DENVER – Ryan Fitzgerald scored two goals, including the game-winner late in the third period, to push No. 5/5 Boston Col- lege past No. 11/11 Denver, 2-1, Friday night at Magness Arena. The Pioneers (3-2-0) have now dropped two straight games after start- ing 3-0, while the Eagles (4-1-0) have won four straight games. The first period was evenly played and went scoreless with neither team able to generate much offense. Just 28 ticks into the second stanza the Pioneers grabbed the lead as junior defenseman Nolan Zajac scored from the slot, finishing a feed from senior de- fenseman Joey LaLeggia from behind the net. The lead lasted little more than seven minutes as Fitzgerald scored his first goal on the power play, finishing an easy tap-in from Austin Cangelosi, who fed the puck across the crease. DU sophomore netminder Evan Cowley denied the Eagles on a breakaway late in the second stanza to send the game to the final frame knotted at 1-1. The Pioneers had several close calls on the power play, but soon after BC killed a penalty, Zach Sanford carried the puck into the zone and waited for Fitzgerald to arrive at the back post where he redirected Sanford’s feed in the net for the game-winner. DU pulled Cowley for an extra attacker with two minutes to go but was unable to find the equalizer in the 2-1 loss. Denver did outshot the Eagles, 26-22, in the contest, but BC’s Thatcher Demko totaled 25 saves to earn the win in goal. Cowley stopped 20 shots in defeat. Boston College finished 1-for-5 on the power play while Denver failed to score on its six man advantages. The two teams complete their series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. MT.
