  • The Best Totally-Not-Planned 'Shockers'
Style Blog The best totally-not-planned ‘shockers’ in the history of the VMAs By Lavanya Ramanathan August 30 If you have watched a music video in the past decade, you probably did not watch it on MTV, a network now mostly stuck in a never-ending loop of episodes of “Teen Mom.” This fact does not stop MTV from continuing to hold the annual Video Music Awards, and it does not stop us from tuning in. Whereas this year’s Grammys were kind of depressing, we can count on the VMAs to be a slightly morally objectionable mess of good theater. (MTV has been boasting that it has pretty much handed over the keys to Miley Cyrus, this year’s host, after all.) [VMAs 2015 FAQ: Where to watch the show, who’s performing, red carpet details] Whether it’s “real” or not doesn’t matter. Each year, the VMAs deliver exactly one ugly, cringe-worthy and sometimes actually surprising event that imprints itself in our brains, never to be forgotten. Before Sunday’s show — and before Nicki Minaj probably delivers this year’s teachable moment — here are just a few of those memorable VMA shockers. 1984: Madonna sings about virginity in front of a blacktie audience It was the first VMAs, Bette Midler (who?) was co-hosting and the audience back then was a sea of tux-wearing stiffs. This is all-important scene-setting for a groundbreaking performance by young Madonna, who appeared on the top of an oversize wedding cake in what can only be described as head-to-toe Frederick’s of Hollywood.

Though trans women of color, such as Laverne Cox and Janet Mock, are more visible in mainstream media than ever before, mainstream media still largely depicts trans people through white constructs of what it means to be trans, namely medicalized binary transitions.

ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO tells the story of Chris Crocker, a video blogger from a small town in Tennessee. Crocker is part of the first generation of kids raised on the Internet, coming of age under constant self- surveillance. His online videos, including the infamous YouTube declaration “Leave Britney Alone!”– have been viewed hundreds of millions of times and have created a worldwide phenomenon. This portrait weaves a tapestry of Internet media with reactions from Crocker fans and haters to examine a new controversial kind of fame: the Internet folk hero. ACQUIRED BY HBO (USA) AND BBC (UK) DIRECTOR’S WORD Like so many others, we first discovered Chris Crocker by being sent early online videos such as “Bitch Please” and “This or That”. The first question we asked was apparently a common one. “Is this real?” Years later we began making a film that asked the same question in a more general sense. We began a documentary about the history and impact of reality televi- sion. As ideas of consciousness shift in lockstep with new technology, “Reality” has become the dominant medium. Our film research took us around the world. We interviewed everyone from the cast of the original Dutch reality show, Hollywood executives and even a Reality TV School. In the end, this hunt for reality brought us to a small town in Tennessee and to Chris Crocker. Crocker was raised in the age of reality where anyone with a camera can become a star.

Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 1 Running Head: UNINTENTIONAL DIALOGUES ON YOUTUBE Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube RESEV 554: Semester Project Analysis Memo Laura Bestler Iowa State University December 15, 2008 Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 2 Introduction The purpose of this video is to illustrate themes within the online user commentary reacting to Chris Crocker’s (2008) YouTube video titled, “Gay HATE on YouTube!” The central question of this study is how users intermittently engage about Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Questioning (LGTBQQ) topics represented on YouTube. The unintentional dialogues between users on YouTube™ are providing additional knowledge to what is happening within today’s society (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). Online social networks are a natural place to employ post modern theory due to its playfulness, reflexivity, and the deconstruction of the cyber world (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). The research findings demonstrate a connection between time and negative user reactions towards LGBTQQ topics. Why Online? An evolution of the online world has taken place to provide everyone the ability to create content. Social networks provided a way people to connect with friends, family and online social acquaintances. Similar to the offline world, user created content had begun to utilize hate language and expletives to describe people. These degrading interactions provided a catalyst for me to take action. This online social laboratory can be brought to light, deconstructed and transcended. Therefore, helping people understand their actions are broader than snippet commented online. These unintentional dialogues are broadcast around the world. The internet is an environment where people’s small gestures may become large, and it is a mirror or lens of the world around them (Popkin, 2008).

  • So You've Been Musically Shamed
WILLIAM CHENG Dartmouth College Email: [email protected] So You’ve Been Musically Shamed ABSTRACT In July 2014, an anonymous source leaked the raw audio of Britney Spears’s confessional ballad “Alien.” Haters pounced on this star’s denuded voice, gleefully seizing on the viral artifact as a smoking gun for Spears’s deficits and for the pop industry’s artistic fakeries more broadly. My paper situates this flashpoint of Spears-shaming within late-capitalist archives of public humiliation, cyberleaks, and the paternalistic scrutiny of women’s bodies and voices. KEYWORDS: critical theory, media studies, popular music A marketplace has emerged where public humiliation is a commodity and shame is an industry. How is the money made? Clicks. The more shame, the more clicks. – monica lewinsky1 “Poor Britney Spears” is not the beginning of a sentence you hear often uttered in my household. – tony hoagland, “poor britney spears,” beginning of the poem2 In the summer of 2014, the internet sprang a musical leak. Suddenly circulating on YouTube was a video featuring the allegedly raw, non-Auto-Tuned sounds of Brit- 3 ney Spears singing her new album track “Alien.” Spears’s voice in this recording was noticeably off-key and off-kilter, like some abject artifact meant to be overwritten, for- gotten, abandoned on the cutting room floor. In the video’s comment threads, view- ers’ strident pronouncements of aching ears and melting brains swirled in a chorus of mockery. Haters pounced on the star’s denuded voice and offered it as airtight 1. 41 Comrade Britney and the Critical Potential of Marxist Memeing Contemporary Matters Journal – Issue #3 42 Comrade Britney and the Critical Potential of Marxist Memeing by Sophie Publig “It’s comrade Britney, bitch” is written in pink pseudo-cyrillic letters over a red background.¹ In the center of the image, we see the famous counterfeits that form the classic genealogy of Marxist thinkers: Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Britney Spears. Wait, Britney Spears, US-American pop hit machine since the late 1990s? If she never struck you as a thinker of the proletariat, perhaps it’s time to go through her lyrical œuvre that has not been short of making labor a subject of discussion. Take, for example, the 2013 electro pop classic “Work B*tch”: You want a hot body? You want a Bugatti? You want a Maserati? You better work bitch You want a Lamborghini? Sippin’ martinis? Look hot in a bikini? You better work bitch You wanna live fancy? Live in a big mansion? • Camp 2.0: a Queer Performance of the Personal
Communication, Culture & Critique ISSN 1753-9129 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Camp 2.0: A Queer Performance of the Personal Aymar Jean Christian Department of Communication, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA Camp, a style of performance in queer subcultures, is being reimagined in the online video portal of YouTube. Online performers—mostly young and queer—have infused camp with a neoliberal sense of individuality, emotional authenticity, and personal development, thereby challenging historical understandings of camp as wholly ironic and disengaged or politically charged. These shifts in self-presentation are reflected in statements made by performers in interviews and in the videos posted by these vloggers. doi:10.1111/j.1753-9137.2010.01075.x Britney Houston’s career shift came rapidly. Performing onstage as ‘‘Angel’’ in Rent, Houston started touring gay bars across the country, performing in drag for the very first time to benefit local gay causes. Discovering an untapped form of self-expression, Houston soon adapted her drag performance from the community-oriented space of the gay bar to the personal space of YouTube. The journey of Britney Houston from the traditional world of camp in bars—public yet impersonal—to the new world of online queer performance—public yet personal—marks a shift in the history and development of camp. Spurred by YouTube’s structure and broader social trends, I argue camp perform- ers like Houston are infusing sincerity, emotion, and deeper meanings of selfhood into ‘‘camp.’’ Camp, a decades-old convention among gay and queer performers, has a rich and complicated history, its meanings and forms periodically shifting and constantly debated.

Platforms have altered how people search, find, and share information, and how social interactions take place online. This new era of user practices, micro-communication cultures, and an increasing algorithmic shaping of sociability, opens up new research endeavours to understand communication as a cultural practice. While platforms are reluctant to acknowledge that they work as media companies, and present themselves as being ‘neutral’, they intervene in public discourse through their design, policies, and corporate decisions. This intervention is increasingly under public scrutiny at a time when racist and sexist speech is thriving online. The entanglement between user practices and platforms in the reinforcement of racism is the focus of my research. Specifically, I argue that this entanglement
