  • Female Figurines of the Upper Paleolithic
Female Figurines of the Upper Paleolithic HONORS THESIS Presented to the Honors Committee of Texas State University-San Marcos In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For Graduation in the University Honors Program By Karen Diane Jennett San Marcos, Texas May 2008 Abstract Those depictions of the human female figure found in association with Upper Paleolithic cultures commonly called “Venus figurines” are an extremely varied class of artifacts. Hundreds of these figurines have been found across the Eurasian continent from France to Siberia and have been dated to around 25,000 B.C.E. Generally the Venus figurines are thought to be small, stone sculptures of nude women with pronounced sexual characteristics who are either voluptuous or pregnant with no face, arms, or legs. Although some of the figurines can be stereotyped this way, there are numerous overlooked examples with drastically different features. The overwhelming variety and diversity among the figurines themselves is reflected in the theories that have developed about them. Since the late nineteenth century, the meaning and purpose of these Venus figurines have been interpreted over and over again. Some of the theories directly reflect the biased thoughts of their time, some are religious and symbolic, and still others have a narrowed scientific focus and rely upon detailed technological analysis. The variety of both the figurines themselves and their interpretations has been overlooked as an important part of understanding these very old and widespread carvings of women.

  • PDF File of Greek Gods
8 The Gods of Greece and Rome The notion of 'god' is a complex one. What is meant by 'a god'? In modern English, a distinction of a kind is made between God, gods, spirits, ghosts, and demons, and much Judaeo-Christian influence can be felt. Many of the Indo-European peoples developed a rich tradition of epic, heroic tales in which more or less immortal figures play a role, often behaving very like ordinary mortal humans and becoming involved in human affairs. In the same stories we find a variety of nymphs and dryads that are clearly pantheistic nature spirits. The older stories about anthropomorphic gods very similar to people are reflected clearly in Homer's great epics. At the same time, many of the stories told about the gods of Greece seem to derive from legends connected with cultic sites, temples and altars, that were frequently found beside sacred wells or groves of trees. These cultic sites often derived from a feeling that nature is full of invisible semi-divine spirits that need to be placated with offerings. The nymphs and naiads of Classical tradition, the elves and goblins of northern Europe, the fairies of Celtic lore all have much in common. Another religious tradition, mentioned in earlier chapters, is the ancient fertility cult of the Earth Mother and her son who dies and rises from the dead. Finally, certain divinities were associated with ecstatic 'mystery' cults in which the god was believed to take possession of his or her devotees; Dionysius is the most familiar example. There may be a link with some form of Shamanism here.

  • Botticelli Past and Present Ever, the Significant and Continued Debate About the Artist
The recent exhibitions dedicated to Botticelli around the world show, more than and Present Botticelli Past ever, the significant and continued debate about the artist. Botticelli Past and Present engages with this debate. The book comprises four thematic parts, spanning four centuries of Botticelli’s artistic fame and reception from the fifteenth century. Each part comprises a number of essays and includes a short introduction which positions them within the wider scholarly literature on Botticelli. The parts are organised chronologically beginning with discussion of the artist and his working practice in his own time, moving onto the progressive rediscovery of his work from the late eighteenth to the turn of the twentieth century, through to his enduring impact on contemporary art and design. Expertly written by researchers and eminent art historians and richly illustrated throughout, the broad range of essays in this book make a valuable contribution to Botticelli studies. Ana Debenedetti is an art historian specialising in Florentine art, artistic literature and workshop practice in the Renaissance. She is Curator of Paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, responsible for the collections of paintings, drawings, watercolours and miniatures. She has written and published on Renaissance art and Botticelli philosophy. Caroline Elam is a Senior Research Fellow at the Warburg Institute, University of London. She specialises in architecture, art and patronage in the Italian Renaissance and in the reception of early Italian art in the late nineteenth and twentieth century. Past She has held academic positions at the University of Glasgow, King’s College, Cambridge and Westfield College, University of London.

Noting that Picasso had no explicit connections to musical practice himself, the study examines the ways in which music appears in the artistʼs work and critically assesses explanations for its dominance and consistency as a subject in Cubist art.

  • Sandro Botticelli – the Birth of Venus – Analysis
Sandro Botticelli – The Birth of Venus – Analysis Sandro Botticelli, a distinguished Italian painter from the early Renaissance period, has produced many religious as well as pagan art works in his lifetime. The training of Fra Filippo Lippi, another renowned painter, made Botticelli understand the techniques of the art work with perfection. In addition, Botticelli was a draughtsman making it a bit convenient for understand the use of dimensions while painting. Primavera and The Birth of Venus are considered as the masterful achievements of Sandro Botticelli. The Birth of Venus is painted when Botticelli was under the patronage of the Medici family. It is not clear about the exact date or year of the creation of the painting and is generally believed to be done in the 1480s. The artwork was not done with typical oil painting found today but a method known as Tempera has been used. Tempera is a method in which pigments are mixed in binding agents such as egg yolk, casein, honey, etc. It helps the painting to survive for many years. In addition, the painting is done on canvas which is contrary to the time of Botticelli. The use of wood was still prevalent but Sandro Botticelli preferred the use of Canvas for many obvious reasons. The Birth of Venus –References Venus is often considered as the Roman counterpart for the Greek Goddess of sex, fertility and love – Aphrodite. It is for this reason; Sandro Botticelli took The Birth of Venus based on the account present in Theogony of Hesiod [or the stories he might have known based on the account present in Theogony].

Master of Arts In Classics by Alice Jessica Chapman San Francisco, California May 2015 Copyright by Alice Jessica Chapman 2015 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL I certify that I have read Constructing Realism: The Contemporary Gaze in Hellenistic Art and Poetry by Alice Jessica Chapman, and that in my opinion this work meets the criteria for approving a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master of Arts in Classics at San Francisco State University. Alexandra Pappas, Ph. Assistant Professor Michael Anderson Ph.D. Associate Professor CONSTRUCTING REALISM: THE CONTEMPORARY GAZE IN HELLENISTIC ART AND POETRY Alice Jessica Chapman San Francisco, California 2015 This paper explores the relationship between Hellenistic ekphrasis and contemporary sculpture. It posits that Hellenistic artists working in both media used references to Archaic and Classical sources alongside references to contemporary events and situations to turn the gaze of the viewer back onto contemporary society. By orienting the gaze of the viewer in this way, the artist created a deeper understanding of Hellenistic culture and society through a mixing of the old and the new. I certify that the Abstract is a correct representation of the content of this thesis.
