  • CAST BIOGRAPHIES Season 2 RICKY WHITTLE
CAST BIOGRAPHIES Season 2 RICKY WHITTLE (SHADOW MOON) Ricky Whittle was born in Oldham, near Manchester in the north of England. Growing up, Whittle excelled in various sports representing his country at youth level in football, rugby, American football and athletics. After being scouted by both Arsenal and Celtic Football Clubs, injuries forced him to pursue a law degree at Southampton University. It was here he began modeling, becoming the face of a Reebok campaign in 2000. Whittle left university to pursue an acting career and soon joined several action-packed seasons as bad boy Ryan Naysmith in Sky One’s “Dream Team.” Following that, Whittle quickly joined the U.K.’s hugely popular long-running drama, “Hollyoaks,” in which he played rookie cop Calvin Valentine to acclaim across 400+ episodes. In 2010, Whittle made the decision to relocate to California and, within months of settling in, booked the role of Captain George East in the romantic-comedy feature Austenland for Sony Pictures, which was produced by Twilight creator Stephanie Meyer. Additionally, he was soon cast in a major recurring role in VH1’s popular series, “Single Ladies.” Another major recurring role followed on The CW’s popular post-apocalyptic sci-fi series “The 100.” Whittle’s character, Lincoln, immediately became a fan-favorite character, so he was upped to a series regular. Simultaneously, Whittle also had a recurring arc as Daniel Zamora in ABC’s “Mistresses.” In 2016, after a vigorous casting process, Whittle won the coveted role of Shadow Moon in Starz’s “American Gods.” In 2017, Whittle was seen opposite Sanaa Lathan in the Netflix feature film Nappily Ever After, which is based on the novel of the same name by Trisha R.

We’ll have a gay ol’ time: transgressive sexuality and sexual taboo in adult television animation By Adam de Beer Thesis Presented for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in Film Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and the Centre for Film and Media Studies UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN UniversityFebruary of 2014Cape Town Supervisor: Associate Professor Martin P. Botha The copyright of this thesis vests in the author. No quotation from it or information derived from it is to be published without full acknowledgement of the source. The thesis is to be used for private study or non- commercial research purposes only. Published by the University of Cape Town (UCT) in terms of the non-exclusive license granted to UCT by the author. University of Cape Town Declaration I declare that this thesis is my own unaided work. It is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Cape Town. It has not been submitted before for any other degree or examination at any other university. Adam de Beer February 2014 ii Abstract This thesis develops an understanding of animation as transgression based on the work of Christopher Jenks. The research focuses on adult animation, specifically North American primetime television series, as manifestations of a social need to violate and thereby interrogate aspects of contemporary hetero-normative conformity in terms of identity and representation. A thematic analysis of four animated television series, namely Family Guy, Queer Duck, Drawn Together, and Rick & Steve, focuses on the texts themselves and various metatexts that surround these series. The analysis focuses specifically on expressions and manifestations of gay sexuality and sexual taboos and how these are articulated within the animated diegesis.

  • Mister Roger's Neighborhood Goes Upscale
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD GOES UPSCALE: REDEVELOPMENT AS NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANSING A Study of Courtyard Housing in the Pittsburgh Neighborhood of Squirrel Hill and Gentrification- Induced Displacement Ruth O. Bergman, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Dissertation directed by: Professor Mary Corbin Sies Department of American Studies University of Maryland Despite an abundance of literature on gentrification that has been published over the past several decades, little attention has been focused on the fate of displacees once they have migrated away from their neighborhoods of origin. This study covers new ground by tracking displacees to their new sites of habitation and applying ethnographic methodologies to collect displacement narratives spanning a decade— from forced relocation to resettlement and beyond. I argue that, notwithstanding the “trauma” of eviction, outmovers were able to tap into their own personal as well as their collective sense of place-identity in order to better negotiate the relocation process, proving to be far more resilient than might otherwise have been anticipated. Furthermore I suggest that the informants, all former residents of a cluster of courtyard enclaves in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Squirrel Hill, were empowered in their displacement journeys by the everyday practices of collaborative living that they experienced as participants in a highly articulated socio-spatial system that I have called “court-ordered living.” Finally, this dissertation argues that the discourses surrounding gentrification-induced displacement be reflected upon from the vantage point of hindsight, providing new insights into the intersection of historic preservation, property rights, neoliberal governance, affordable housing, and what constitutes “a beautiful neighborhood” from the perspective of competing stakeholders across time and place.
