Riemannian symmetric spaces are fundamental objects in finite dimensional differential geometry. An important problem is the construction of symmetric spaces for generalizations of simple Lie groups, especially their closest infinite dimensional analogues, known as affine Kac-Moody groups. We solve this problem and construct affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces in a series of several papers. This paper focuses on the algebraic side; more precisely, we introduce OSAKAs, the algebraic structures used to describe the connection between affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces and affine Kac-Moody algebras and describe their classification. 1. Introduction Riemannian symmetric spaces are fundamental objects in finite dimensional dif- ferential geometry displaying numerous connections with Lie theory, physics, and analysis. The search for infinite dimensional symmetric spaces associated to affine Kac-Moody algebras has been an open question for 20 years, since it was first asked by C.-L. Terng in [Ter95]. We present a complete solution to this problem in a series of several papers, dealing successively with the functional analytic, the algebraic and the geometric aspects. In this paper, building on work of E. Heintze and C. Groß in [HG12], we introduce and classify orthogonal symmetric affine Kac- Moody algebras (OSAKAs). OSAKAs are the central objects in the classification of affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces as they provide the crucial link between the geometric and the algebraic side of the theory.

Black MPI for Intelligent Systems Brown University MPI for Intelligent Systems Tubingen,¨ Germany Providence, US Tubingen,¨ Germany [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Multi-metric learning techniques learn local metric tensors in different parts of a feature space. With such an approach, even simple classifiers can be competitive with the state-of-the-art because the distance measure locally adapts to the struc- ture of the data. The learned distance measure is, however, non-metric, which has prevented multi-metric learning from generalizing to tasks such as dimensional- ity reduction and regression in a principled way. We prove that, with appropriate changes, multi-metric learning corresponds to learning the structure of a Rieman- nian manifold. We then show that this structure gives us a principled way to perform dimensionality reduction and regression according to the learned metrics. Algorithmically, we provide the first practical algorithm for computing geodesics according to the learned metrics, as well as algorithms for computing exponential and logarithmic maps on the Riemannian manifold. Together, these tools let many Euclidean algorithms take advantage of multi-metric learning. We illustrate the approach on regression and dimensionality reduction tasks that involve predicting measurements of the human body from shape data. 1 Learning and Computing Distances Statistics relies on measuring distances. When the Euclidean metric is insufficient, as is the case in many real problems, standard methods break down. This is a key motivation behind metric learning, which strives to learn good distance measures from data.

Introduction One of the intriguing properties of supergravity theories is the presence of Abelian Chern-Simons terms and their duals, the modified Bianchi identities, in the dynamics of the gauge fields. Such cases have the unusual feature that the equations of motion for the gauge field are non-linear in the gauge fields even though the associated gauge groups are Abelian. 												  Hodge DecompositionHodge Decomposition Daniel Lowengrub April 27, 2014 1 Introduction All of the content in these notes in contained in the book Differential Analysis on Complex Man- ifolds by Raymond Wells. The primary objective here is to highlight the steps needed to prove the Hodge decomposition theorems for real and complex manifolds, in addition to providing intuition as to how everything fits together. 1.1 The Decomposition Theorem On a given complex manifold X, there are two natural cohomologies to consider. One is the de Rham Cohomology which can be defined on a general, possibly non complex, manifold. The second one is the Dolbeault cohomology which uses the complex structure. We’ll quickly go over the definitions of these cohomologies in order to set notation but for a precise discussion I recommend Huybrechts or Wells. Roughly speaking, it is a correspondence between q-deformed conformal blocks of the quantum affine algebra and the deformed W-algebra. In this mini-course, I will define these objects and discuss some results in quantum K-theory of the Nakajima quiver varieties which is the key ingredient in the proof of the correspondence (in the simply-laced case). Spectral Data For L^2 Cohomology Abstract We study the spectral data for the higher direct images of a parabolic Higgs bundle along a map between a surface and a curve with both vertical and horizontal parabolic divisors. We describe the cohomology of a parabolic Higgs bundle on a curve in terms of its spectral data. We also calculate the integral kernel that reproduces the spectral data for the higher direct images of a parabolic Higgs bundle on the surface. This research is inspired by and extends the works of Simpson [21] and Donagi-Pantev-Simpson [7]. 												  Complex Cobordism and Almost Complex Fillings of Contact ManifoldsMSci Project in Mathematics COMPLEX COBORDISM AND ALMOST COMPLEX FILLINGS OF CONTACT MANIFOLDS November 2, 2016 Naomi L. Kraushar supervised by Dr C Wendl University College London Abstract An important problem in contact and symplectic topology is the question of which contact manifolds are symplectically fillable, in other words, which contact manifolds are the boundaries of symplectic manifolds, such that the symplectic structure is consistent, in some sense, with the given contact struc- ture on the boundary. The homotopy data on the tangent bundles involved in this question is finding an almost complex filling of almost contact manifolds. It is known that such fillings exist, so that there are no obstructions on the tangent bundles to the existence of symplectic fillings of contact manifolds; however, so far a formal proof of this fact has not been written down. In this paper, we prove this statement. We use cobordism theory to deal with the stable part of the homotopy obstruction, and then use obstruction theory, and a variant on surgery theory known as contact surgery, to deal with the unstable part of the obstruction.
