14 Editor’s Letter Welcome to the August edition of the Hathersage News, there is still not very much happening in the way of events in the village, so I asked as many people as possible for articles. Thank you to everyone who has written for us, we have pieces on gardening, well dressing, a lovely story about a local cat and many updates from the local societies. The Hathersage Gala went online for the first time because we could not have the usual events. The theme was board games – we had an online pub quiz, online bingo which was great fun, a virtual duck race, and the week was crowned by a murder mystery livestreamed by the Hathersage Players. Well done to everyone who contributed and took part. The winning scarecrows are on the magazine cover – Operation was first and the Ace of Hearts and the Pass the Pigs were joint second. Thank you so much to the many people who commented on the July edition of the magazine and especially to those who took the time to email their feedback, it was all very constructive. We are in the process of forming a working group to discuss the feedback and build on the website and magazine formats so watch this space. We are also in the process of updating the contacts in the magazine, please email the Hathersage News with organisation, name, email address, phone number and any other details. Also I would like to start updating group information on the website, so if you would like to be included online at hathersageonline.com then please send details of your organisation to [email protected] About 300 words in a Word document with one or two photos would be good, and contact details – name, email, website, Facebook group etc if you have any. See you next month. Sarah Spence Editor

Hathersage Memorial Hall Update The Trustees met recently to discuss when the Hall would reopen. It was decided that the Hall would remain closed until September, but would welcome enquiries from would be hirers. Advice is being received and reviewed regularly, so when demand resumes we will be prepared. Safety is obviously most important, so risk assessments will be carried out and procedures will be followed. I'm sure we all hope that things will return to normal as soon as possible. Please get in touch if you have any queries. For bookings enquiries please email [email protected] 15 A New Normality? I daresay lots of us are wondering what life will be like when coronavirus is finally behind us. Certainly, things will be different ... There’s talk of “a new normality”, and we ask what shape it might take. One thing that strikes me is how privileged we are, even to be asking the question. Of course, coronavirus has taken its toll on us, and in so many ways. But there are millions in our world for whom the pandemic continues to be an unspeakable tragedy. For societies with minimal healthcare, fragile economies, poor sanitation, and little possibility of shielding against infection, the darkness is impenetrable. People cling courageously to hope – but how can they even begin to envisage their future? For us, there’s at least some light at the end of the tunnel. We can ask what life might be like. As we ask the question, we can also choose to be part of the answer. In fact, aware of it or not, we will be part of the answer. Naturally, we all look forward to enjoying some of our former freedoms and opportunities. But the experience we’re living through has given us space to reflect. For many, it has given us space to reflect prayer-fully, in God’s presence. The reality of the pandemic, and its global impact on every level, shows how interconnected we are. We’re members of one human family, and we inhabit one shared home. Yes, we’ve nodded our assent to all this before …. but how deeply did it affect our outlook, our attitudes, our priorities, the values we chose to live by? How far did interconnectedness shape our ‘normality’? Are we learning lessons that we can take with us into the future? Are we seeing possible building-blocks for a new normality that will be more inclusive, less polarised, more magnanimous, less self-referential, more respectful of our interconnectedness? What will life be like? It’s a big question. I don’t pretend to know the answer, but I know we’ll all be part of the answer, for better or worse. The pandemic has revealed how fragile and deceptive were the foundations on which many regions iof our world - our own included - had built what we thought would assure our security, prosperity, fulfilment. It’s been a painful discovery, and it has come at a high price. But it offers new opportunities. Are we ready to grasp them? I hope we are. I hope I am. I hope we’ll all have the courage not to go back - but to go forward. I know words can sound rather hollow, but my thoughts and prayers do go out to those of you for whom this has been a time of painful separation from loved ones, or a time of grief at the loss of loved ones. May God bless and comfort you with his presence. And may he bless and take care of you all, you and all those who are dear to you, Father Martin Clayton 16 Hathersage Gala goes ‘Virtual’ Gala 2020 was very different for all of us! Hopefully the programme of events managed to capture some of our usual Gala fun & festivities, while making sure our community stayed safe and well. A few thank you’s … firstly, a massive thank you to The Hathersage Players for their brilliant murder mystery performance. Thanks also to Phil Sproson who helped us get the new website working and hosted our live events; to Paul the magician who gave us a special performance from his garden, filmed expertly by Mike Thompson; to Giacomo Barile for hosting the Virtual Bingo so fantastically; to Martin & Dawn for running the online Pub Quiz and a special thanks to Mill Stone Grit for their fabulous live performance! The current circumstances didn’t quash this village’s creative talents either. We had 38 scarecrows entries - the highest number for some years; some brilliant craft challenge displays and so many fabulous Pet Show Pictures! Thank you everyone for taking part in these and the other events. Clearly much was missing – crowning of the Royals, the well blessing service (have you seen the excellent well dressing video on the website?!) and the Fat Boy’s Bar to name but a few! But we hope that you managed at some point in the week to join in one of the activities in keeping with the gala spirit. Lastly, can I say a big thank you to the brilliant Gala committee who all contributed in ‘keeping the show on the road’. A brilliant team who, every year, go the extra mile to make Gala happen. A special thanks for the team’s creativity & innovation, to Toria for her technological know how and to Rachael for her amazing new look programme design. Thanks guys!! If you would like to give us feedback or join the team for next year please email us at [email protected] Sarah Jones Gala Chair

Colonel Miles Mustard in “Murder at Hathersage Hall”

17 It's been a funny year for gardening… The year started badly for me even before the advent of Covid. Late December 2019 saw me in hospital with sepsis, when I would normally have been ordering seeds and plants. My health problems continued and by the time I was fit enough to think about ordering for the garden, Covid had reared its ugly head. Garden Centres were closed, and I found that the plants and seeds that I wanted were unavailable on line. Fortunately I had seeds left over from previous years. These were sown at the appropriate time and I was pleased to find that most of them still managed to germinate. Everything was well behind where I would normally have expected to be at that time of year. Eventually our local garden centre at Bamford started a home delivery service and I managed to get seed potatoes, onion sets, fertilisers and bags of compost from them. The weather in late April early May was good, so I made sowings of beetroot, French beans, and broad beans. The runner beans that I had grown in the greenhouse were planted out. Due to the hot weather lots of watering was required to keep the young seedlings growing. Shortly after planting the runner beans, gale force winds arrived, whipping off all the young leaves leaving bare stems. (They recovered eventually.) In June the rains came! No more reason to water. The dull coldish weather which arrived with the rain has persisted through into July. Poor plants and veg don’t know what’s going on. Earlier in the year we had two nights of severe frost, this knocked off all the apples from my two small apple trees even though I covered them. So no apples this year! The pear tree managed to hang on to a few fruits. In general the garden has stood up well to the extremes of weather. Even the brown lawn has started to recover from drought and waterlogging. I should have reasonable crops of potatoes, beetroot, broad, French and runner beans. Happy gardening!

18 Hathersage Horticultural Society AGM Literally Zooming through the agenda, Hathersage Horticultural Society held an on-line AGM. President Wendy Ellicock thanked the committee for behind the scenes efforts before handing over to treasurer Chris Eagles for the financial report. Despite good reserves, the society has been operating at a slight loss over the past 5 years but the decision to raise subscription rates by £1 – now deferred to 2022 – should plug this hole for some time to come. The accounts were approved, an auditor appointed and various committee members re-elected. It was also agreed that the abandoned programme of events for the current year should be carried forward to 2021 in its entirety. The date for the next AGM was fixed as March18th 2021. Facebook Flower Show 1 - 7 September We may not be having a Horticultural Show this year but that does not mean we cannot Show Off Our Horticulture! From September 1-7th members of Hathersage Horticultural Society will be invited to take and submit photos of their gardens and allotments, hanging baskets and window boxes and not just flowers but plants, fruit and vegetables grown in the village for display on the society’s Facebook page. A maximum of 5 photos per member please – we don’ t want to break the internet - to be sent to [email protected] for posting on the site so we can all enjoy and celebrate the summer and each other’s gardening successes in a different way. Remember the photos need to be taken during the first week in September and submitted straight away so we get an exact showtime snapshot of the season.

19 Jane Farley’s birthday - May 3rd 2020 When the April edition of the Hathersage News came out, I knew my plans for my 90th birthday celebration were useless: a shame in so many ways, but my admiration and my thanks for the lovely way the plans had been printed. Lockdown was already with us, so I resigned myself to a quiet pleasant day at home. However unbeknownst to me, my immediate neighbours (houses either side and house opposite) had plans! They surrounded my house with miles of gold and yellow bunting; looping it from attic windows across the road, and hanging a long banner, with name, date and occasion along the house opposite. There was a gazebo in my front garden, a table with flowers, an iced cake and candles (made by one of my neighbours) and a bottle of champagne. Just before 9 am, people started arriving, to stand 2 meters apart up and down the road. About 60 people struck up with “happy birthday” several times, and again when I blew out the candles. Fortunately it was a glorious May morning. Several people had brought biscuits and soft drinks. Hand washing facilities and sanitisers were provided. I allowed myself one sip of champagne, at this time in the morning! I was quite overwhelmed by the whole thing, so much love and kindness and rea joy. Children had made banners, one of my neighbours had collected items and stuck them in an album. The pile of cards grew and a few bemused strangers joined in. Everyone was saying how great it was to have a happy event together at the present time. They lingered, enjoying the refreshments and chatting for nearly an hour. During the day, I was in touch with so many of my family – Judith n Rotherham, Mick in Hong Kong and Rachel in Vancouver, were delighted that I was having such a wonderful time. Lots of photos and videos were taken so we can relive and enjoy together in the future. During the week there was a viola recital, one evening in the next door garden by a young professional musician. I had lots of cards and phone calls. I was greeted by Birthday girl when out for my short walks, and the charitable giving I had hoped for, happened. Thank you everyone. Advice to anyone planning celebration / Commotion A Advance planning ( must be flexible) B Bright Brilliant Bunting (any colour – lots) C Caring Community (essential)

21 Hathersage Parish Council • At the present time all our Parish Council meetings are being held using Zoom. Meetings are still open to the public and should you wish to join a meeting with either video and audio or just audio the details of each call can be found on the agenda for the meeting or by contacting the Clerk at the details below. The Parish Council’s noticeboard on the Parish Rooms, Heart of Hathersage, is not currently being used but all agenda are available from the website. • At July’s meeting of the Parish Council a member of the Hope Valley Climate Action Group (HVCAG) attended to appraise the Council about their hopes with regards encouraging the use of alternative forms of transport to reduce the use of motor vehicles. They intend to put out publicity about this. • Another section of HVCAG has also been in touch with the Parish Council about restricting the mowing of grass verges to encourage the growth of wildflowers. Various areas are being identified with ‘the bund’ at the bottom of Jaggers Lane being the first. • With the lifting of restrictions to allow people to travel further and get back to the ‘great outdoors’ the National Park as a whole has seen a massive influx of visitors. This has posed problems with obstructive car parking and an unnecessary increase in littering or more accurately in some cases waste bins not being big enough to cope with the increased demand. With regards littering in the village, The Parish Council has been in touch with District Council and weekend bin emptying has been increased; notices have been put on the bins in the Heart of Hathersage asking that if the bin is full visitors take their rubbish home and discussions have taken place with village food outlets to identify ways of working together to tackle the problem. • With the increase in visitor numbers there has sadly been an increase in people parking on the new paving at the Heart of Hathersage, some for more than a few minutes! The Parish Council were looking at this problem prior the current situation and have a planter on order made from sleepers to place in this area. The pandemic has delayed the construction and delivery of this but in the meantime crowd barriers have been purchased as a temporary measure that will allow pedestrian access but hopefully deter the parking of cars and motor bikes. Signage will also be in place. • The Parish Council’s Transport Committee has been in discussion with Derbyshire County Council Highways about the use of funds for making pavements in the village ‘Covid 19’ compliant. This will require the

22 temporary widening of footpaths in some places and the provision of cycle lanes at very narrow points with traffic control possibly implemented. • With social distancing in mind, the bird nesting season is nearly over so if your property faces a pavement please ensure your hedges are trimmed to allow pedestrians’ safe passage to minimise the need to step into the road. • The long-awaited Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) has been implemented in many areas of the village. However, further discussion is taking place with the Authority on the implementation of this in one area. • All Parish Council meetings are public meetings to which members of the public are welcome. The full council meeting is generally the first Tuesday of the month with committee meetings arranged as required but all meetings are posted on the diary of the Parish Council’s website. For further information visit the Parish Council Website at www.hathersageparishcouncil.gov.uk or contact the Clerk at [email protected].

Hathersage Historical Society

Like all our village societies the Historical Society has had to make difficult decisions about what can be done safely (and legally!) during this unprecedented period. It’s our 60th year and we had planned to mark it with an exhibition of some of our memorabilia and archive material in October, together with a celebration meal. Sadly we have had to cancel both these. Our Annual General Meeting, normally held in November, together with all our programmed meetings for 2020 will not go ahead. Please watch out for updates as the situation (hopefully!) improves. John Pilkington Vice Chairman Cliffe Lane Plant Sale – A big Thank You to all who bought plants and books during Lockdown, in support of a little village in Uganda, Rwanyana. Your generosity raised £250 which will help the village recover from floods, which caused crop damage, and road damage. It will help them feed the children, and re-build their houses and road. Really fantastic!

23 The Royal British Legion Hathersage Branch George Elliot, a long serving member of our branch will be celebrating his One-Hundredth birthday on 5th August. We send him many congratulations. Many will remember George, of Toothill Farm who was the charismatic milkman in the village for so many years, before he retired and then moved to Collingham, near Newark. VE Day 75 – 8th May 2020. During our secretary’s research it was discovered that a Hathersage couple, Pearl and Ron Wharton who later moved to Bamford, were married on VE day in 1945. Ron was serving on Minesweepers in the Royal Navy and had to return to his ship the very next day. Both he and Pearl later became Presidents of Hathersage Bowling Club. As we all know, everything that we all were planning on doing for VE Day 75 was cancelled because of the ‘Lockdown’. However, Bernard Madden with help from John Wilson installed in the Village Centre, a flagpole with a Union Jack which had been kindly donated by Keith Levick, together with a descriptive graphic panel. Revd Julie Letts from the Methodist church attended and gave a short service of remembrance before a few people who had gathered spontaneously, all observing social distancing. Our president Michael Shuttleworth did help the village to observe a two minutes silence by firing his cannon in Hathersage Hall Business Centre, to mark its start and end. It is hoped that something similar can be done for VJ Day 75, on 15th August. Remembrance Sunday this year is November 8th, although whether it will be able to go ahead in its normal form will of course depend upon the Covid-19 situation nearer that time. Another date of significance is 15th May 2021, which marks the centenary of the formation of the British Legion, although the centenary will be celebrated throughout the whole year. Brian Ward, Chairman.

24 Marmalade – a Jaggers Lane Lockdown Story One of the good things about the current global pandemic was the setting up of groups of neighbours to support each other coordinated by Caring in Hathersage. Some of these have Whats App groups, I think these are such a good idea I managed to join two. Early on in lockdown one of the neighbours asked in one of the Jaggers Lane Whats App groups if anyone knew who a friendly, fluffy orange coloured cat belonged to, he was a regular visitor and seemed to be partial to Whiskas. Another neighbour chipped in with the fact that at their house he enjoyed eating Felix. A third neighbour further along the lane was happy to have regular visits from the friendly cat and knew he was called ‘Marmalade’ and that he actually was based in the house next door to them. Marmalade’s “Dad” now joined in with the Whats App discussions saying he now understood why Marmalade wasn’t very hungry when he did bother to come home. He undertook to give him a “talking to” when he next appeared. One sunny Saturday morning in April I walked along the lane with Robert Nicklin ( home from uni) who was taking photographs for his lockdown project. Offspring ( some also home from uni) and dogs were located and posed politely in family groups. There was no sign of a friendly, fluffy, orange coloured cat. I plan to buy Robert’s book just to see if I can spot Marmalade with any other village household. I mentioned Marmalade in my Book Club Whats App group as I thought he would be a good subject for a story. The book club members know most things worth knowing between them. I was quickly informed there was already a pre school picture book called “Six Dinner Sid” about a cat with a similar lifestyle. One book club member Alex Jordan is a published author and writes as Alexandra Jordan. She was working on a follow up book “Murder in her Doorstep” to the one recently rebranded as “One Tiny Mistake” set in the fictional Peak District village of “Millerstone”. You would recognise the descriptions of the fictional village. The new story recently published is not set in a time of lockdown but features a fictional, friendly and fluffy orange coloured cat called Marmalade who plays an important part in the action…. Has this cat tried to join your bubble? Kay Furness email [email protected]

25 Hathersage Well Dressing. The origins of Well Dressing are thought to be a pagan custom of making sacrifice to the Gods for the provisions of fresh water. Later this was adopted by the Christian Church. In the early days, the dressing of wells took place in the form of simple arrangements of flowers. Origins in Derbyshire are associated with The Plague 1348-49 when a third of the population of died. Ring any contemporary bells? Tissington was spared and began dressing their well and holding a blessing ceremony. Many villages had a Well Queen which could be at the root of the modern Gala Retinue. The tradition was revived in the 1950’s as a means of encouraging tourism. In Hathersage community involvement is vital. There are three Well Dressings; School Well, Moorland House and the Village Well. Wooden boards, like trays, are soaked in the river for three weeks. Recycled clay is puddled to remove air pockets and obtain the right consistency. Next the boards are filled and smoothed. The design in outline form on brown paper, is laid on top of the clay then pricked with holes and marked with wool. Small sections of the paper are peeled away to retain as much moisture as possible, dry materials first, then petals are carefully placed. When the clay is completely covered the Well Dressing is transported to its final position. On the first Sunday of Gala Week the Clergy of the village Churches attend and carry out the Village Well Blessing service with music and the Gala Retinue in attendance. The well is dismantled at the end of Gala week. There are many memories of Well Dressing including losing a wedding ring in the clay at the start of the week and then finding it at dismantling. On the Hathersage Village Gala Facebook page and website you can find a slide show of past well dressings and a film of the construction of the 2019 Village Well Dressing. The Tree of Life . Huge thanks to everyone who gives valuable time to help get the Well Dressings off the ground and completed. For obvious reasons, sadly this year it was not possible to produce the Well Dressings. Perhaps organising or sponsoring a new well is an idea for next year. Fresh thoughts and more help are always welcome. Please email [email protected] or [email protected] Anne Yule Well dresser

HATHERSAGE CARELINE IN LOCKDOWN Hathersage Careline has operated its telephone befriending service in the village and immediate catchment area for over fifteen years and provides a free, friendly phone call each morning to people who live alone and are elderly or vulnerable. Call times can be tailored to Client needs, including those who do not require a call every day. It is operated entirely by trained volunteers and maintained by voluntary donations and local fundraising. As the Covid 19 virus struck and the grim consequences of lockdown became apparent, our volunteers quickly realised that they would be unable to make their calls from our usual office base. Recognising that our Clients would continue to value our befriending calls and might need them even more than before as they would be confined indoors, it was decided that the only solution would be to start phoning from home. The Careline team devised a new calling system. Instead of our volunteers ringing up to 15 clients from the office during their morning shift, they were each allocated an individual client to telephone at a prearranged, convenient time. We found we could maintain the flexibility of our normal operations. After two weeks the volunteers rotated, which helped to keep both callers and clients refreshed. We discovered unforeseen benefits to both parties as relationships quickly developed in a deeper way than had been possible under the previous scheme. The volunteers themselves particularly valued this opportunity to engage more fully with our friends. Two of Careline’s committee members were stranded in Mallorca in March and were unable to return home but continued to undertake Careline duties, which brought mutual benefits. Thankfully they have now safely returned home after sixteen ‘interesting’ weeks away. As we move forward through this epidemic Careline will continue to provide its service. It will be ready to adapt as the situation evolves and people return to what will be the new normal. Hathersage Careline welcomes new Clients and Volunteers – for more information please email us at [email protected] or contact Julie Graham on 651566. John Holliday

27 Swift Awareness Week Swifts don’t do lockdown! So, with Swift Awareness Week approaching, Hathersage Swift Group decided something must be done to mark the occasion. Obviously the usual guided walk around the swift hot spots of the village followed by a convivial social was going to prove problematical under the current circumstances. So it was decided to organise a Do-It-Yourself trail round the village as an alternative to the teddy bear and rainbow walks which have been so enjoyed by local families during the height of the restrictions. The map was made available on various internet platforms for people to download themselves, taking in the highlight of the Roslyn Road/Crescent colony – where additional information was available – and also sight of the prototype ‘Bird Hive’ multi species nesting tower on Park Edge. There was also the promise of a glimpse of the resident Barn Owls while walking through the grounds of Brookfield Manor. Swifts don’t do lockdown – and they don’t do bad weather either – so they were fairly thin on the ground ( for “on the ground” read “in the air”) during Swift Awareness Week, but several hardy bird spotting parties where seen clutching their maps and looking skywards. Hopefully the weather, swift sightings and the general situation will all improve before the end of the season. Lynden Hartmann

28 HATHERSAGE BOWLING CLUB Hathersage Bowling Club had a good start to the bowling year with what has now become our annual pre-season social evening of curling with a pie and pea supper. However, like the rest of the country, we were then hit by the coronavirus, just as we were getting ready to bowl. Very sadly we lost seven of our members during the lockdown period although ironically all through other illnesses. They are all greatly missed and our thoughts are with their families.

Fortunately, after many directives from the Government, Sport England, the governing body for Crown Green Bowls in England and the County Association as well as Hathersage Parish Council, it was agreed that bowls could start under very strict conditions. The pavilion and toilets could not be used, only one singles game could be on the green at any time with each player using their own equipment and no one else present. These games are only available to Hathersage Bowling Club members and are played under a booking system with each allocated a time slot with a record of all matches being maintained and regularly submitted to the bowling authority. Although players are getting to used to, and enjoying, bowling under these regulations It is hoped that “normal” bowling will be possible soon and there are a number of potential new members “waiting in the wings” for the conditions to be eased. We hope that the club will soon be permitted to invite members of the public to our green to “have a go” at our very sociable, friendly sport providing some gentle exercise in the fresh air. Watch this space or if you would like to join the list of people willing to “have a go” as soon as conditions permit, phone Brian Morris on 651835.

29 Review Of Hathersage Players’ Whodunnit: “Murder At Hathersage Hall” 11 July 2020 Well, if Lockdown causes this level of invention, maybe it’s not all bad! The Hathersage Players have moved from Stage to Screen with their latest thrilling drama, “Murder at Hathersage Hall”. Modelled upon a Cluedo-style game, eight suspects with names you’ll recognise like Colonel Mustard and Professor Plum, fight it out amongst themselves when caught in a web of suspicion. Whilst all the actors perform to the Players’ usual high standards, special mentions must go to Mike Thomson for his rip-roarious Dr Brown and Tim Saunders, who so manically keeps the whole show on the road as Keith Orange. Behind the scenes, Rob Hall (Writer and Director) and Nick Wardle (the thankless Producer and Editor) have done a great job. Filmed entirely in accordance with Lockdown restrictions and utilising their YouTube Channel for the broadcast, this ‘whodunnit’ features sections improvised over Zoom as well as a gripping finale (shot as live) outdoors in Hathersage Hall Business Centre. The whole production was complimented by Live Chat so that the online audience could share comments upon the suspects as the broadcast progressed. At the time of writing, the rave audience reviews as well as 375 online views point to the success of this production. The broadcast will stay online on their YouTube Channel for a good while if you want to grab it over a night in and a bottle of wine, but if you watch it, don’t tell anyone who the murderer is…!

30 So what’s happening at St Michaels and All Angels church? I’ve a feeling that when you read this update, it’s more likely to be yesterday’s news as it’s difficult to keep pace with all the changes which are happening as Covid-19 restrictions continue to be lifted. Within the Church of England things are moving along at quite a pace and we receive twice weekly updates from the Bishop’s office which give guidance on how to comply with the latest Government announcements. We have started to open the church for private prayer each week on Mondays 10.00am – 12.00, and on Thursdays 2.00pm – 4.00pm. Social distancing measures have to observed and much of the church is cordoned off to comply with cleaning requirements, so unfortunately we are unable to accommodate visitors who would like to have a look around. However, many have welcomed the opportunity to come in and pray or just sit quietly. Currently weddings and funerals can go ahead although the numbers attending are capped at 30. You may have seen a wedding on the news recently where the bride had to sanitise her hands on entering the church, and rather than walking down the aisle on her proud father’s arm, he trailed the mandatory 2 metres behind her, so maybe not quite the traditional wedding they had planned! We are working towards opening our lovely church again for services, and this is proving quite challenging with limiting numbers, social distancing, no singing allowed, and at the time of writing, your guess is as good as mine on the use of face coverings! However our Sunday services via Zoom are well supported by our own congregation and other churches in the area, so we need to ensure that those who rely on this form of service are not forgotten in the rush to return to worship in the Parish Church. The selection process for our new incumbent is on-going and we will continue to keep you updated. We do hope that you will find time to pop into St Michaels and All Angels to enjoy the peace, quiet and serenity found through the presence of God in this lovely church. We look forward to seeing you and assure you of a warm welcome and a bottle of hand sanitiser! Janice Hill Church Warden

31 Sunshine Pizza – The Lockdown Edition Sunshine Pizza usually operate a mobile pizza oven that travels all over the Hope Valley – they had to adapt their business into a delivery model like so many, and Dan and Sarah have written here about the challenges.

Flour and salt were the most essential, everything else could be worked around, we decided, as we started planning in February. Tomatoes, meats and cheeses were also stockpiled while supplies were available, and the store cupboards filled with anchovies, olives, capers and the like. In the end (so far, at least) nothing ran out although we did juggle the dough recipe for a few weeks as certain flour supplies became restricted. Several kilos of yeast were ordered and shared with home bakers in the area, making us very popular.

Tim at Peak Fruits and the team at Harrington’s Butchers never missed a beat, keeping us and the local community safely supplied with top quality, fresh produce throughout the whole of lockdown. The ordering system by text was time consuming but Peaked Interest, in the Valley, designed a website to fit our system and so far so good. We hooked up with our neighbours, Penny's Cars, who have The Knowledge of the area and could plan the routes accordingly. Delivering lots of pizzas requires lots of pizza boxes, something we almost forgot - a chain is only as strong as its weakest link!

With hindsight, we would have done a few things differently - delivering to Tideswell (a 40 minute round trip from our base in Bamford) free of charge being one of them - but keeping the business going and providing a little slice (oof!) of normality during lockdown was our main priority. All the weddings and big gatherings were wiped out of the calendar this year unsurprisingly, so instead, this summer, we are carrying on with deliveries for the foreseeable future and attending pop up outdoor events and local camp sites in and around the Hope Valley.

Best wishes from Sunshine Pizza – see advert for contact details
