PLDY IT mI9ouLs! Play It Missoula! {:Vt.tJNII V uh1jProject Summary & Documentation

The downtown Play It Missoula! Piano Project started the spring of 2014 when two donated pianos were placed on the sidewalks of . In the spring of 2015, four newly donated pianos were painted in local galleries and coffee shops before placing them in downtown’s public right of ways. All four of these pianos have recently been delivered to storage for the winter and will hopefully return the spring of 2016. The goal of this project is three-fold: • To encourage all community members and tourists to play the pianos and to listen to spontaneous music on the streets. (Place-making qualities) • To provide live music performances and art in the public realm. (Place-making qualities) • To prevent serial inebriates from sitting and sleeping in the public right of way in strategic locations in Downtown Missoula. (Economic vibrancy) The two year program has accomplished much more than anticipated. This year, we partnered with the University of and placed one of the pianos in the Homecoming Parade, connecting the UM Music Department & Keyboard Society to this program, and recently we featured two UM Piano professors who played duets on two pianos in the Bank Street Pocket Park for an event in downtown. Community members continue to donate pianos and the four 2015 artists donated their craft and time to share their artistry, not to mention the places that hosted a piano in their establishment for two months. Response from community members and tourists has both been overwhelmingly positive, and appreciation for the program is consistently communicated via emails, phone calls and during personal conversations. This project has also engaged people to speak to one another, get acquainted with each other, and listen or play music together when typically each party would never have considered striking up a conversation.

Locations of the 2015 downtown pianos include: • Under the Roxy Theater marquee • In the Bank Street Pocket Park near Hunter Bay Coffee • In front of the Downtown Dance Collective (DDC) on West Main St. • Near Worden’s Market Locations for next year’s pianos may slightly shift to address two local downtown residents who wish to not hear the piano music all day. We take into consideration pedestrian traffic flow, cover for the pianos, residents, and any locations that may have behaviors developing that we would like to see stop. We initially placed a piano near the new Mrytle mural near Betty’s Divine on the Hip Strip. It was moved to the Roxy Theater location in order to accommodate local residents who lived in the apartments above the piano.

Support from the Heart of Missoula Neighborhood Council was given for a small grant request that was granted for the 2015 season. Support of this project is strong from surrounding businesses. Most local retail businesses see this is a great community program that enhances their business and downtown traffic to their business. Support is also indicated in the number of places that agreed to host a piano in order for artists to paint. Businesses continue to call to see how they could get a piano out front of their business (Betty’s Divine, The Roxy & DDC in 2015). Worden’s Market and Hunter Bay Coffee, near the Bank Street Pocket Park, continue to want the pianos in those locations to address serial inebriate challenges. IT Play It Missoula! Piano Project

This piano, along with the other 3 in Downtown are now in winter storage. This piano will be placed again in Downtown Missoula in 2016.

Name: “The Fox” - Piano artist: Luke Smith & Madeline Carr (with volunteer help from Logan Van Damme) — Between all three people, this piano took over 40 hours of total volunteer time. The Community Forum small grant helped to pay for this piano’s paint in 2015.)

Near Worden’s Market, 430 N. Higgins Ave.

LukeSmith believes Missoula is the music and art cultural center of Montana. Asa native Montanan, it is important to me to be near my family,

but also in a place where my art can thrive — Missoula is this place for me. I liketo combine music and painting. Missoula, the “zoo,” is a wild place and

that is why Ichose the fox; an animal with an instrument is most likely

playing something awesome. Ifeel the paint on this piano willdraw people into play “like a fox,” and feeds the creative vibe of the Zoo.

Madeleine Carr is a recent Missoula transplant who enjoys painting nature and other strange things. This is her first piano. Youcan find more art at MACARR.NETor follow her on twitter @MadeleineACarr

Name: “Ghosts’ - Piano artist: BaylaArietta (with sponsorship help from WGMGroup, Baylapainted this piano. WGM paid for paint and a portion of her time.) Bayla currently lives and works in Missoula and is proud to have this Bank Street Pocket Park - 1205. Higgins Ave. opportunity to paint a piano for the Play it Missoulal project and contribute her time and work to the local community. Incorporating the natural landscape and native species, she has painted ghostly animals running through rolling hills and pines under a night sky. This project was extremely enjoyable and a fun experiment with acrylic paints as Bayla primarily works in watercolors and pen and ink.

Born and raised in upstate New York,Bayla has been incessantly painting and drawing the people and environments around her since the day she could first hold a crayon. Pursuing a career in Illustration, Bayla has studied all over the world including Italy, Mexico, The Camberwell College of Arts in London, and has a BFAfrom The Hartford Art School in Connecticut. She has had extensive experience teaching painting, drawing, printmaking, and bookbinding to all ages and has planned and coordinated shows for youth and young adults with developmental disabilities. Bayla has had her art work displayed in numerous exhibits Piano by: The BID, sponsored Downtown and galleries across the country, including The Missoula Art Museum, The City of Missoula Community Forum, Dotz Piano Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy NY,The National Heirloom & Rollie Dotz, Jeff Stickney Tuning & Repair, Exposition in California, and the Philadelphia Flower Show. Bayla’swork First Interstate Bank, WGM, and has been featured on album covers, product packaging, logo design, and E3Convergence Gallery. This piano’s fate is in films such as Allen Coulter’s ‘Remember Me’. Having recently moved to headed to a garden art location. It didn’t town from Sitka Alaska, Bayla looks forward to more opportunities and weather as well as the others and is the one future involvement in the Missoula arts community. piano that will need to be replaced through outside funding. The Bank Street Pocket Park will continue to be a site for a piano as it fills the space with music and the community is utilizing this plaza area now more than ever before due to the draw of the piano.

Name: DDC Beauty — No artist

Downtown Dance Collective - 121W. Main Street

This upright piano sat in front of the Downtown Dance Collective for half of the summer. This piano was not painted as it was too beautiful to paint at the time it was put out. It provided one more piano in Downtown Missoula, totaling four street pianos. This piano, along with the other 3 in Downtown are now in winter storage until the 2016 season. The DDC Beauty had some damage done to it and will most likely be the piano that is painted for the 2016 season. Its playing integrity is still good but needs a few minor repairs. Placement of this piano for next year is still TBD.

LONG RANGE STRATEGIC PLANNINGICiLRENT PROJECTS

The Play It Missoula! project creates place-making for Downtown Missoula; utilizingplace and space to facilitate creative patterns of use to increase economic activities and displace negative behavior. The Project For Public Spaces defines place-making as, “an overarching hands-on approach for neighborhoods to inspire people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. It can strengthen the connection between people and the places they share and refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value. Place-making pays particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution.”

The Downtown Master Plan’s Arts and Culture & Retail sections detail several goals this project fulfills, such as: Arts & Culture • Both public and private arts and cultural uses should be promoted: Play It Missoula! is a public and private project with multiple partners showcasing the arts, music, and cultural components. • Partnership between arts and cultural facilities and educational institutions should be promoted: Play It Missoula! is a primary example of how partnerships between non-profits, government agencies, and the University of Montana can form and be successful for all parties involved. The BIDand the Missoula Downtown Foundation (MDF)continue to work with the UMMusic Department and the Keyboard Society on this project. From the beginning, these entities collaborated together helping to build each program and continue to support each other. This partnership facilitated a downtown piano in the Homecoming Parade this year, co-created a well-attended MDF event in the Bank Street Pocket Park featuring two of UM’swell known and respected professors of piano, and MDF staff assisted UM Music Department’s sponsorship outreach effort for its annual piano concert, “Pianissimo!” that took place in early October, 2015. • Complimentary public realm improvements should linkand unifythe district; improvements should include opportunities for the display and promotion of art and cultural activities: Play It Missoula! purposefully places pianos in areas that unifythe Downtown urban core including helping to bridge the north and south sides of the river between what people perceive as Downtown on the north side of the river with the Hip Strip on the south side of the . Retail • Encourages uses that willsupport existing and new housing, employment, arts and culture development. The Play It Missoula! project is a creative and fun way to insert novelty, excitement around the pianos being placed in the early summer months, and a new way to engage community members and tourists in our downtown economy. There are numerous partnerships that have been created through this project. In additional to the connection with the University of Montana, here are just a few more:

• 2014 Program — twopianos were “given”to the kidsto paint for the ZACC’safterschool program.

• 2015 Program — MDF/BIDstaff connected with the Missoula Arts Councilto include the piano painting project and their locations on the Missoula Gallery Guide from March through May.

• 2015 Program — MDF/BIDstaff connected to four different downtown retailers to host a piano to be painted, allowing them to social media buzz on their own sites as well as the MDF’spromotions while artists donated their time and talents. First Fridayattendees enjoyed a new type of art to look at and to watch the artists’ progress on each piano.

• 2014 & 2015 Programs — MDF/BIDstaff has been contacted by the following communities to give advice on Missoula’s downtown piano program, helping to serve as a model for other communities: Great Falls& Kalispell,Montana, Elgin,Illinois,Cheyenne, Wyoming, and most recently, Mt Vernon, Washington.

An Emailreceived by MDF/BIDstaff on August 18, 2015 Hello:

Iwas forwarded your Facebook post about the outdoor pianos you have sprinkled around town - very cool!

Can Iask a few questions about logistics? Since imitation is the highest form of flattery, Iwould like to look more into this project that you have created. Ifyou would not mind sharing: Were the pianos all donated? Do they stay out all the time or will local businesses bring them in? What was the biggest challenge to bringing this project to a reality? The DNAis beginning to push more of the arts on the streets, and this would be a perfect fit for our downtown area. Thank you for sharing any information that you can. Warm regards, Deirdre White, Executive Director Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin,IL(DNA) N.Spring Elgin,IL 60120 10 I

The greatest aspect of this program is how it blurs the lines between all socio-economic backgrounds, connecting people with each other regardless of how well you play, or what you look like. Music is played and community members and tourists alike share stories, music, and art; all the while creating community in a different realm. CITIZENSUPPORT

Thepianos seem to have survived the summer OK,although the Ghost piano was very out of tune when 1tuned itfor the piano duo event. Mr. Foxis missing both strings on C2in the bass, so we might need to get new strings for that piano at some point Thanks again for all your efforts in keeping the program alive - Ialways get great feedback when I’mout there to tune them. —JeffStickney, Piano Tuning& Repairs

Well, Imust say that yesterday was a day of pride with the pianos. My family and Icame to the farmer’s market, and we got a parking spot right in front of Worden’s. There was nobody playingthe piano at that point, and most were just walking by:( As Iwalked out of Worden’s market where Igot a paper from the box on the sidewalk, a former student of mine, who just finished his first year at Yale, yelled before Ieven saw him, “Dr. Hahn, these pianos are awesome!” Then about 5 seconds later, the parents of two of my current students (another who is headed to Yalethis year!!), came running up, totally stoked as well! With my family in the mix, we had quite the gathering right there. Then, the piano started getting interesting: a guy who looked to be on the homeless spectrum sat down and started to noodle a little bit, super casual. Then a middle-aged couple approached him and started chatting, and he got up and said, “Oh, go for it! Idon’t really play anyways.” The guy from the couple sat down, and started rocking BillyJoel, Scott Joplin, the Peanuts theme, Duke Ellington! It was great! A nice crowd gathered. Aswe finallygot in the car and drove away, a 12 year old boy had sat down and was playing some Mendelssohn! So awesome! Later in the day, after being at the school, Idrove back down Higgins(my new route home!). There were two ladies sitting at the Fox piano, one playing, the other on the bench turned towards the street reading the newspaper. Inthe pocket park, a gentleman had his bike leaning against the railing while he was just playing away! I love it! I also received many many compliments from friends and neighbors about the article in the . This isgreat!

The sponsorship &general support we receive speaks volumes for this project: Financialsupport of this program isvaried, as indicated in the promotional poster depicted in the citizen support section. Primary funding is provided by:

• The Downtown BID • The Missoula Downtown Foundation

Please refer to the enclosed budget and corresponding letters from the above entities.

The staff and board of the requesting organizations strongly feel that paying artists to share their craft is very important to acknowledge and to be active in this regard as a community. Therefore, a portion of this grant request isto be a community participant in paying an artist, which often is taken for granted as well as overlooked. The $1,000 line item in the budget and requested grant funds is to pay for an artist’s commission. The 2015 piano project requested all artists to donate their time and acknowledged the fact we could not pay them this year. Onlyone piano will need painted for 2016 and in which paying an artist a decent commission is a goal of both the BIDand the MDF. rr”

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is to serve as the BID’s commitment to the Play It Missoula! project. The BID Board of Directors has committed to pay for staff time spent on the project as well as $1,500 for expenses in 2016. Our fiscal year begins July 1’ and these funds have been approved for project needs listed in the project budget.

This piano project has been successful in many ways. It provides a deterrent to behaviors we are consistently trying to combat in Downtown Missoula, and it provides for place-making qualities that help our local retailers. The project has been well received by business owners and employees in Downtown as well as those that enjoy the pianos through their own playing of music or listening to others play.

On behalf of the BID Board of Directors, I thank you for your consideration of supporting this program for 2016. We are in hopes the Missoula Downtown Foundation will be able to acquire a donor to pick up the remaining costs for subsequent years.

Sincerely,

The BIDand the MDFare committed to seeing this project continue and willensure that all maintenance is taken care of. Currently, the maintenance of the pianos is minimal. The community really takes care of the pianos and when repairs are needed, Jeff Stickney offers his work at half his normal costs. Next year, the MDFwill be seeking private support of this program to continue it for a few more years or more. The MDFis still growing and working on gaining on-going annual support, and through one more season of pianos, this project should be financially sustainable by the MDF& BIDorganizations.

RE: “Play It Missoula”Piano Project

Noreen,

As you requested, I’m writing to confirm that I assisted you as a volunteer working on behalf of the “Play It Missoula” Piano Project in 2015.

Myrecords indicate that I began in this role in March, when together we inspected the pianos that had been used last year to determine, which, if any, might be used in 2015. I prepared a Project Statement that listed the proposed piano locations, the artists that would be involved along with their contact information and that for each of the venues. Throughout this process I worked with Christopher Hahn, UMpiano professor; Jeff Stickney, piano technician; and you to develop a timetable and strategy for the “roll out” of the pianos.

I’m pleased to have worked on a program that was so well received by all who were involved. There’s no doubt that this program greatly enhanced the experience for all who visited our Missoula Downtown. I look forward to assisting again with the program in 2016.

Sincerely,
