PREFACE

The 2008-2011edition of the Atlanta Metropolitan College (AMC) Fact Book is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of basic information about the College. The Fact Book provides summary information and statistical data concerning the activities of the College, answers the most frequently asked questions pertaining to the College, and can be used as a quick reference tool when seeking data relative to AMC’s internal environment.

This edition of the Atlanta Metropolitan College Fact Book represents data from fall 2008 through fall 2010. However, some data sets reflect trends over a ten-year period—2000-2010-- while others cover a five-year period or provide the latest year’s update. Several new sections have been added to this edition of the Fact Book, including: AMC’s ―Significant Achievements‖, ―About AMC‖, ―Strategic Goals‖, and ―Institutional Advancement Annual Reports‖. It is our hope that these new sections will present a more complete view of the Institution and its on- going activities.

During the 1987-88 academic year, the institution’s name was changed to Atlanta Metropolitan College effective July 1, 1988.

During the 1976-77 academic year, construction of the Central Energy Plant was completed. In 1978-79, two multi-level academic buildings were added: an academic classroom unit and the College Library. A new Health and Physical Education Complex was completed and occupied during the 1991-92 academic year. During the fall 2000 semester, the Student Center was completed. Atlanta Metropolitan College Strategic Goals (2008-2013)

Strategic Goal 1: Increase Capacity and Student Access. AMC must increase and enhance its human resources, physical and fiscal infrastructure, geographical access, course delivery methods, and institutional strategies in order to accommodate this rapidly growing and diverse student population.

Strategic Goal 2: Increase Student Enrollment and Retention Rates. To sustain high retention and graduation rates, and support continuing enrollment increases, Atlanta Metropolitan College must develop creative approaches to the design and implementation of its programs and services.

Strategic Goal 3: Provide an Affordable, High Quality Education for Economically Disadvantaged, Educationally Gifted, and Promising Students. Atlanta Metropolitan College is deeply committed to providing a quality education for both educationally gifted students and students with great promise who are under prepared for the rigors of college work. Given the proper nurturing, supportive, affordable, and educationally motivating environment, Atlanta Metropolitan College can provide these students the opportunity to realize their full personal and professional potential.

Strategic Goal 4: Ensure Effective and Efficient Educational Programs and Academic Services that Meet Student and Market Demands.

To be competitive in the 21st century, Atlanta Metropolitan College must provide relevant educational programs that foster a skill-set that prepares its students for the changing global economy. Quality instructional programs, high academic standards, and a learning-centered environment will ensure AMC graduates are prepared for wither transfer to a four-year college/university or transition to the job market.

Strategic Goal 5: Enhance Customer Service and Student Support Services. Atlanta Metropolitan College must ensure that all services rendered are customer-oriented and that the necessary assessment instruments are in place to continually measure and monitor the level of student satisfaction.

Strategic Goal 6: Develop Outreach Initiatives, Improve Public Awareness and Public Relations. Atlanta Metropolitan College must aggressively strengthen its public relations with the Metro-Atlanta region to make the availability of its programs and services known to the general public.

Strategic Goal 7: Develop Collaborations and Partnerships. Mutually beneficial collaborations and partnerships with other colleges/universities, professional organizations, and businesses will facilitate a synergetic relationship between AMC and its external partners.

Mission

Institutional Advancement is the fundraising, marketing/public relations, and development division of Atlanta Metropolitan College (AMC). The advancement team supports AMC's commitment to academic excellence and excellence in all aspects of its programs and services. We will advance AMC in four ways: 1) provide quality marketing materials to enhance the institution's image; 2) respond in a timely manner to requests for information from the media and the general public; 3) forge partnerships with individual supporters, corporate entities, and civic organizations; and, 4) maintain relationships with the college's alumni.

Annual AMC Alumni Spotlight

Atlanta Metropolitan College awarded Ms. Pamela D. Cross the 2010 Alumni of the Year Award. This award is given to students who show an exceptional commitment to AMC while supporting the College’s efforts to move forward. Cross was recognized during the Sixth Annual Regents’ Awards for Excellence in Education Celebration, as well as at the Annual Alumni Gala.

GOVERNANCE

BOARD OF REGENTS

Atlanta Metropolitan College is a unit of the University System of Georgia (USG) under the governance of the Board of Regents. The Board of Regents is composed of 16 members: five from the state-at-large and one from each of the eleven congressional districts. Members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate to serve seven-year terms of office. The Board establishes policies and procedures under which USG institutions operate. Also, the Board receives all state appropriations for the University System and allocates those resources to the various USG institutions and related agencies.
