Foreword ood dog!” That’s the first vivid memory I have of Jack Daniels. I “Gheard that over the telephone after a 3K time trial Jared Scott and I ran in Flagstaff, AZ, in the fall of 2007. I moved to Flagstaff in the fall of 2007, knowing that I had specific running goals in mind and I wanted to maximize my chances of reaching them. For me, the most important ingredient for success was Jack Daniels, so I began one of the greatest relationships of my life. Over the next few years, I came to know Jack quite well as he coached me to the Olympic Trials 5K in 2008. It is clear that Jack is the greatest mind in running. His experience in exer- cise physiology and its application to running is unparalleled. His running philosophy was known to me in college. I actually first saw Jack in 2002 at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships. (He was seated in the Cortland section, with a Donald Duck hat on.) At SUNY Geneseo we competed against SUNY Cortland with frequency. Dr. Daniels was well known to us as his athletes were omnipresent on the awards podium, regardless of the meet. Several years later, I sought him out, and as we worked closely together, we became good friends. My fondest memories from my time training in Flagstaff are of the stories he would tell as he was riding his bicycle beside me while I was on a recovery jog between quality workouts. The story about a beaver squeezing in under the door of his cabin one Montana winter to warm itself is my favorite. As I trained under his tutelage, I realized the elegance of his philosophy. Proper training requires specific intensities for specific distances. Overtrain- ing is not to be sought as the pinnacle of a running career; rather it should be scoffed at. The essence of his philosophy is that anyone can benefit from its application, since it allows flexibility based on mileage, pace, and other variables. It is because of Jack Daniels that I had the success I did, and I will be forever grateful. Without further delay, please enjoy reading this third edition of the defini- tive training tome for so many athletes. Even now, years after the first edition, Jack provides new, scientifically-based information with your success in mind. Preface have learned a great deal about running and runners since the second edi- I tion of Daniels’ Running Formula. It might seem strange to some of you that after so many years of study and coaching, I still find new, more practi- cal, and often simpler ways of prescribing training and racing programs, but it’s true. Some of these new ideas and strategies that can be found in this third edition of my book include the following: • Finding success through different approaches and amounts of running • Logging the stress of different types of training, which provides a way of keeping track of total stress, rather than just mileage for each season and each type of training • Thinking of rest as part of training, as opposed to resting in order to avoid training • Being able to compare runners of different ages based on adjusted VDOT values • Using a wide variety of marathon training programs for beginners through the elite The many runners and coaches who so often contact me to say they used my training ideas with considerable success have encouraged me to continue looking for new ideas or simpler ways of improving fitness and performance. In this edition, I have included a list of what I refer to as the basic laws of running; these can be used by individual runners to better prepare for races and by coaches to help their runners perform better. It has been an interesting journey working with and researching elite (and some not-so-elite) runners over the years. Although we tend to go through phases of what is considered the best approach to improved performance, it all really boils down to following some principles, trying to adjust training to meet individual needs, and prescribing training that is productive yet mini- mizes the chances of injury. I have always tried to emphasize the importance of consistency in training and to produce the greatest benefit from the least amount of training stress, rather than the greatest benefit from the greatest amount of stress. No one has all the answers for how best to train, and there is no single system that works best for everyone. My aim is to present scientific infor- mation in a manner that coaches and athletes can understand, appreciate, and use. Then you can decide whether the knowledge and the training and racing programs provided in the pages that follow have a positive impact on you, the runner or running coach. ix x Preface The chapters are sequenced to build on the previous content.

So far, investigators have widely attempted to individuate the factors affecting RE in competitive athletes, focusing mainly on the relationships between RE and running biomechanics. However, the current results are inconsistent and a clear mechanical profile of an economic runner has not been yet established. The present work aimed to better understand how the running technique influences RE in sub-elite middle-distance runners by investigating the biomechanical parameters acting on RE and the underlying mechanisms. Special emphasis was given to accounting for intra-individual variability in RE at different speeds and to assessing track running rather than treadmill running. In Study One, a factor analysis was used to reduce the 30 considered mechanical parameters to few global descriptors of the running mechanics. Then, a biomechanical comparison between economic and non economic runners and a multiple regression analysis (with RE as criterion variable and mechanical indices as independent variables) were performed. It was found that a better RE was associated to higher knee and ankle flexion in the support phase, and that the combination of seven individuated mechanical measures explains ∼72% of the variability in RE.

In this study, we show that running economy needs to be taken into account when deriving metabolic cost from accelerometer data. We administered an experiment in which 32 experienced participants (age = 28 ± 7 years, weekly running distance = 51 ± 24 km) ran at a constant speed with modified spatiotemporal gait characteristics (stride length, ground contact time, use of arms). We recorded both their metabolic costs of transportation, as well as running power, as measured by a Stryd sensor. Purposely varying the running style impacts the running economy and leads to significant differences in the metabolic cost of running (p < 0.01). At the same time, the expected rise in running power does not follow this change, and there is a significant difference in the relation between metabolic cost and power (p < 0.001). These results stand in contrast to the previously reported link between metabolic and mechanical running characteristics estimated by foot-worn sensors.

    1 Training Distance Runners Jack Daniels Some Basic Laws of Coaching Every coach must follow some basic guidelines when dealing with others. • Treat each runner as an individual who has unique strengths and weaknesses. *Time available is not the same for all *Time of day is not the same for all *Background varies a great deal among individuals *Age, health, body composition and fitness can vary considerably • Always find positive comments that you can give regarding how training is going • Everyone has good and bad days of training • Subject your runners to a variety of types of training so they know what feels best • Encourage being flexible in regard to changing workouts, days of training, etc. • Support the idea of not training when ill or injured – care for health concerns • When your runners run together, make sure they run together – no “lead dogs” • Try to eliminate the feeling of inferiority to others who are doing more training • Teach your runners how to breathe properly • Teach your runners how to use an economical running stride • Use intermediate goals that pave the way for long-term success • Expose your runners to a variety of flexibility and warm-up activities • Encourage good eating and sleep habits and teach proper hydration • Don’t worry about sleep on the pre-race night – it will avoid negative thoughts • Learn as much as possible about coming race conditions – course, weather, etc • Try to have your runners enter some low-key practice races to experience details • Have your runners experiment with shoes, socks, clothing,

Ten male runners completed 6 min steady state runs in minimalist, maximalist and energy return footwear. The mass of the footwear was controlled by adding lead tape to the lighter shoes. Running economy, shoe comfort, rating of perceived exertion and % contribution of carbohydrate to total calorie expenditure were assessed. Participants also subjectively indicated which shoe condition they preferred for running. Differences in shoe comfort and physiological parameters were examined using paired samples t-tests, whilst shoe preferences were tested using a chi-square test. The results showed firstly that running economy was significantly improved in the energy return (35.9 ml∙kg/min) compared to minimalist footwear (37.8 ml∙kg/min). In addition % carbohydrate was significantly greater in the minimalist (76.4%) in comparison to energy return footwear (72.9%).

Locomotory energy cost was determined in ninety-four healthy male and female endurance runners across a range of performance standards. Various anthropometric and body composition measurements were taken manually and via DXA scans. The relationships between anthropometry and running economy were assessed using independent Pearson’s correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression. Three parameters, normalised neck and calf perimeters and normalised whole body bone mass explained 30% of the variance in locomotory energy cost. Low locomotory energy cost was related solely to parameters indicating relative slenderness of the body. Trials were performed following 3 days of supplementation of NO 3 -rich BRJ − − 1 − − − 1 in natura (8.4 mmol NO3 day ) or BRJ NO3 -depleted placebo (0.01 mmol NO3 day ), with the last dose being ingested 2 h before each test. During the tests, maximum heart rate (HR max), maximal rating of perceived exertion (RPE max), pre- and post-test glucose concentrations (Glucpre, Glucpost), and peak blood lactate concentration were determined. − 1 − 1 Results VO2max was higher following BRJ vs PLA (46.6 ± 6.4 vs 45.1 ± 5.8 mL kg min ; P = 0.022), as well as vVO2max − 1 − 1 (14.5 ± 0.8 vs 13.9 ± 1.0 km h P = 0.024) and Vpeak (15.5 ± 1.1 vs 15.2 ± 1.2 km h P = 0.038), with no differences in the other variables.

    Barnes and Kilding Sports Medicine - Open (2015) 1:8 DOI 10.1186/s40798-015-0007-y REVIEW Open Access Running economy: measurement, norms, and determining factors Kyle R Barnes1,2* and Andrew E Kilding1 Abstract Running economy (RE) is considered an important physiological measure for endurance athletes, especially distance runners. This review considers 1) how RE is defined and measured and 2) physiological and biomechanical factors that determine or influence RE. It is difficult to accurately ascertain what is good, average, and poor RE between athletes and studies due to variation in protocols, gas-analysis systems, and data averaging techniques. However, representative RE values for different caliber of male and female runners can be identified from existing literature with mostly clear delineations in oxygen uptake across a range of speeds in moderately and highly trained and elite runners. Despite being simple to measure and acceptably reliable, it is evident that RE is a complex, multifactorial concept that reflects the integrated composite of a variety of metabolic, cardiorespiratory, biomechanical and neuromuscular characteristics that are unique to the individual. Metabolic efficiency refers to the utilization of available energy to facilitate optimal performance, whereas cardiopulmonary efficiency refers to a reduced work output for the processes related to oxygen transport and utilization. Biomechanical and neuromuscular characteristics refer to the interaction between the neural and musculoskeletal systems and their ability to convert power output into translocation and therefore performance. Of the numerous metabolic, cardiopulmonary, biomechanical and neuromuscular characteristics contributing to RE, many of these are able to adapt through training or other interventions resulting in improved RE.

The purpose of the study was to determine if running economy was influenced by wearing maximal cushioning shoes vs. control (neutral cushioning) shoes. Participants (n=10, age=28.2±6.1yrs; mass=68.1±10.2 kg; height=170±6.1 cm) completed two experiments. Each experiment included running conditions wearing control and maximal cushioning shoes. In Experiment 1, participants ran on a treadmill at three speeds in each shoe condition (6 total conditions). The speeds were: 1) preferred speed, 2) preferred speed + 0.447 m·s-1, and 3) preferred speed - 0.447 m·s-1. In Experiment 2, participants ran on a treadmill at two inclines (0%, 6%) in each shoe condition (4 total conditions) at preferred speed. Experiments were conducted on separate days with Experiment 1 first. For all conditions, participants ran for 8-10 minutes while rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) was recorded. Average VO2 during steady state for each running condition was calculated. For Experiment 1, a 2 (shoe) x 3 (speed) repeated measures ANOVA (α=0.05) was used. For Experiment 2, a 2 (shoe) x 2 (incline) repeated measures ANOVA (α=0.05) was used.
