Film Seasons, 2009 and 2010

In the first couple of years of the DWA project, we held two Film Seasons, showing a mixture of thought provoking films to appeal to a range of audiences.

Between October and December 2009 our films focussed on a series of topics relating to sustainable development and climate change issues. These were:

Thursday 8 October, An Inconvenient Truth (Academy award-winning 2006 documentary featuring former US Vice-President Al Gore. The film charts his crusade to alert the world to the threat posed by global warming and climate change).

Thursday 12 November, The 11th Hour (A look at the global environment and ways to save it, produced in 2007 by Leonardo DiCaprio).

Thursday 10 December, The Age of Stupid (A remarkable and vivid film, bringing to life recent major climate events and exploring were they may lead).

The following winter we showed:

Beyond the Pole UK (2009), Cert 15, 90 min Dir. David L. Williams; starring Stephen Mangan (of ) and Filmed partly on location in Greenland, this is 'a global- warming comedy that takes a satirical swipe at the earnest eco-documentary' (Sunday Times). Follow the misguided attempts of two best friends to organize the first carbon-neutral, organic, vegetarian expedition to the north pole. Contains some strong language. Thursday 7 October, 7.30 pm

The Power of Community USA (2006), 53 min. Dir. Faith Morgan. Subtitled 'How Cuba Survived Peak Oil', this documentary charts the transformation of the Cuban economy after the country's oil and gas imports were halved following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It shows how food production switched from large farms and plantations to small organic farms and urban gardens. Thursday 4 November, 7.30 pm

Wall-E USA (2008) Cert U, 98 min Dir. Andrew Stanton An animated sci-fi saga featuring a love story between two robots, set in the future when humans have abandoned a heavily polluted planet Earth. 'Another in the long line of Pixar classics – beautiful, energetic, intelligent, satirical, crammed full of gorgeous design, and genuinely heartwarming.' (Film 4) Truly a film for all ages. Thursday 2 December, 7.30 pm
