It is with a view of bringing our readers in contact with the mind and heart of that wonderful spiritual guide, that we present our first collection in English of his Spiritual Letters. In the present volume are letters he addressed to various women religious, to aspirants to the religious life, and to his three nieces who eventually became nuns. Left to himself. Father Libermann would probably never have undertaken the direction of souls. But in this as in every other action of his life, God's will was paramount. Once he recognized that God wished him to undertake this exacting work, he put into practice a constant theme of his letters, surrender to God's good pleasure, and then went ahead undaunted. He was convinced that the role of the spiritual director was one of removing the obstacles to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and time and again he warns those he directs against becoming in any way attached to himself, when his sole aim is to attach them to Jesus alone. A note of confidence in God and Our Blessed Lady, and encouragement in the face of obstacles, runs right through all his writings. For him fear and strain are unworthy of a friend of Jesus and Mary. Courage and perseverance in spite of repeated falls are standard recommendations. Once he wrote to Mother de Villeneuve of the Sisters of Castres "The majority of souls are lost through discouragement." One who seeks literary elegance in his letters of direction will fail to find it. In writing to souls whom he sought to draw to Jesus, he generally used French, which for him was an adopted language. He wrote under the strain of over- vn PREFACE whelming occupations, and often while suffering from severe attacks of migraine and other ailments. Many of these letters were literally dashed off in spare moments and always with the consciousness that he owed them to his correspondents. His sincerity, his deep love of Jesus and Mary, his consuming zeal for the sanctification of souls, and his unfailing encourage- ment to peace and calm trust in God, shine out in every line. His aim was to "influence people," not for economic gain but for the spiritual benefit of his neighbor. Although the letters in this collection are addressed to re- ligious or prospective religious, they also have a message for priests and layfolk. That message is one of fidelity to the Holy Spirit and absolute trust and confidence in the love of Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother. It is the fervent prayer of the translators that this message may bring lasting peace to many troubled souls. : I. LETTERS TO LOUISE (VOILLE) DES LOGES (SISTER AURELIA) Louise des Loges was one of five girls who heard God's call to the apostolate of the much neglected negroes. These ladies consulted Father Tisserant with regard to their voca- tion. Father Tisserant was temporarily engaged in work for the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Victories in Paris, and he had become one of Father Libermann's chief collabo- rators in his work for the Negro. Louise later entered the Institute of the Immaculate Conception of Castres, a Society dedicated to the service of the negroes in the mission field. She took the name of Sister Aurelia. How Father Liber- mann carefully guided her during her early years in the religious life is seen in the following letters that have been preserved for us. Letter One December 23, 1842 Vol. 3, p. 318^ Glory to Jesus and His Holy Cross I My dear Sister in Our Lord Jesus Christ I regret that I have been unable to reply to your letter be- fore this. I am so eager to give you consolation that the thought of this delay broke my heart. I trust that our good Master will forgive me, as it was physically impossible for me to write to you. Please do not, my good sister, allow this delay to worry you. I am sure that Mary, our very dear Mother, has com- pensated you for my silence. The fact that I have not written ^References are made to the fourteen volumes of Notes et Docu- ments relafifs a la vie ct I'oeuvre du Venerable Frangois-Marie-Paul Libermann, Paris, 1929-1956. 1 SPIRITUAL LETTERS OF FRANCIS LIBERMANN sooner should not prevent your writing to me whenever you think it necessary, or for that matter, whenever you wish to do so. I earnestly desire to help you in the task of attaining holi- ness, and to guide you in the way of the divine love of our most sweet Lord Jesus. From now on, therefore, write to me every month or even every fortnight, and also at any other time that you feel that it will benefit your soul. It is not necessary that you should pay the postage on your letters. He Who feeds even the smallest animals will provide what is necessary for those who desire to serve Him. After all, whether your money or mine is used for the postage, it is always Our Lord's money. Are the letters not written in the name of and for the love of that dear Master? So do not worry about the expense. You wish that I should, henceforth, consider you as my child. Yes, you may count on it that I shall have a truly fatherly affection for your soul, and that I shall interest my- self in it as a father interests himself in his child, and as a shepherd cares for the sheep entrusted to him. Open your soul with perfect freedom and peace. Join wholeheartedly in the great desire the Supreme Shepherd has for your sanctifi- cation. Have confidence in my words and guidance, because you can be sure that I fully adopt the Divine Master's plan for your sanctification. May He grant me the grace of His divine light.

To attempt a biography of Paul the Apostle is like trying to harness a hurricane. Paul was pneumatic, spirit-swept, animated by the breath of God Himself. He in turn moved like a mighty wind over the Greco-Roman world, shaking the pillars of an empire, sweep­ ing everything Christward, to become the veritable Godparent of Christianity. To crystalize in print so boundless a personality is to conquer the unconquerable. Perfect achievement is impossible. The best to be hoped for is a favorable issue with fractional success. Father Ricciotti has not done the impossible, but he has made a magnificent try. To those familiar with his Life of Christ this will be no surprise. As difficult a subject as St. Paul poses, it is child's play compared to a biography of the Son of God. Since his L-ife of Clzrisi is universally acknowledged as one of the finest portrayals of our Saviour ever to appear, it is only to be expected that the com­ paratively less challenging life of St. Paul would be another trium­ phant masterstroke. It is, without question. With a talent unique among authors who utilize biblical themes, Father Ricciotti imparts to his work an orientation neither exegetical, nor literary, nor devotional, nor theological. Fundamentally, he is a classicist who works with Scriptural subject matter. The quality peculiar to his writing is the authentic reproduction of the Imperial Roman atmosphere of the first century, the world in which the fire of Christianity was first ignited.

By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. 1 Peter 2:21– 25 (ESV) “Keep trusting the One who keeps you trusting” If you have been around College Park for the last few years, you have probably heard me use this mantra in a number of different sermons. It is a helpful statement for me, which has been a helpful rallying-cry for my soul when I’m feeling the weight and pressure of life. It did not originate with me. In 2004, and as we were grieving the loss of our daughter, that statement was how John Piper concluded a condolence email that he wrote to us after a family member sent him an email about what we were walking through. That statement was meaningful because it distills in eight words the mindset that believers are to have as they walk through suffering.

    MODERN SPIRITUALITY By M. C. D'ARCY Ew, whose memories can go back to the nineteenth century, would deny that a change in the form of ascetic and spiritual direction has taken place within their own lifetime. This F change has been attributed by some to the Decree of St. Pins X on Frequent Communion. The effects of frequent and daily communion have been remarkable even to human sight, but the Decree was more a signal than a cause, an encouragement to already existing desires. Long before i9o 5 writers like Scheeben or the Ven. Francis Libermann, for example, were teaching what would be considered characteristic of the present spirit of the Church. One contributing cause has been suggested, namely, the dying down of the long dispute on the nature of actual grace. There is some truth here because the seminaries and religious houses of theology teach the priests, whose sermons and direction are the word of God for the faithful. Now the controversy on actual grace took up so much of the time meant to be given to grace in class, that the nature of sanctifying grace and the supernatural life was hurried through. In 1900 a student had learnt hardly anything of this supernatural life. His first sermon as a priest would be invariably on loving God. By contrast the first sermon now will be usually on sanctifying grace or the mystical body. For distant causes we have to go back to the post-Reformation policy of the Church. That was determined by the successes of heretics and the general laxity of the clergy and the people.

The first letter from the Roman Congregation for Religious, addressed to all those living the Consecrated Life, which has for its theme “Rejoice”1 draws to a great extent on the words of Pope Francis in his Apostolic Exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel”. In that document, the Pope invites us to go back to the source of our own vocation, namely, our encounter with Jesus Christ. This Novena invites us to go back to the source of Libermann’s vocation: the outpouring of the Spirit of Truth at his conversion, and of the Spirit of Love at his Baptism. If we wish to understand the teaching of Libermann on consecration and docility to the Holy Spirit, we must first of all try to know his spiritual experience as a beginner in the Faith. This is what we propose to examine during this (first) Novena. In this Novena, “Libermann: his Experience of the Holy Spirit”, we are invited to live the same return to the sources of our own Spiritan missionary vocation. The present Novena is a re-reading of the life of Libermann, especially of the first part of his life up to the foundation of the Society of the Holy Heart of Mary.

    ! SPIRITUAL LETTERS OF FRANCIS LIBERMANN 2. LETTERS TO EUGENE DUPONT Eugene Dupont, a student at the Sulpician Seminary of Issy, felt attracted to apostolic work in the missions. Follow- ing the advice of his spiritual director, Father Pinault, a friend and admirer of Libermann, he wrote to the latter, who was then in Rome to prepare the foundation of the Con- gregation of the Holy Heart of Mary. There followed a correspondence between the two men which extended over a period of two years. Sixteen letters of Libermann have been preserved. One of these contains his sublime commentary on the inspiring prayer, O J'esus, living in Mary, come and live in your servants. Eugene Dupont had aspired to go to Haiti as a member of Libermann's Congregation, but his wishes were not fulfilled. He eventually became a priest of the Archdiocese of Rouen, but his spiritual union with Father Libermann was never destroyed. What is implied by surrender to God's love.
