Soccer Player Sean Franklin Is Invited to U.S. Under-23 National Washington Post USA Training Camp Roster(s) I'm not really back. Not until Wednesday. But couldn't resist sharing the USA national team training camp roster for this month's workouts and Jan. 19 friendly against Sweden at Home Depot Center. As astute followers of the team, you know only MLS players and a handful of very northern European pros on break were available, right? In addition, Peter Nowak has called in 24 players for a U-23 camp at Bradenton (several Euro-based players were made available by their respective clubs). Discuss. See you in a few days. Jan. 2, 2008 Two Boston College junior soccer players -- midfielder Alejandro Bedoya and goalkeeper Chris Brown -- are among 24 players (15 professionals and nine collegians) invited to a two-week U.S. Under-23 National Team training camp from Jan. 6-20 in Bradenton, Fla., USA Soccer and head coach Peter Nowak has announced. Former BC star Charlie Davies, now playing for Hammarby IF (Sweden) of professional soccer, has also been selected to participate in the camp. The camp is part of the team's preparation for the final round of the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Championship held from March 11-23, 2008 in Los Angeles, Tampa and Nashville. The eight-team tournament will send its two finalists to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. "With Olympic qualifying only two months away, this camp gives us a great opportunity to continue the work we began last month in China," Nowak said in a press release. "There is a tremendous amount of competition for spots on the roster, and we will continue to evaluate players as we focus on developing a team that can qualify for the Olympic Games." There are a total of nine collegians on the roster with Boston College (Bedoya and Brown) and Wake Forest (Pat Phelan and Julien Valentin) both sending two players. Eric Avila (UC Santa Barbara), Billy Chiles (Towson), Sean Franklin (Cal State Northridge), Stephen King (Maryland) and UCLA's Chance Myers comprise the collegiate contingent. Following two weeks of training, the Under-23s will reconvene for a week-long camp before gathering in March for the Olympic Qualifying tournament. The U.S. plays Cuba on March 11, Panama on March 13 and Guatemala on March 15. After group play, the top two teams will advance to the semifinals which will be played on March 20 in Nashville, Tenn.
