Kapahaka - Te Ngakau o te Awa has started with practices and Noho in full swing. We are preparing for the regional Manu Korero / Kapaha- ka competitions happening in Opunake on June 27-28, 2019 (Week 9 - Term Two). We have four speakers this year that will be entering the Manu-Kōrero Speech Competitions. There are five positions for Parent Reps of which several current trustees have indicated they won’t be standing for re-election. On Tuesday May 28 Catholic Schools’ Day will be celebrated across New Zealand. This year’s theme is “To extend Christ’s call to love, to be, to do.” Here in Whanganui we will have a Combined Schools’ Mass at the War Memorial Centre at 10am. Parents and friends are most welcome to join us for the Mass.

O’Shea Shield

Last weekend a team of seventeen students attended the annual O’Shea Shield, hosted by St Peter’s College in . We gained our best result ever, coming 6th out of 17 schools. Notable performances came from Christie Wallace (Te Reo Scripture Reading) and Aigalelei Leo (Oratory) who both gained a grade of 6/6; Shannon Hill (Junior Prepared), Neve Duxfield (Scripture Reading), Chloe Tonga-Harrison, Akenese Skelton, Isabelle Schwartfeger, Jayde Hawkes, Te Aio Katene-Wira, Rhiannon Peni (Religious Drama) all gained 5/6. Our debate team, Cameron Daignault, Talitua Leo and Ally Keenan, defeated St Patrick’s College Wellington. Nathaniel Daley stepped up this term to represent us in the Impromptu and our Religious Questions team, Jacob Wylie, Jisna Jaison and Abbey Peters performed admirably with the juniors coming on board at late notice. We look forward to doing even better next year. CONGRATULATIONS On 11th May, Rose Tanner, Nadine Burns and Michael Burns all competed at the St John District Youth competition in Marton. The team Michael is in had many placings on the day as well as 2nd overall at intermediate level. Rose and Nadine as a pair placed 2nd as well as their team of four placing 2nd overall. Their overall placings mean that they will represent Wanga- nui at the Regional competitions held in Napier in Septem- ber. Well done and we look forward to hearing of your progress and achievements with St John.
