KIWANIS GARDEN PROJECT TAKES ROOT AT THE FSBGC With new vegetable gardens located at three of the FSBGC units, Club members are very excited about the Spring growing season. The Kiwanis Club is supporting the project, which include gardens located at Evans, Goldtrap-Gardner and Stephens. “Club members are digging in the dirt for a great cause” said Tim Higgins, Evans Boys & Girls Club assistant director. “They’re really interested in this new program” he added. Walton has been replaced by his son, Hugh Maurras, a local businessman who has been involved in various community projects. Walton Maurras is a retired attorney who resides in Fort Smith with his wife Jeri. Dr. Cole Goodman – has been named president of the St. Edward Mercy Clinic. Goodman has served on the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club board of directors for Bill Sowell, Hal Smith, and Bill Norvell discuss baseball during the past 17 years and was board president in 2008- the banquet reception. Smith is a former Major League All-Star catcher with the St. Louis Cardinals. 2009. He is a lifetime member of the FSBGC Alumni & Friends Association. Goodman is very active in the community, and is a Fort Smith City Director (position 7). He’s practiced medicine for over 30 years. Charles Warren – recently received the 2010 Arkansas Society of Certifi ed Public Accountants Public Service award. Warren’s been a long-time volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club, where he is a past Sir Thomas Lipton Award winner. Warren also volunteers for Fulfi ll a Dream and the Make a Wish Foundation. He is the grandson of the legendary Claire Bates, who was a member of the original Fort Smith Boys Club in 1928. Tom Minton (left) received an award on behalf of the United Way of Fort Smith. Inness received a college wrestling scholarship his senior year at Southside High, and is a former volunteer assistant baseball coach for Kerwin’s American Legion team. Eric Burnett – is the new head basketball coach at Northside High. Burnett is a long-time FSBGC alumni member and grew up as a daily participant at the Stephens unit. He’s a graduate of Northside High and AR Tech University. He worked at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club each summer when he was Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club supporters Randy Bittle, Dr. Jim Saviers, Dr. Boyd Saviers, and Marlin Fretheim talk about an a College student. Arnold is a past Club member who was recognized by his College as ‘Defensive player of the year.’ Page 6 www.fsbgc.org Spring 2010 2010 MARILYN FOSTER ESSAY AND PHOTOGRAPHY WINNERS ANNOUNCED With a big awards ceremony held on March 16 at the Goldtrap-Gardner Boys & Girls Club, Marilyn Foster presented $ 400 in prize money to winners of the annual Essay and Photography competitions. Recipients who fi nished 1st , 2nd and 3rd received cash prizes in two age divisions. All of the top fi nalists received certifi cates and booklet compilations that include all of the top selections. This year’s essay theme was “Proud to be an Marilyn Foster Contest Winners - presentations were made American.” Marilyn Foster has sponsored Literary Arts to the top participants in the annual Marilyn Foster Essay and (poetry and essay) contests at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Photography contests on March 16 at the Goldtrap-Gardner Boys & Girls Club Club for the past 14 years.
