    This page intentionally left blank ii ii The Splintering of Spain This book explores the ideas and culture surrounding the cataclysmic civil war that engulfed Spain from 1936 to 1939. It features specially commissioned articles from leading historians in Spain, Britain and the USA which examine the complex interaction of national and local factors, contributing to the shape and course of the war. They argue that the ‘splintering of Spain’ resulted from the myriad cultural clea- vages of society in the 1930s. Thus, this book views the civil war less as a single great conflict between two easily identifiable sets of ideas, social classes or ways of life, than historians have previously done. The Spanish tragedy, at the level of everyday life, was shaped by many tensions, both those that were formally political and those that were to do with people’s perceptions and understanding of the society around them.     Berta ai piedi grandi : Historical Figure and Literary Symbol1 Leslie Z. Morgan Loyola College Berta ai piedi grandi is one of the few chansons de geste with a female in the title—five out of the 86-100 normally listed in chanson de geste repertoires. She also shares a title; of the six chansons de geste listed with two characters as a title, Berta e Milone is one.2 In St. Mark’s Ms. Fr. 13 (henceforth, Geste Francor), a manuscript compilation probably dating to the first half of the fourteenth century, Berta occupies 1753 lines of verse (out of 17,067 total), about 10%; together with Berta e Milone, where the younger Berta is a major character, a female figure dominates 13% of the manuscript text. A female figure this conspicuous has, as might be expected, drawn critical attention.3 Critics reading Berta have worked primarily with Adenet le Roi’s late thirteenth-century Old French version, Berte aus grans piés. They have concentrated on two issues: 1) the historicity of the figure (where she came from, who she really is) and 2) her literary relationship with Charlemagne. In comparing various versions of the Berta story (which exist in French, Latin, Spanish and German as well as Italian), different solutions to the two issues have been proposed, but without a conclusive result. Recently, Krauss’s volume (translated into Italian in 1980) has suggested a third issue: the socio-cultural meaning of differences between the Geste Francor Berta poem and the Old French version. Several historical studies provide useful background to the literary texts of Berta .

When Two Become One: Sacramental Woes And Theological Anxiety In Medieval Representations Of Marriage Abstract This dissertation traces the long, winding, and problematic road along which marriage became a sacrament of the Church. In so doing, it identifies several key problems with marriage’s ability to fulfill the sacramental criteria laid out in Peter Lombard’s Sentences: that a sacrament must signify a specific form of divine grace, and that it must directly bring about the grace that it signifies. While, on the basis of Ephesians 5, theologians had no problem identifying the symbolic power of marriage with the spiritual union of Christ and the Church, they never fully succeeded in locating a form of effective grace, placing immense stress upon marriage’s status as a signifier. As a result, theologians and canonists found themselves unable to deal with several social aspects of marriage that threatened this symbolic capacity, namely concubinage and the remarriage of widows and widowers.

A Study of Thomas Hardy’s Presentation of the Theme of Marriage in Jude the Obscure Essay in English Oraka Danho School of Education, Culture Supervisor: Steven Hartman and Communication Mälardalen University Autumn 2018 Abstract Thomas Hardy was a sensitive writer who loved free, independent and strong-minded women. His last novel shows that Hardy was totally aware of the changing world at the end of the Victorian age and the difficulties women faced at that time in their evolution from the submissive role of wives to that of new women and female suffragettes who defy Victorian expectations in their struggle for equality and recognition (Sandlin 10). Hardy was ahead of his time in his anticipation of the new woman and her future role in marriage and society. Through his novel Jude the Obscure, Hardy offers his women a voice, which reflects their changing role in society and in the world. His heroine, Sue, articulates women’s difficulties in asserting their individuality in modern times by her refusal of marriage and declaration of love instead. Hardy’s novel not only undermines the authority of the social institution called marriage, but his characters initiate and end marriages as they continuously change their personal views on marriage in order to show that love can even exist outside wedlock. VOLUME 14 NUMBER 2 2006 The history of marriage and the myth of Friedelehe RUTH MAZO KARRAS The idea that Friedelehe and Muntehe constituted two distinct forms of Germanic marriage was based upon an attempt to reconstruct common Germanic culture with scraps of evidence from widely different times and places. A thorough re-examination of the sources for the institutions that were posited, based on this now outmoded methodology, reveals no evidence that transfer of Munt, or guardianship, distinguished between two different types of marriage, except perhaps in Lombard Italy, under the influence of Roman law. The idea that marriage with a dos is a different institution from marriage without one is not attested until the Carolingian period. Although it is possible to trace a trajectory of developments in the social, institutional, and intellectual histories of marriage from at least the eleventh century to the present, the project of writing a history of marriage much before this period is not so straightforward.

I argue that traditional institutions that favored social stability were incompatible with a modern understanding of individual rights. My argument is centered on three issues: the abolition ofthe dowry, the legalization ofdivorce and the legitimization offree union. Conservatives considered familial stability to be a vital element ofnational security, thereby justifying extensive state interference in marriage practices. She was the New Woman. Stereotypes of this middle-class figure, who also worked for wages and wore mannish rational dress, materialized in Punch magazine’s vicious caricatures of the masculine “girl graduate,” “lady journalist,” and “telegraph girl” (Sutherland 3-7; Marks 174-178).
