Time spent on collecting and fetching water has a direct consequence on their productivity and thus their household income. Use of waterwheels can ease the drudgery of fetching water and also reduce the time spent for the same. Water wheels can be used by any member of the family women, children, and elderly quite easily. It allows collecting and bringing home 5 times more water than a single bucket by simply rolling the water wheel along the ground. The Waterwheel is an device widely accepted in many countries by communities where water is not available within the houses but need to be collected from a distance. It is designed for the use of women and children who are often responsible for water collection in rural communities. Keeping this in view, Habitat for Humanity India with the financial support from Hill Spring Schools had implemented 1361 “water wheel distribution project” fo the tribal famileis living in 3 districts (Nagpur, Yevatmal of Vidharbha region & Nanded of Marathwada region) of Maharashtra. The objective of the project was to distribute 1361 water wheels to families in the selected villages in these districts. This increase the access to adequate water for each house. The project was commenced and completed in a period of 4 months (1st October to 31st January 2020). Availability of potable water in rural areas is strongly interlinked with rural development and growth and displays direct, positive results for human health and well being, especially for women and children. As the burden of obtaining drinking water is shouldered by young girls, easy availability results in better school attendance among girl children. Women tend to benefit from the reduced drudgery and improved quality of life. As per the Department of Drinking Water Supply (DDWS), the drinking water coverage in India is about 84.2 percent but only 12 % of the population has individual household tap connections. The overall situation of India is better in drinking water coverage when compared with the sanitation coverage. However, the quality of drinking water service is poor and most users counted as having access to water receive poor quality water and only on an intermittent basis (Central Statistical Organisation, 2009).The role of water in development is recognized by including it in the Millennium Development Goals. The goal 7C of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is to halve the proportion of the people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. In 2016, India had faced one of its worst droughts in recent memory and official estimates suggest that at least 330 million people were affected by acute shortage of water. In this scenario, fetching water is the biggest challenge in rural India as it compels the women folk to travel kilometres before they can find any. They had to spend lots of time and energy for water collection. Habitat for Humanity India with the financial support from Hill Sping Schools, had addressed this dire need of 1361 families from Vidharbha and Marathwada Region for getting water. Habitat India has not only brought relief into the women’s lives but also has achieved a paradigm shift in the villager’s mindset in fetching water. The men folks also started collecting water with this water wheels.Normally in rural villages, It has been observed that fetching of water is the primary responsibility of women folks. They have to fetch water early in the morning along with their other household chores and some times even after coming back from their labor work in the evening.
