As the comments caused waves in Israel, Netanyahu again spoke of the issue at the start of a cabinet meeting. He called Israel a “Jewish, democratic state” with equal rights, but “the nation state not of all its citizens but only of the Jewish people”. Netanyahu has been accused of demonising Israeli Arabs, who make up about 17% of the population, in an attempt to boost rightwing turnout in elections due on 9 April. He has continually warned that his opponents will receive the support of Arab parties and that they will make significant concessions to the Palestinians. Benny Gantz: can this Israeli general defeat Benjamin Netanyahu? Read more Netanyahu, under threat of indictment for corruption, is facing a tough challenge from a centrist political alliance led by Benny Gantz, a former military chief of staff, and Yair Lapid, an ex-finance minister. The alliance’s centrist positions and its security credentials – it includes three former military chiefs of staff – have helped it beat back Netanyahu’s claims that its leaders are “weak” leftists. Arab parties would be extremely unlikely to be part of any coalition government after elections. Arab Israelis are Palestinians who remained on their land after the 1948 creation of Israel and are largely supportive of the Palestinian cause. Netanyahu leads what is seen as the most rightwing government in Israel’s history and says he wants a similar coalition after the upcoming polls. .זה הבית שלי לא פחות משלך, אני לא פחות ממך ואתה לא פחות ממני (דרך נושאי הדגל, אדריאן אוטילס) Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is ‘not a state of all its citizens’ PM has been accused of demonising Israeli Arabs in lead-up to April election Agence France-Presse in Jerusalem Sun 10 Mar 2019 10.01 EDTLast modified on Sun 10 Mar 2019 15.35 EDT Shares 10,678 Benjamin Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting Israel was the ‘nation state only of the Jewish people’. Love your neighbor as yourself It isn’t a matter of left or right. Jewish Arab. Secular Orthodox. It is a matter of dialogue. Of communication for peace and equality and patience for one another. The responsibility to plant hopes and light for a better future for our kids is on us. Rotem, my sister, you inspire us all. Gal Gadot B.Netanyahu: Dear Rotem, an important correction: Israel is not the state of all of it's citizens. According to the new national law we have passed, Israel is the state of the Jewish people - and them alone. As you wrote, there is nothing wrong with the Israeli Arabs - they share the same right like us all. The Government of the Likud has invested in the Arab sector more than any other government. The Likud just wants to clear the question - is it going to be a strong right wing government led by me, or a left wing government led by Lapid, Gantz and the Arab parties. Lapid and Gantz have no other way to form a government that would not risk the state and citizens of Israel. One more month to vote. Good day. IAmTheShaddow: Dear Rotem Sela, I have seen what you posted on your story and I feel I must correct you, about some things you may not understand or you don't want to realize… First of all Israel is the state of the JEWISH PEOPLE ALONE!!! A state that was established so the prosecuted and murdered Jewish people will finally have a home.

  • Israel and Overseas: Israeli Election Primer 2015 (As Of, January 27, 2015) Elections • in Israel, Elections for the Knesset A
Israel and Overseas: Israeli Election Primer 2015 (As of, January 27, 2015) Elections In Israel, elections for the Knesset are held at least every four years. As is frequently the case, the outgoing government coalition collapsed due to disagreements between the parties. As a result, the Knesset fell significantly short of seeing out its full four year term. Knesset elections in Israel will now be held on March 17, 2015, slightly over two years since the last time that this occurred. The Basics of the Israeli Electoral System All Israeli citizens above the age of 18 and currently in the country are eligible to vote. Voters simply select one political party. Votes are tallied and each party is then basically awarded the same percentage of Knesset seats as the percentage of votes that it received. So a party that wins 10% of total votes, receives 10% of the seats in the Knesset (In other words, they would win 12, out of a total of 120 seats). To discourage small parties, the law was recently amended and now the votes of any party that does not win at least 3.25% of the total (probably around 130,000 votes) are completely discarded and that party will not receive any seats. (Until recently, the “electoral threshold,” as it is known, was only 2%). For the upcoming elections, by January 29, each party must submit a numbered list of its candidates, which cannot later be altered. So a party that receives 10 seats will send to the Knesset the top 10 people listed on its pre-submitted list.

  • Yossi Beilin, There's No Such Thing As a Jewish State
Haaretz.Com http://www.haaretz.com/misc/article-print-page/.premium-yossi-beilin-th... Yossi Beilin, there’s no such thing as a Jewish state Avraham Burg | Mar. 15, 2020 | 11:30 AM | 5 Yossi Beilin is almost everything to me – teacher and partner, beloved friend and challenging opponent. His last article in Israel Hayom outlines the core of the argument between us – the watershed between the broad Zionist camp and what is yet to be the new Israeli left. He blasts Joint List leader Ayman Odeh’s position that a Jewish majority is a racist term, stating that “if a Jewish majority is a racist term, then a Jewish state is also a racist term, and Zionism is racism as well.” Is that what this rational, pragmatic man thinks? I don’t know what Odeh thinks, but I, as one of tens of thousands of people who voted for the Joint List, say to Beilin explicitly – yes. What for you is a rhetorical question for me is a painful, penetrating reply – Zionism in Israel today means only one thing: racism! And here it is: There’s no such thing as a Jewish state. Have you ever seen the sticker that reads: “A Sabbath observing taxi”? Did you smile? Rightly so. What, does the taxi set aside a portion of dough before baking a challah? Does it go to the mikveh, light candles? Of course not. The taxi is only a tool. It does not operate on Saturday because the driver observes the Sabbath. Like it, the state is just a tool in the public’s hands.

INTERNATIONAL POLICY ANALYSIS Ten Years with Netanyahu Maintaining Israel, the Conflict – and Himself DAHLIA SCHEINDLIN January 2017 n Benjamin Netanyahu’s political success has been paved by the Israeli public’s per- ception of imminent existential destruction. Did his dichotomic worldview and his »fortress Israel« mentality create or merely leverage the public’s fears? n In the name of existential security, Netanyahu has justified the deterioration in the Palestinian-Israel conflict, which masquerades as stagnation. His fixation on Iran during two of his recent three terms as Prime Minister has distracted from a lack of policy on the local conflict. n Netanyahu has implemented a clear course of free market economics, which has generated some respectable macroeconomic indicators, but at the expense of mas- sive socio-economic gaps. n Since his re-election in 2015, Netanyahu has concentrated power and portfolios in his hands and has perpetuated earlier efforts to erode Israel’s civil society. He has targeted the press, his ideological opponents in the NGO sector, and Israel’s Arab-Palestinian minority. n In order to temper growing nationalism and democratic erosion, Israel should take genuine steps towards conflict resolution, place checks on unfettered free market principles, and end the aggression against independent civil society, opposition groups, and minorities. • 2019 Pre-Elections Brief No. 2
Inter-Agency Task Force on Israeli Arab Issues 2019 Pre-Elections Brief No. 2 Elections Discourse on Arab Political Participation April 5, 2019 The legitimacy of Arab participation in Israeli politics has emerged as a wedge issue in this election cycle, reflected in public discourse and surveys, decisions of the Central Election Committee and Supreme Court, and in campaign slogans and statements. Early on, the potential for political partnership between Arab and Jewish parties was effectively framed as a left/right-wing choice, with most mainstream Jewish-led lists choosing to express an explicit commitment to resist or even block such partnership. Anti-Arab sentiment has been part of previous national election campaigns, including Benjamin Netanyahu's slogan in 1999 that he was "good for the Jews;" Yisrael Beitenu Chair Avigdor Lieberman's slogan in 2009, "No Citizenship Without Loyalty;" and, most famously, Netanyahu's 2015 election-day statement that "the Arabs are flocking to the polls" in a last- minute effort to spur his supporters to vote. However, analysts and activists claim that this time around it appeared much earlier in the process, much more vocally and with more explicit backing of mainstream leaders and parties. Along with overt campaigning along Jewish/Arab lines, this issue is seen as woven through a number of aspects of this elections cycle, including PM Netanyahu and the Likud Party's support for the pairing of Otzma Yehudit, the extreme right-wing openly anti-Arab party, with Habayit Hayehudi; extreme and violent political ads broadcast on television; and Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Facebook statement that “Israel is not a country of all its citizens” according to the Nation-State Law in response to media personality Rotem Sela.

  • G. Gorenberg on Israeli Independence and Right-Wing Insecurity
    G. Gorenberg on Israeli independence and right-wing insecurity In a Haaretz op-ed, Gershom Gorenberg observes that “You can take the Jews out of exile, but you can’t take the exile out of the Israeli right.” This is an abridged version: I’m sitting in a cafe in Jerusalem almost on the eve of Independence Day, listening to the Ashkenazi and the Ethiopian waiters joking in Hebrew, in circumstances that existentially are a billion miles from anywhere that my great-grandfather in the Ukraine could have imagined a descendant living, and I’m thinking about the speeches that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will give over the next couple of days – and thinking that he actually does not get that we are independent. Not that I mean to pick on Netanyahu, except as a personification of the Israeli right, which for all that it sees itself as strutting in Jabotinskian pride and glory, does not understand what it means to be here – physically, culturally or morally. Listening to the panicky spokespeople of the right, you’d never know that we have the strongest army in the Middle East, that we enjoy the back of the world’s only superpower, that Europe has not abandoned us but rather buys our products and sells us arms, that we are safe enough to stop being afraid of the dark. This is not the messianic age or even the first-flowering of redemption; if it were, we wouldn’t need any of those things. … But we do live at the existential far pole from my great-grandfather’s village.
