Bora-Hansgrohe, Deceuninck-QuickStep, Jumbo-Visma, Lotto Soudal, Qhubeka Assos and UAE Team Emirates are pulling the peloton. Average speed after one hour of racing: 46.800 km/h. The situation does not change remarkably 50 and 60 km into the race, as the gap still hovers around 3’45”. Intermediate Sprint (Springs Village - km 67.1) Gallopin leads Ladagnous, Elosegui and Sánchez into the intermediate sprint; the bunch comes through at 3’20”. Stork is caught up in a crash and abandons the race. Around 70 km into the race, the gap is slightly down to 3’. At km 80 and at km 85, the bunch is trailing at 2’45”. Moschetti abandons the race, after being caught in a crash some ten kilometres earlier. Groupama-FDJ’s Roux gives in, too. At km 91, the break still hold a 2’30 lead. The pace picks up, and the peloton splits in two echelons, separated by 30”. All the GC contenders are in the first chasing group, which trails 2’08” behind the break at km 95, as the second echelon is 2’30” down the road. Intermediate Sprint (Al Qudra Cycletrack - km 103.3) Gallopin takes the IS ahead of Sánchez, Valter and Lutsenko. The peloton passes through 1’12” later, with the chasers a handful seconds back (1’29”). At km 105, the escapees are leading by 1’09” over the peloton, and by 1’25” over the chasers. The two echelons are back together at km 110, trailing 1’ behind the break. The gap is getting increasingly smaller, and the breakaway riders are eventually brought back at the -25 km marker. Average speed after three hours: 46.900 km/h. Gruzdev accelerates with a little over 20 km remaining to the finish, building a 15” advantage straight away. The peloton kicks up the pace, trying to leash him in, with Movistar pulling at the front. Grudzev is eventually caught up at the -10 km marker. Astana, Bahrain, Deceuninck-QuickStep and Ineos move to the front. A crash 6 km before the finish causes the peloton to string out. The closing phases are hectic, with teams jostling for position. BikeExchange and DSM also move to the front. At the flamme rouge, Ackermann, Bennett, Dekker, Ewan, Mørkøv and Viviani are battling for stage victory. FINISH (Palm Jumeirah – km 165) Bennett takes the stage ahead of Viviani, Ackermann, Dekker, Gaviria, Nizzolo, Groves, Greipel, Bol and Mørkøv. • Binckbank Tour – 2
