × 2–4 cm (vs. 11–20 × 2.5–5 cm), narrowly lanceolate leafblade (vs. lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, rarely oblanceolate), attenuate apex (vs. acuminate), obute base (vs. acute), larger broadly ovate sepals (vs.
