SCHOOL OF ONE: REIMAGINING HOW STUDENTS LEARN Personalised Learning Conference INSTITUTE

Introduction

Personalised Learning, addressing the individual needs of every learner is by no means a new concept. Pedagogies such as Waldorf by Rudolf Steiner are concerned with the child’s temperament to inform teachers on how to address the learner. Montessori focuses on the child’s individual needs and potential in a carefully crafted environment and setting. Two examples of early 20th century pedagogies that focus on individual learners, pre-technology and EdTech.

The arrival of EdTech has propelled the personalisation discussion into new dimensions and especially talking to EdTech start-ups, widespread personalisation claims resonate loudly through the EdTech landscape. Aiming to address individual learners’ needs, the technology is often seen as the silver bullet that realises this challenge by enabling true adaptive learning paths.

Yet, the picture is perhaps not quite that simple and merits in- depth questioning. This conference, bringing together experts and delegates involved in education and its different kaleidoscopic facets, will delve into the multiple facets of Personalised Learning. We will explore how technology can enhance and facilitate the challenge, but equally discuss its implications, its defnition(s) or misappropriations. We will hear from experts that new ethics are needed, that we need to understand learning, that personalisation if not implemented well, may even stop the construction of learning, as the result of an adaptive determined learning path. We will hear how personalised learning may require new approaches in pedagogy or how personalisation is already implemented in the classroom.

Bringing together multiple stakeholders and experts, this conference aims to shine a focused light on personalised learning to reveal its depth, complexity and opportunity.
