I’m sure many of our childhood memories still resonate of projects using throw away items such as empty cardboard boxes, pipe cleaners, plastic bottles and not forgetting sticky back plastic. So, despite the current massive debate of recycling and up cycling, children have been helping by using these kitchen cast-offs for years. We gardeners, too, try to recycle our plant waste on the compost heap (pages 4-5), however the huge issues of one-use plastic and packaging means there is much to do in the future if we are help preserve our fragile planet. At the Garden Centre we observe a strict recycling policy with the re-use of cardboard boxes for carrying purchases from the till, to shredding newspapers and waste paper for packing our mail-order plants. Gardeners often save toilet rolls for germinating beans, peas and sunflower seeds in and I’ve seen a few net curtains utilised over allotment plots to keep out the dreaded cabbage white butterfly or low flying pesky carrot fly.

Career details to March 2014 Peter prepares to present an award to Ant and Dec at the NTV Award Ceremony at the Al bert Hall, ably assisted by Valerie Singleton and John Noakes Peter Purves Freelance TV Presenter Writer, Producer, Director and Presentation Consultant www.peterpurves.net [email protected] Career to Early 2009 Peter is one of Britain’s most experienced TV presenters of “live” magazine programmes, with literally hundreds of credits to his name. He is probably best known for his work on the BBC TV children’s programme, Blue Peter , which he presented for ten and a half years from 1967 to 1978. As part of what is affectionately known as the “Dream Team” (together with Valerie Singleton and John Noakes) he appeared in more than 850 episodes of what has become the longest continuously running children’s TV programme of all-time. His career began in the theatre, in what was known as weekly rep., with the Renaissance Theatre Company, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Barrow-in-Furness. It was a time he remembers with great affection, as the best training, the worst paid, the hardest work and the happiest two working years he has ever known. From the early 1960’s he appeared in many of the then current and popular television series for both the BBC and ITV, and in 1965 he joined the original Doctor Who , William Hartnell for a year as his sidekick in the still popular series. He occasionally attends the conventions held around the world for the show’s aficionados.

Press Release 16 October 2018 Virgin Trains marks 60 years of Blue Peter with train naming • Virgin Trains names one of its flagship Pendolinos ‘Blue Peter’ • Former presenters travel onboard ‘Blue Peter’ en-route to birthday celebrations in Manchester • ‘Blue Peter’ will be seen the length and breadth of the west coast route Virgin Trains has named one of its flagship Pendolinos ‘Blue Peter’ to mark the 60th birthday of the world’s longest running children’s TV show. Former presenters including Peter Purves, Konnie Huq, Janet Ellis, Richard Bacon and Liz Barker all jumped onboard ‘Blue Peter’ today ahead of the special diamond anniversary programme due to be screened on the CBBC channel and again this weekend on BBC2. The train naming continues the show’s longstanding association with the railway. A steam engine also bears the name ‘Blue Peter’ and has been a regular feature on the programme over the years. “We’ve all grown up with Blue Peter,” enthused Gaynor Stewart, General Manager for Virgin Trains in the North West. “We wanted to mark the milestone, especially now the programme is filmed in Manchester. And great to see the smiles on people’s faces when they’ve spotted the nameplate. I am sure it has helped conjured up a lot of memories from the past 60 years.” Fans of the show, and train, will be able to look out for Pendolino ‘Blue Peter’ as it travels up and down the west coast route, clocking up around 350k miles each year on its visits to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh and stations in between.
