Dario Fo & Franca Rame’s THE OPEN COUPLE Director: Sara Zaker Playwright: Dario Fo & Franca Rame Director: Sara Zaker Group: Nagorik Natya Sampradaya, Bangladesh Language: Bengali Duration: 1 hr The Play The Open Couple, written by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, and adapted by Sara Zaker, is the story of a couple where the husband is having multiple affairs. The wife is going crazy and wants to kill herself each time she discovers her husband’s latest affair with yet another woman. As the play proceeds the husband convinces his wife to accept the concept of an ‘open relationship’. As the story moves on the husband discovers that the wife too has fallen in love with another man. Seeing the wife so happy and in control, makes him very angry and jealous. Now, the husband behaves in the same manner as his wife earlier did i.e. trying to jump off the window of a four-storied building, attempting to shoot himself with a revolver etc. The wife, in turn, now pacifies him and urges him to have a dialogue in exactly the same way he had urged her when she was going crazy. Director’s Note I adapted The Open Couple when my family was going through a crisis. My husband was detected with stomach cancer and was treated for more than six months in a foreign land. I took my mind away from all the side effects he had due to chemotherapy by working on this play. Adapting this play gave me relief from stress. I am primarily a performer so writing feeds the actor in me. -

Who’s afraid of Dario Fo? Paratextual commentary in English-language versions of Accidental Death of an Anarchist Marion Dalvai This article analyzes the paratextual commentary in six English versions of Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist. In the paratexts, translators, adaptors and literary critics engage with two problems: Fo’s permission to freely adapt his texts, on the one hand, and the demand for fidelity in a philological sense, on the other. Keywords: theatre translation, paratextual commentary, translation, adaptation, authenticity in translation. Cet article analyse les commentaires paratextuels dans six versions anglaises de Mort accidentelle d’un anarchiste par Dario Fo. Traducteurs, adaptateurs et critiques littéraires font face à deux problèmes: d’un côté, la permission que donne Fo de adapter librement ses textes et, de l’autre côté, l’exigence de rester fidèle dans un sens philologique à l’original. Mots clés : traduction théâtrale, commentaire paratextuel, traduction, adaptation, authenticité en traduction Morte accidentale di un anarchico, one of Dario Fo’s best known plays, is based on a true story: in 1969, a railway worker, Giuseppe Pinelli, was accused of involvement in the Piazza Fontana bombing in Milan. During police questioning, Pinelli fell to his death from a window on the fourth floor, raising the question as to whether he jumped or was pushed. In the play, the central figure called the “Matto” – variously translated as “the Maniac” or “the Madman”– resorts to playing different roles (a high court judge, a police officer, a bishop) in order to show that the true culprits were the policemen interrogating the anarchist. -

The William Harris Papers Marymount Manhattan College 221 East 71st Street New York, New York 10021 Archives Collection #001 Processed October 2, 2001 Mary Elizabeth Brown William Balber (Billy) Harris was born April 9, 1951, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was an alumnus of the Lawrenceville School and of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Upon graduation, he moved to New York. At one time, he lived on Reade Street in Tribeca, and at the time of his death, he lived in #7C at 160 Front Street near the Fulton Fish Market.1 He divided his time between two kinds of writing, one being business writing. He was a staff writer for Forbes Magazine and Institutional Investor and managing editor of Treasury and Risk Management and The Daily Deal. He was also a drama and dance critic. He became interested in the theater in Pittsburgh, where he worked designing props under Peter Chandler of Periwig Productions, and at the Kirby Arts Center. He recalled coming to New York from Pittsburgh at the age of 17 to pay $9 to see a performance of Hair.2 He was the theater editor for the SoHo Weekly News and managing editor of Theatre Crafts Magazine. He also wrote articles, criticism and reviews for Art Forum, Brooklyn Bridge, The New York Times, The Newark Star Ledger, and The Village Voice. It was in the course of this work that he amassed his collection of papers. Mr. Harris died of a massive coronary July 27, 2000, in New York City at the age of 49. He was survived by his mother Vivienne, of Pittsburgh; his sister, Ellen, who lived in Denver, and his brother John, a physician in the San Francisco area. -

Each year, a renowned theatre artist of world stature is invited by ITI Worldwide in Paris to craft an international message to mark the global occasion. This year the message will be written by Italian Nobel Prize- winning playwright, director and actor Dario Fo. Upon its release in March, the message will be translated into more than 20 languages to reach tens of thousands in the international theatre community. Through World Theatre Day 2013, TCG/ITI-US will celebrate the power of theatre to strengthen cultural exchange and mutual understanding across borders.
