TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE MINNESOTA VIKINGS EDITION Minnesota Vikings Team History Over the past quarter-century, the Minnesota Vikings have consistently been at the top of their division. During that same period, only Dallas has made more playoff appearances. In addition, only four teams have played in more Super Bowls than Minnesota, which participated in Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX and XI. The pro football saga in the Twin Cities began in August 1959, when fi ve Minnesota businessmen were awarded a franchise in the new American Football League. Five months later in January 1960, the same ownership group made up of Bill Boyer, Ole Haugsrud, Bernie Ridder, H. P. Skoglund and Max Winter fi rst forfeited its AFL membership and then was awarded the National Football League’s 14th franchise that was to begin play in 1961. Perhaps no team in history ever had a more spectacular debut than did the Minnesota Vikings in their fi rst game ever on September 17, 1961. Rookie Fran Tarkenton made a once-in-a-generation debut when he came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes and run for a fi fth score to lead his Vikings to a 37-13 thrashing of the fabled Chicago Bears. Two-and-a-half decades later in 1986, Tarkenton became the fi rst Vikings player to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 27, No. 6 (2005) Hail Mary on Snopes One of life’s pleasures is dialing up the Snopes Urban Legend site each day. Recently, we were delighted to see them set a football legend straight. Legend: A controversial officiating call led to the death of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton's father. Status: False. Origins: "Do you know what the area code for Buffalo is?" begins a popular joke of the 1990s. "Oh-for-four" (044) is the punchline response, a reference to the city's NFL football team, which went down to defeat in four consecutive Super Bowls from 1991 to 1994. The joke is sardonically funny, but it's also an unfortunate reinforcement of the stigmatization of those who come up just short of first place in the highest levels of athletic competition as "failures." Sure, the Buffalo Bills have never won on Super Sunday and thereby established themselves as champions of the NFL, but that shortfall should not be allowed to obscure the Bills' remarkable achievement: only an extraordinarily talented team could have reached the Super Bowl for four straight years, and nobody but the Bills has ever accomplished that feat. (The Miami Dolphins managed three consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the early 1970s, losing the first and winning the next two.) If there's a bright spot to the Bills' disappointment, it's that they may have pried the monkey off the back of the Minnesota Vikings, another extraordinarily talented team who likewise came up short in four championship games (albeit not in consecutive years).

Carl Eller: Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2004
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 26, No 3 (2004) Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2004 Carl Eller In 1964, Carl Eller, a consensus All-America with the University of Minnesota, was a first-round draft pick of both the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills of the then-rival American Football League. A 6-6, 247-pound defensive stalwart, Eller opted to stay in a familiar environment and signed with the Vikings. For the next 15 years through 1978, he was a fixture in one of pro footballs most effective defensive alignments. He finished his career with one final season with the Seattle Seahawks in 1979, having played in 225 regular season games. During Eller’s career, the Vikings enjoyed great success on the field. Starting in 1968, Eller’s fifth campaign, Minnesota won 10 NFL/NFC Central Division titles in the next 11 seasons. The Vikings won the 1969 NFL championship and NFC crowns in 1973, 1974, and 1976 and played in four Super Bowls. A major factor in this long string of successes was a ferocious defensive line often referred to as “The Purple People Eaters.” Eller was the left end of a line that included Jim Marshall at the opposite end and Hall of Famer Alan Page and Gary Larsen at the tackles. Extremely quick and mobile for his size, Carl was an excellent defender against the run and superb as a pass rusher. In one three-string season from 1975 to 1977, he recorded 44 sacks, according to unofficial statistics (sacks did not become an official NFL statistic until 1982).

Joining the first-year eligible, are eight other modern-era players, a coach and two contributors.
