Over 16,500 girls have the opportunity to be involved in 18+ sports – in weekly competitions, Carnivals, Focus Days and Saturday Sports for Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels. Participation and friendly competition has been a strong element of the focus with the elite athletes enjoying the extra competition in finals and representative GSV Office teams in the biggest school sporting association in Victoria. 												Queensland Wins 123 ICAS Medals
Media Release 25 February 2021 Queensland Wins 123 ICAS Medals Queensland has won 123 medals in one of the largest global academic competitions for school students – with Brisbane Grammar School topping the State with 10 medals. ICAS competition is a school-based competition that students from Australia and international schools sit annually across six subject areas – English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling Bee, Writing and Digital Technologies. Owned and operated by Australian EdTech, Janison, the prestigious competition is administered in thousands of schools across the globe. Despite COVID’s impact on school education, hundreds-of-thousands of tests were completed in 2020. State by State the medal tally was: NSW-168, QLD-123, SA-94, VIC-91, WA-85, TAS-55, NT-9 and ACT-8. “I congratulate the State’s 123 students who received ICAS medals placing them in the top 0.3% of the 2020 world cohort. This is designed to be a very challenging competition and Australian students have excelled,” said Amy Barouch, Group Executive – ICAS Assessments at Janison. “ICAS goes beyond the classroom curriculum and focuses on deep subject knowledge and higher order skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. For academic students, the competition represents challenge and an opportunity to stretch, and for others it is about the fun and resilience of seeing how far you can go. “Australian students performed remarkably well, demonstrating their resilience amidst a pandemic and also how well placed our students are in terms of global competencies.” Highlights of the Queensland medal tally were: • Brisbane Grammar School students won 10 medals – making the school the highest scoring school in the State. -

CASE STUDY Melbourne Girls Grammar School (MGGS), INTENSE DESIGN THINKING WEEKENDS Berlin 2017 Immersive Design Thinking Challenge NoTosh Team: Ian Stuart, Keimpe de Heer A school trip around Europe is a fantastic opportunity for students, but how can you enhance the adventure with experiences that build confidence and skillsets for the future? At NoTosh’s Berlin lab, a class of Australian teenagers touring Europe mastered the art of creating solutions to real-life problems and then pitched them live to the world over Facebook. Six weeks previously, the NoTosh team had set the students from Melbourne Girls Grammar School (MGGS) a unique challenge as they left Melbourne to embark on a school trip around Europe: to record each and every issue, annoyance, disruption and inconvenience they encountered on their travels. Fast forward to a Saturday morning in Berlin, where the NoTosh team and MGGS students took on the second part of their NoTosh Design Thinking challenge. Based in our flexible and creative space in the fashionable Kreuzberg district of the city, students and Team NoTosh worked together to analyse the information and personal experiences gathered on their trip around the world. Over 36 hours they defined problems they felt worth solving, developed thousands of ideas to solve them, and created working prototypes to pitch to their teachers and potential investors brought in my our team. The students split into five teams, pulling together girls of different ages and stages into a multifaceted team, and created vibrant Project Nests in which to build their ideas, a world away from the traditional classroom setting. -

In a mere 500 years, a tiny fraction of humanity’s long history, science – and the technological advances that have stemmed from it – has completely transformed every part of our lives. The scale of humanity’s scientific transformation in such a short period is so immense it’s hard to grasp. My grandmother was alive when one of the world’s oldest airlines, Qantas, was born. In her lifetime, flight has become as routine as daily roll call. Disease, famine and the toll of manual labour that once ravaged the world’s population have also been dramatically reduced. Science is at the heart of this progress. Given such incredible advancement, it’s tempting to think that science education must be in pretty good shape. Sadly, it isn’t. We could talk about falling PISA rankings, or declining STEM enrolments. But instead, and perhaps more importantly, let’s consider the world to which our students will graduate. A world of “fake news” and “alternative facts”. -
