The season’s pinnacle event is right around the corner and, with just one knockout round remaining, we will soon know which four teams will compete at the FAIRNESS 10th edition of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne on 1/2 June 2019. French side Paris Saint-Germain and Spanish team Barça Lassa earned their places in the quarter-finals as winners of their respective groups. They are joined by six clubs that & RESPECT qualified through the Last 16: Telekom Veszprém HC and MOL-Pick Szeged from Hungary, HBC Nantes from France, HC Vardar from North Macedonia, SG Flensburg- Handewitt from Germany and PGE Vive Kielce from Poland. Current title holders Montpellier HB did not make it through the group phase, however three of the four teams that participated in last season’s VELUX EHF FINAL4 still have a chance to return to Cologne. Apart from MOL-Pick Szeged, all of the quarter-final teams have experience playing at the biggest event in men’s club handball and there will be an open race for a place at the most important weekend of the 2018/19 season. The quarter-finals will offer exciting matches, as last season’s finalists HBC Nantes take on powerhouse Barça Lassa, Paris Saint-Germain meet Kielce in a repeat of this stage of the previous season and SG Flensburg-Handewitt prepare for Telekom Veszprém. The only newcomer to Cologne that might emerge is MOL-Pick Szeged, who are facing 2017 champions HC Vardar. Every one of the eight teams wants to reach the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne. Da will Veszprém erneut hin. After a two-month break which culminated in the Men’s EHF EURO 2018, the time has finally come to shift the focus back from the national teams to the continent’s top clubs. There were as many as 140 VELUX EHF Champions League players present in Croatia and no fewer than 13 gold medallists from Spain have returned to their clubs determined to carry on riding the wave of success in the Europe's premium competition. The situation in Groups A and B is wide open and all 16 participants still have a chance to move on to the knockout stage. While the defending champions from Vardar dominate in the competition as the group leaders and also the only remaining team to beat, Paris Saint-Germain sit on top of the other group. However, a pack of fierce rivals are still right behind the leading duo and eye the direct ticket to the quarter-finals reserved only for the group winners. A battle can also be expected in the lower halves of the rankings as all teams will certainly keep on fighting until the dying moments of the games in the last round for their chance to reach the Last 16.
