Traill WALTER OF CHATILLON'S PROSIMETRON IN DOMINO CONFIDO (W.3): WHERE AND WHEN WAS IT PERFORMED?* INTRODUCTION Waiter of Chätillon was one of the most gifted Latin poets of the Middle Ages. His epic poem Alexandreis is his best-known work but he is almost equally well known as the author of some of the best satirical verse in Medieval Latin. Despite his fame, however, little is known about his life. We have to depend for the most part on a number of brief biographical sketches or vitae, whose unreliability is signaled by the mutually contradictory information they provide'. A brief synopsis based on that ev- idence follows. Waiter was born in or near Lilie and received an excellent education at Orleans (or Reims) and Paris. He seems to have taught at Laon and later at Chäril- lon-sur-Marne, not far from Reims. He went to Bologna to study law and in 1176, when William of the White Hands, brother-in-law of Louis VII, was appointed arch- bishop of Reims, WaIter was drawn into his literary circle and it was to William that Waiter dedicated his Alexandreis. He was made a canon of Amiens (or Beauvais or Or- leans) and he mayor may not have died of leprosy. -

OAKLEY, M.A. THE church of St. Andrew the Apostle, Rochester, was founded by Ethelbert, King of Kent, as a college for a small number of secular canons under Justus, Bishop of Rochester, in A.D. 604. Very httle is known about the history of this house. It never seems to have had much influence outside its own walls, and though it possessed considerable landed estates, seems to have been relatively small and poor. It also suffered at the hands of the Danes. Bishops Justus, Romanus, Pauhnus and Ithamar were all remarkable men, but after Bishop Putta's transla- tion to Hereford in 676, very Httle is heard of Rochester. Their bishop, Siweard, is not mentioned as having been at Hastings with King Harold as were many of the Saxon bishops and abbots, and the house put up no opposition to William I when he seized their lands and gave them to his half brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, whom he had created Earl of Kent. The chroniclers say that the house was destitute, and that, when Siweard died in 1075, it was barely able to support the five canons on the estabHshment.1 Four years after his conquest of England, Wilham I invited his friend Lanfranc, Prior of Caen and a former monk of Bee in Normandy, to be bis archbishop at Canterbury. Lanfranc's task was specific: to reorganize EngHsh monasticism on the pattern of Bee; to develop a strict cloistered monasticism, but one of a kind that was not entirely cut off by physical barriers from the Hfe of the rest of the church. -

THE CONSTRUCTION OF CHAUCER’S PARDONER Alastair Minnis The corpus of Latin literature on indulgences is vast; much of it has been under-studied, and several of the most significant discussions remain unedited. Albert “the Great” of Cologne, Bonaventure of Bagnorea, Durandus of St. Pourçain, Francesco della Rossa Bartholi, Francis of Meyronnes, John Baconthorpe, John of Dambach, John of Salisbury, Peter Abelard, Peter of Blois, Peter the Chanter, Peter of Poitiers, Peter John Olivi, Peter of la Palud, Peter of Tarantasia, Richard Godmersham, Robert Courson, Senatus of Worcester, Simon of Cremona, Stephen Langton, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas of Chobham, William Lyndwood, William of Auvergne, William of Auxerre....1 Those are just a few among the large number of schol- ars who had important things to say about the theology which under- pinned indulgences, many of the later accounts appearing in commentaries on the fourth book of Peter Lombard’s Sentences (a major locus classicus for relevant discussion). Interest in the topic was international, even as the practice of dispensing indulgences was inter- national. When we seek material on pardons and pardoners in the several national vernaculars, however, an uneven pattern emerges, and some of the pickings are slim. In the Chanson de Roland Bishop Turpin offers Charlemagne’s troops absolution before they battle against the Saracens, so that if they die they will be “holy martyrs,” seated in “highest paradise” (1130–5).2 This statement is illustrative of early thought about how indulgences can ensure safe passage to heaven through martyrdom, and is of interest in relation to the developing theory and practice of crusad- ing indulgences. -

This has led on the one hand to functional approaches that treat the authors as a class subject to sociological analysis, and on the other to approaches that emphasize the fictionality of Minnesang as a form of role- playing in which genre conventions supersede individual contributions. I argue that the men who composed and performed these songs at court were, in fact, using them to create and curate individual profiles for themselves. -

The Dissemination of Visions of the Otherworld in Thirteenth-Century

Abstract This thesis examines the dissemination of visions of the otherworld in the long thirteenth century (c.1150-1321) by analysing the work of one enthusiast for such visions, Helinand of Froidmont, and studying the later transmission of three, contrasting accounts: the vision of the monk of Eynsham (c.1196), the vision of St. Fursa (c.656) and the vision of Gunthelm (s.xiiex). It relies on a close reading and comparison of different versions of these visions as they appear in exempla collections, religious miscellanies, history chronicles and sermons. In considering the process of redaction, it corrects two imbalances in the recent scholarship: a focus on searching for, then discussing ‘authorial’ versions of the narratives and a tendency among students of literature to treat visions of the otherworld as an independent sub-genre, prefiguring Dante’s later masterpiece. Instead, by looking at the different responses of a number of authors and compilers to visions of the otherworld, this thesis shows how they interacted with other elements of religious culture. -

Brodeur Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2015 Abstract Medieval indulgences have long had a troubled public image, grounded in centuries of confessional discord. Were they simply a crass form of medieval religious commercialism and a spiritual fraud, as the reforming archbishop Cranmer charged in his 1543 appeal to raise funds for Henry VIII’s contributions against the Turks? Or were they perceived and used in a different manner? In his influential work, Indulgences in Late Medieval England: Passports to Paradise, R.N. Swanson offered fresh arguments for the centrality and popularity of indulgences in the devotional landscape of medieval England, and thoroughly documented the doctrinal development and administrative apparatus that grew up around indulgences. How they functioned within the English social and devotional landscape, particularly at the local level, is the focus of this thesis. Through an investigation of published episcopal registers, my thesis explores the social impact of indulgences at the diocesan level by examining the context, aims, and social make up of the beneficiaries, as well as the spiritual and social expectations of the granting bishops. It first explores personal indulgences given to benefit individuals, specifically the deserving poor and ransomed captives, before examining indulgences ii given to local institutions, particularly hospitals and parishes. Throughout this study, I show that both lay people and bishops used indulgences to build, reinforce or maintain solidarity and social bonds between diverse groups. -
